Freshman Reception

On September 17, 2009, I attended an event called The Freshman Reception in which incoming freshman would be able to inform the class of 2013 about the various aspects of Baruch College. Unfortunately, this was not the case. A record of 2000+ freshmen came to take part in this workshop; therefore I did not gain any information that I wished to obtain. Personally, I think that they advertised the event to an excessive amount. Everyone I knew confirmed that they had received mail stating that this event was taking place, and there were many posters all around Baruch College inviting freshman to this event. I think that in the passing years, there were not as many individuals attending this workshop because of the lack of advertising for the event (which was given out in excess this year). This would have been a much more enriching experience if there were less people, or, if possible different days to attend this event in the future.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

On October 11, 2009, our freshman seminar group got together and went out to support those who were walking in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. Although it was a very brisk and cold morning, we stood for a good few hours on the corner of Bryant Park and cheered on the walkers. From prior knowledge, I know this walk is a very daunting task. It requires you to walk about 13 miles through the streets of NYC, plus the very chilly weather made it even more difficult. It was very enlightening to see so many individuals take part in this event, and it shows their support for this very deadly disease. Personally, I enjoyed participating and cheering on the walkers, and it was made better because I was able to cheer on alongside my classmates.

Internship and Goal Setting

On October 22, 2009, I attended a workshop on internship under the career exploration section from 12:30pm-2:00pm at room 1-107 located in the Vertical Campus building. Throughout the workshop, the internship coordinator spoke to us about the importance of internships, ways to look for internships and a lot more very useful information. I found out several corporations that are available for internships which I would like to have an opportunity to work for later on such as PWC and Debitte. Another way to search for internships is though the STARR search website which is a Baruch database that is very useful and user-friendly. The speaker also urged us to update our profile in order for us to search for internships that suits our interests. Through internships, we do not only get to know how it is to work in the field of our interests, but also to increase our chances of getting a job from the corporation we interned for after we graduated. Although interning is important, the speaker also told us that freshmen should focus on maintaining a strong grade point average in order to compete with other fellow colleagues for internships later on. Overall, I find this workshop very informing and helpful and I will definitely recommend this workshop for anyone that is interested in learning more about internships.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

On October 11, 2009, I woke up at 6 a.m. to get ready for the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. The reason for I had to wake up early is because I take three different public transportations in order for me to get to Byrant Park, where the Avon Breast Cancer Walk took place. Although I had to wake up early on a Sunday morning, I was very excited as I was getting ready since this is the first time I have ever participated in an Avon walk. When I arrived at the park, along with a few other colleagues, we went to the cheer stand that was assigned to our block. We stayed there and cheer from 9:45am to 12:00pm looking at the people walking hours and hours, yet still smiling as they become closer to their destination. I was very affected by their enthusiasm and found them very respectable for they have come together to achieve a common goal. This experience is definitely memorable and I will recommend others to get involved with the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in the future since it is a fun experience and they will not regret taking part in it.

Managing Relationships

On October 8, 2009, I attended a personal enrichment workshop on managing relationships in room 1-107 at the Vertical Campus from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. This workshop is held with the purpose to assist college freshmen to transit to their college lives easier within a shorter period of time. During the workshop, the presenter talked about handling different relationships with family, friends and partners. One of the main issues transiting from high school to college is the lack of time in college compared to having a lot of free time in high school. Therefore, one important task to master is time management. The speaker also informed us about the importance of building strong relationships with upperclassmen and professors that are related to our future career goal. Since we will need these relationships later on in life when we are seeking for jobs, knowing someone that works in the same field increases the chance of us getting a job. We will also need our professors for recommendations when we want to pursue our graduate degrees. I also found out for the first time that LinkedIn is a website that can help me network and build strong and close relationships with professionals of my interested career field. Overall, I find this workshop very informative and helpful for my future four years in Baruch and I think all freshmen should attend this workshop to find out more about building strong relationships with others.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter

