Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

On Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at around 1pm, I attended the Gallery Tour. This was located in the Sydney Mishkin Gallery on 22nd Street. This workshop was a tremendous advantage to me, being that the paintings had something to do with business. The tour guide explained to us that these kinds of works of art are usually discussed in the business world, and so it is an important benefit to learn about them. One thing I like most about these paintings was that Mercedes painted them in such an abstract form, which took me quite some time to analyze the image. From this I realized that almost everybody can have their own unique interpretation of these paintings. In conclusion, this tour was a wonderful experience, and I truly recommend it to anyone in the school because art is also a fundamental part of the business world.

Breast Cancer Walk

On the morning of October 11, 2009 I woke up early in order to partake in cheering on the participants of the Avon Breast cancer walk.  It was a chilly but nonetheless beautiful day.  I was actually looking forward to attending the walk because I wanted to help out with a good cause and because I knew victims of breast cancer.  I was running late to the walk because of train problems.  Once I got out of the train station, I began to worry because I was close to half an hour late and I didn’t know where the rest of the class was.  I saw a group of people across the street from me wearing pink and that were cheering walkers on so I thought that was our class, but upon closer look I realized that it wasn’t.  As a result of that, I called Jane, our peer mentor only to find out that we weren’t cheering the walkers on anymore!  I was really disappointed because I had just wasted 3 hours commuting to and from the walk and also because I wasn’t able to do something for the walkers.  I was really glad however of the fact that there were other people there cheering the walkers on and encouraging them and helping the walkers pull through and finish the walk.  I’m sure that the walkers are really grateful and are given that extra push to finish.

Club Fair

On September 24, 2009, I attended the Club Fair at Baruch. I was once again astounded by the number of individuals that turned out for the event. I was also amazed how many clubs are actually at Baruch. There were clubs ranging from archery to bowling. If you were interested in anything at all, there is a great chance that you will find a club that relates to your interests. Personally, I was interested in joining the Accounting club because it is something that I may decide to pursue in the future. I was also advised that building connections with fellow accountants would be very helpful in a job search. I also had my eye on the archery club. I have always been fascinated by the bow and arrow ever since I watched Lord of The Rings. Although I did not join any clubs, I think that next year I will definitely make strides to join a club (most likely accounting).

Career Planning: Internship & Goal Setting

On Thursday, October 22,2009, I attended this workshop, which was hosted by the STARR Career Development Center. The workshop took place in room NVC 1-107 from 12-30-2pm. This was probably the most essential workshop of them all. The speaker spoke to us about the different kinds of internships that are available, which I had never known. She explained that we would have to maintain a certain GPA in order to even be acceptable. Therefore, she recommended we apply for internships during our sophomore year. She even handed out internship manuals, which I think will turn out to be extremely useful when applying for an internship. Overall, I recommend this workshop to almost everyone, because interships will eventually lead to your dream job.

Study Abroad Fair

Immediately following the freshmen reception, me and my friends went to the library to print something out.  Once we got into the library building, we saw a sign in the lobby that caught our eyes.  It was a sign for the study abroad fair being hosted in the multipurpose room of the VC on the 1st floor.  After printing, we decided to head over to the fair to check it out.  Upon entering, we saw a lot of different stations set up from a lot of different colleges which offered study abroad programs for Baruch students as well as CUNY students.  I saw stations set up from Hunter, various SUNY’s as well as other colleges.  My friends and I walked around the entire room, looking through each station to see what kind of study abroad program each college offers.  My friends and I were intrigued by this program offered by an independent company for study abroad programs to China.  The guy that was in charge of that particular station didn’t even seem to notice me and my friend.  He was busy talking to the people in the station next to his.  After a while, he finally noticed us and greeted us but in a half hearted manner.  He didn’t really seem interested or enthusiastic about his station or work.  So, me and my friends decided to go away from the station after asking him a few questions (which he didn’t really quite explain).  We continued to walk around until we finally found the station set up by Baruch itself.  There was a woman that greeted me and my friends really sincerely.  She seemed pleasant and nice and tried to assist me by asking if I had any questions and trying to explain each program.  She helped me answer questions such as financial aid in terms of study abroad programs as well as other requirements.  I was really happy that I went to this workshop because I actually got something out of it and also because I plan to study abroad in Asia next year.  Also, this was such a huge contrast to the freshmen reception so I enjoyed the fact that it helped me.

