Club Fair

The club fair was a different experience for me since my high school. There were many more clubs at the club fair at Baruch, so much to choose from. The line to get in; however, was very long. It took at least twenty minutes to get in and it was so crowded when I went into where the club fair was being held; in the gym. It was so crowded it was hard to see every club station. I had to go up and down the isles at least three times. I did like and sign up for two of the clubs. They included the Wall Street Club because I am interested in Stock Trading and the finance/business world and the Alpha Accounting Club which is my potential major for the Zicklin School of Business. So far I have attended both to this day and did a lot of networking and learned many new things about the business world and companies.

Freshmen Reception

On September 17, 2009 I attended the freshmen reception on the 5th floor in hopes of getting something out of it such as learning the graduation requirements as well as what classes to choose for next semester.  I had expected the workshop to draw in a decent sized crowd-not too small and not too big, maybe around several hundred students max.  But once the day of the reception actually arrived, I along with my friends whom I went with were blown away by the amount of students that had actually shown up.  It was as if the entire freshmen class showed up for it!  Upon arrival with my friends, we waited on line for what felt like an eternity.  After waiting for a while (around 10-15 minutes) the line actually started to move and we were ushered in as a group, which I didn’t like since I felt like we were being rushed in like cattle.  After going inside the office, I along with many other freshmen had to wait yet another 15-20 minutes in order to get inside this small conference room before we were to meet with an academic counselor and of course get our planners signed.  When me and some of my fellow classmates were almost in the room and was really close to meeting with a counselor, one of the female advisors had come in and announced that almost all of the freshmen class had shown up for the reception, thinking that the workshop was mandatory. As a result of that they weren’t well prepared for it and so she told us to just get our planners signed and leave.  In my mind, I was thinking what the hell?!  I wasted more than half an hour waiting here for nothing other than to have a workshop completed.  Although I liked the fact that I fulfilled one of my workshops requirements, I was utterly disappointed by this workshop because I actually wanted to get something out of the workshop and I had waited over half an hour for nothing!   So, I was pretty let down by this.  I understood why such a situation occurred but I felt that they should have better prepared for it because after all, they sent out invitations to every freshman as well as put up fliers everywhere so they should have expected at least a pretty decent sized crowd coming in.  There were some people that got to meet with advisors though but they probably got there really early.  Overall, I was disappointed by this workshop because I didn’t get anything out of it but maybe it would have been better if I got there earlier.

Art Gallery

On November 3rd 2009 i attended the Sidney Mishkin art gallery and I am proud to say that this visit was a success.  One aspect that stood out to me the most was how the paintings were in chronological order.  I was able to see right away how art evolved over the years.  The part that really changed my aspect of art is that it plays a bug role in the business world.  Mercedes Matter’s paintings at a young age were more about realistic objects but as she got into her teen years they were more abstract pieces of painting.  To get the message on most of each paintings you had to stare at the painting for a few minutes as you find the hidden message.  For every painting, there is something Mercedes Matter is trying to tell us and this is the main reason I enjoy this paintings.  Overall, this trip to the Art Gallery was a success and I recommend this to anyone who is interested in not only art but business.

Mercedes Matters: A Retrospective Exhibit

On thuesday November 3 2009 I attended an art exhibit right here at Baruch college. Our exhibit had artworks of Mercedes Matters throughout her life. Her artworks are considered modern art, and we can see her grow in her styles of art as she ages. I learned that Mercedes Matters had been painting since she was a young child. As her earlier form of painting shows she painted more realistic objects, but as she grows out of her teens she painted more of  abstract pieces of painting. She used many colors and love painting shapes to create a balance in her artworks but her paintings did not model realistic objects. I never thought that I could get such a valuable art lesson just from the Baruch art museum, but that day I learned about a artist that I had never heard of before. In the future I hope to visit not only museums in the city but also the Baruch art museum.