Today November 3, 2009 I attended my final workshop. It was called Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition, that took place in the Sidney Mishkin Gallery from 1:00p.m.-2:00p.m. We were told to wait on line until called in. Once called in we left our jackets and bags by the coat rack and and got ready.  There was about 20-30 other people who would view these paintings beside me. Now although the gallery was not nearly as big as other galleries I have been to, I was still able to view beautiful abstract works of art from one wonderful artist. Mercedes Matter was very into portraying abstract art in various ways. We saw how she painted items at age 15 and also later in her life. In many of her paintings she used colors shapes, and fruits. We were asked by our guide to locate some of the fruits she painted such as, apples pears, and avocados. After we got to her midlife paintings we noticed how she was very into paintings that had triangles in them. We noticed them everywhere on her paintings and how they helped balance and “support” her art. I was told by the tour guide that these paintings do not all belong to Baruch College. As a matter of fact many owners of these paintings allow Baruch’s Art Gallery to have them, for many different reasons. Baruch though uses them for education purposes. I must say that for my last required workshop, it was quite interesting and i definitely recommend every classmate of mine to check out the art gallery here at Baruch College. Its open Tuesday-Thursday from Noon-5p.m. and on Thursdays noon-7p.m. located at 135 East 22nd St.

Sidney Miskin Gallery

Today on November 3th 2009, I went to “A Retrospective Exhibition” by Mercedes Matter at the Sidney Miskin Gallery located at Baruch’s Administrative Center from 12:45pm to 1:15pm. Dr. Sandra Karskin was our tour guide who took us around the art gallery and gave us helpful background information concerning the works of art displayed. The fairly small art gallery was presented in chronological order which showed viewers how the style of the artist’s works changed with time. Mercedes Matter started to paint at a very young age and her talent is definitely portrayed in her works. It was interesting to find out how Mercedes started out painting oil on canvas pieces with bright, vibrant colors like the “Table Top Still Life” and later in life drew darker and more abstract works with charcoal on canvas such as the “Still Life with Skulls”. The Sidney Miskin Gallery is one of my favorite workshops and I recommend it to other students because it adds diversity to the workshops we are required to attend. I learned a lot more about the artist Mercedes Matter than I ever knew before and gained a whole new perspective on art.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

On October 12 2009, at 9:30 am, there was a breast cancer walk at Bryant park. Although it was very early on a sunday I didn’t feel tired because it was for a great cost . Since we were the cheering station most of us wore pink, we also saw another cheering team there. The other cheering station were very enthusiastic which inspire us to be excited as well. The Avon breast cancer walk can raise awareness for breast cancer, so it was a very  meaningful event. I haven’t gone to many events like this but in the future I hope to go to more events that raise awareness on certain diseases. This breast cancer walk made me realize how a walk can help a cause. I learn that walks to raise awareness is a great and fun activity and I hope to go to more events like this.

Database Survival

The library seems to always have something going on. The “Workshops in 30″ offered at the library always provides students with interesting, very helpful information in an effective manner for students. They are short and usually have a motivated speaker. On October 15, I attended the workshop entitled”Database Survival”. Again, I was shocked by the resources available to students. The amount of information that we can find in the infinite (or as close to infinite as Baruch can provide) number of databases is astounding, including JSTOR. The simplicity of searching for information using the advanced search option put me at ease once I realized the weight it took off of my shoulders when it comes down to writing that paper I have due next week. It makes me glad to know that Baruch is so willing to help us, but they will not hunt us down to make use of the help, so fellow students take up the opportunities! I recommend attending any of these workshops, they may take up 30 minutes but they will save you much more time in the future.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

On October 12 at 9:30 a.m. I met up with our Avon Breast Cancer walk  cheerteam at Bryant Park. It was a wonderful sunny day to walk for a cause. Although it was early on a Sunday morning, I was happy to see so many of us along with the other cheer teams so excited about the cause. Even if we were not doing the walk, it still felt good to cheer on those who took on the task. It was quite moving to see the determination in the eyes of the walkers. It may not seem like we were doing much or even enough but doing something as simple as what we did can bring about some interest to others, and can possibly motivate more to make a difference. I have done many walks before and this one did not fail me, it has motivated me to not only participate in more walks but also to search for different events that support specific causes.