Managing Relationships in College

On Thursday, October 8, 2009, I attended the Managing Relationships workshop. This is a personal enrichment workshop which took place in room NVC 1-107 from 12-30-2pm. The title says it all on this one, the workshop literally showed us how to manage relationships. The proctor spoke about the various kinds of relationships one will face in life and how to deal with each one. We were then asked to walk around the room and introduce ourselves to about 5 new faces. This was, in my opinion, the most critical part of this workshop because it forced us to reach out of our typical comfort zones. This can be really helpful in life, especially in the business world. We also discussed how to manage our time with these different relationships and our busy life. In conclusion, this workshop was extremely valuable and I recommend it to everyone.

Gallary Tour

On October 6, 2009, I attended the Sydney Mishkin Gallary on 22nd st. At first, I thought the gallery was going to be much larger judging from the size of the building, but I soon realized it was very small. We looked through various artworks that were relatively all black and white. Since I am taking art history, I was able to implement different concepts that I have learned in class into the artworks that I viewed. I was able to analyze the various artworks and have a general idea what the artist was attempting to portray in the paintings. I think this tour was a good experience because it is very informative and I feel that exposure to various artworks is very good for a person. I also think that the students should be allowed to roam freely to view other paintings and artworks. We only covered about  4-5 paintings and I personally wanted to know a little more about the other paintings in the exhibit.

Freshman Reception 2009

After the first few weeks of college, I attended my first workshop with a couple of friends, the Freshman Reception, on September 17, 2009. This workshop was located in the Academic Advisement office, and was set up to allow students to ask any questions they have about classes that they want to take or classes that they will be required to take based on what they want to major or minor in, and also to make them feel more comfortable about their time at Baruch. During this workshop, I received a folder that had a paper stating all the requirements for Baruch. After attending this workshop, all the questions I had regarding classes were answered and I knew perfectly what the requirements of Baruch College were. I knew that I could always come to the Academic Advisement office if I ever had any questions regarding classes again, and it made me feel comfortable.

Breast Cancer Walk

On October 10th I attended the Breast Cancer Walk in Manhattan. I called Jane that day to see where we were meeting; however, when I arrived there, no one was there except for me. I must have arrived as soon as the group left unfortunately. This walk was very important to me because my Mom had Breast Cancer and succeeded when I was in the sixth grade. Even though I was not with the group, I still participated in the walk and it was very rewarding and my parents were proud of me for doing that. It was also great to see how many people attended the walk, hundreds of people. When I was finished walking, I took the MTA Bus transportation back uptown in Manhattan, where I live, and I have to share what I found on the Bus! I found a ten dollar bill on the seat which made my day even more exciting! I will now try to attend every breast walk in Manhattan. It is also great to see all the food products such as Special K Cereal which says on the front of the box that a portion of the sales will go to breast cancer research and I bought two boxes with that ten dollar bill. When I found that ten dollar bill, I knew that it would be a great idea to use it to help the fight against breast cancer.

Art Tour: Mercedes

On November 3rd 2009 I attended the Sidney Mishkin art gallery and it happened to be very interesting. I liked how the tour guide began by asking who here is interested in majoring in Business. Most of the students raised their hands and she stated how Art is important in the Business World. I learned that a lot of business deals are made in Museums and art galleries and we may have to be able to speak about art in business meetings or dinners. Therefore we have to have a wide range of knowledge, not only in business, but also in the arts. Since the paintings were in chronological order, we saw what Mercedes painted at the age of twelve and it was incredible. She painted a detailed human being, I could not believe that such a young child could paint something like that. We took the tour of her paintings from when she was a child to adulthood. Each painting had immense detail. Everything was amazing except for one thing and it had nothing to do with the artwork. It was the temperature in the room that was unbearable; however, it was worth it to see such artwork and talent. I was glad to have had the opportunity to see it.