Sidney Mishkin Gallery

On Tuesday November 3, I attended the Sidney Mishkin Gallery. There was a workshop there which involved an exhibition of Mercedes Matter. We were given a tour, during which we found out why art is important. We were told that art is an important part of the business world because it is easy to make money off it and easy to meet bosses in the business world that have an interest in art. After explaining this concept to us, the tour began. The paintings by Mercedes Matter were displayed in chronological order so that everyone is able to see how her art progressed and matured. Most of her paintings involve very simple objects, such as fruits and vegetables, but with creativity she was able to make them abstract. It was shocking that someone can dedicate their life to drawing the simplest of objects. I really enjoyed this exhibit and learned a lot from it.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

On October 11th, I woke up early to go to Bryant Park to show my support for the fight against Breast Cancer by cheering on the Avon Breast Cancer walkers. It was very early in the morning, and I did not particularly like waking up that early on the weekend, but I knew I was doing it for a good cause. When I arrived, I met up with my class as we went to the assigned cheering station. At this station we saw many people walking to show their support for breast cancer. This showed me that there are many people supporting the breast cancer fight, as it is a growing problem and needs support. Although I would prefer to be walking rather than just cheering I do believe that I helped the cause simply by cheering the people that were walking, which made them feel better about what they were doing.

SACC – How to Pass Mathematics

On October 15, 2009 I attended a mathematics workshop hoping to find key facts in passing my current math class. However, I was disappointed in how the workshop presented itself. The host used a book and read straight from the book and just stated obvious tips that many study workshops propose. I was hoping for actual experience from the host or actual math topics and how to solve them. There was no one in the workshop I knew and the workshop seemed slow. The host was not really enthusiastic about the topic. I did take all the knowledge from the workshop with me, but it would have been better if it gave mathematical examples of common mistakes or actual college experience from the hosts.  The workshop was short and there were complications in the beginning but the workshop did accomplish what it was supposed to do, teach us how to pass mathematics. The tips were really intended for overall, studying in general. There were some good mathematical hints but too few for a workshop focused on math.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

On October 11, 2009, I attended the Avon Breast Cancer Walk with my class hoping to support the walkers in the walk. Due to complications, however, we could not fully support the walkers and had to leave early. We did find other supporters and learned the dedication of others in the community and cheered them on while we could. We were set outside in the public and cheered for any walkers of the event and even though it was out of our comfort zone, we tried our best. It could have been improved if the station advisor knew where our station was supposed to be. Other than that, we learned how much support the fight against breast cancer has. The event was short and we could not fully accomplish what we intended to do but I feel like I gained new knowledge and might join the walk in the later years. I will not cheer those who walk because it seems complicated and will just choose to walk the course with others.

Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

This past Tuesday, November 3, 2009, I attended the mandatory Arts at Baruch workshop at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery on 22nd street. I, along with a friend, were given a tour by Sandra Karskin, who showed us a number of galleries by Mercedes Matter. When the tour first began, she asked us, “How many of you are planning to go into the business school?” Over half the people raised their hands. She then told us that art, even though hard to believe, is pure business and that there are many opportunities to make tons of money working with artworks. After introducing us with this fact, she finally went on to her tour, telling us about the works displayed. The pieces were quite abstract. You had to seriously look into the artworks to see the message it was trying to give. Overall, this workshop was very informing and interesting even though I had to wait over half-an-hour to get in.

Internship and career developement

On October 22, 2009 I attended a Internship workshop hosted by the Starr career development center. I learned that it is never too early to think about internships. Before the workshop, I never knew how competitive Internships can be and the amount of people that apply for internships are astounding. I also learned that in order to be even consider for internships I must keep a high GPA, and be active in school. Although it is earlier for freshman to go look for internship, its not early for us to learn more about the internship process. I learnt a lot about the internship process from that workshop and also any other information can be found in the Starr career center. I hope to gain more information about internship through the center in my next couple years in Baruch college. I hope with the information I learned from the workshop can help me get an internship in the future.
