The Baruch library is filled with an enormous variety of books, computers and faculty members that are sure to help you with whatever you need for school. The first floor was interesting. It consisted of dozens of computers in which Baruch students use to complete papers and essays for class. The second floor consisted of hundreds and hundreds of books. These books are filled with so much different information that is sure to help any student out. The check out process is pretty neat too since it is internet based. Students go online and search for a certain topic on what they are researching and the computer gives them a variety of books of which they can use for their papers. The cool part is that all the CUNY libraries are connected so if you cannot find a book you need in the Baruch Library, there are 18 other options to go to to get whatever you need. The library is very convenient for anyone’s college needs.
Your Life, Your Money
My favorite of all the workshops. This workshop really put money into perspective for me. It was a workshop pretty late in the evening, and it ended at 8 P.M. It was wonderful though. We watched a video and had a discussion. The video spoke of credit card debt and how it can be fatal. It discussed how to get out of credit debt if you are in it. It taught me about saving money for retirement, as well as investing money. They explained how money should be invested in a bank, because they will give you interest, and without interest, money decreases in value. They also had a question and answer section. From this part of the workshop, I learned that if you are very good with your credit cards, you may be able to negotiate with credit card companies and reduce your monthly payments. This workshop was fun and informative, and I really enjoyed it.
Avon Breast Cancer Walk
On October 11, I got on a pink polo shirt and headed off to Bryant Park. I was going to the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, one of the many walks organized to help raise money to cure breast cancer. I was running late and was traveling there by train. On the train I decided to call in and make sure everything was ok. I called Jane and she told me that they could not cheer; it was completely unorganized. Apparently there were not really stations and the cheering of those participating in the walk was simply all over the place. What made this an experience for me was not actually going halfway and leaving, but rather thinking about these types of things. I began to think of subjects such as fund raising and charity, and it allowed me to put it into perspective and see what I thought of it. I really hope to participate in events similar to this, as well as contribute to charities later on in life.
Coloring Up Your Future
Today I attended my fifth workshop called “Coloring Up Your Future”. This workshop was held in the Vertical Campus building in room 2-125 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. I honestly felt this workshop would be a waste of my time and I just needed to fill in my requirement for community-global awareness. I just wanted to attend the workshop and get it over with. However, I was wrong. This was by far the most interesting workshop I’ve attended at Baruch. I learned a great deal from this workshop. The keynote speaker for this workshop was a former councilman named, Alfonso Quiroz, who is currently gay. He talked to us about how he went about running for councilman and informing the public that he was gay. He told us that he has been through many hardships but he has not regretted that fact that he has opened up to the public regarding his sexuality. Not only was he a very good speaker, but he nurtured the audience by giving them hope. He has achieved so many things in his past such as interning in the White House or working in Al Gore’s campaign in the 2001 Presidential Election. However, he was only an C student throughout high school. What made him the person is he now was the determination and desire to do better than anyone else around him. I hope that you guys can plan to attend this workshop if they offer it to you guys in the future.
Career Planning: Impression Management
This workshop discussed the importance of making good first impressions, and good imressions in general. We were spoken to about how we should conduct ourselves when in the company of people, especially professors, employers or anyone with authority. What was stressed was that the majority of communication is nonverbal. We communicate with authority figures, without even saying a word. We communicate through body language and facial expressions. What was taught was that we need to be aware of what we are doing when we are not talking, because if we look uncomfortable, inattentive, unhappy or anything similar to this, we will have a bad impression. Also discussed was that it is hard to reverse a bad impression, although it is possible. This workshop taught me to be more aware of my body language, and that people say way more than they think they do when not speaking.
Managing Relationships
On October 8, 2009, I attended a workshop called Managing Relationships. This was by far the best workshop that I had attended. We were lectured on how to handle the many relationships that we encounter during college. I was able to relate to many of the issues talked about because they affect me on a daily basis. We learned how to handle relationships between our parents, boyfriend/girlfriend, and new friends. Your daily schedule is much more different than that of high school. We do not have class 5 days a week, and we start class at different times during the day. You might also spend much more time studying and being away from home to get your work done, which may bring about issues with family, and intimate relationships. The best part of the workshop was undoubtedly the part where we had to meet new people. I met three new people named; Nikola, Sayem, and Albina. We were explained that it is very important to make new friends and to network because it will help us get a job after high school. Overall I thought this was a very good workshop, and I think this has helped me distinguish how to handle my relationships in college.
Library Database
On Thursday October 15,2009 I attended a workshop in the library called 30 minute workshops on how to utilize the school’s database efficiently and effectively. I had learned of this workshop through my friend and decided to go with her as well as some of my other friends. Upon arrival we saw a crwod of people surrounding the information desk. There were barely any seats left. After waiting for another 10 minutes for people to come, we were handed out a sheet of paper in which we were to give feedback on what was helpful about the presentation. After all the papers were handed out, the presentor started presenting. He went over the definition of a database and what it was and how we can utilize it. He then presented easier ways in which we can utilize the school’s database in order to make students’ lives easier since it helps students save a lot of time by searching up specific topics using specific words. He also taught us how to search by certain categories so that we can use proper documents for reference such as a news article or a book. Overall, I was very sastisfied with this workshop because I actually got something out of it and I learned how to use the database quickly and efficiently which is essential when I’m writing papers because that way I don’t have to waste so much time looking for research.
