Freshman Reception

Freshman Reception

Academic Enrichment – September 17, 2009

Unfortunately, I had to attend the Freshman Reception last week Thursday, September 17, 2009. The academic advisement workshop informed about the requirements needed to fulfill my major as well as choose a minor.  As much as I would of like the event to be engaging, it turned out to be poor.  For one, the event was unorganized, over-crowded, and mis-communication. You would think from a business school that important events such as these would be organized better, but I was wrong.  I don’t want to bash the “workshop”; it’s just that I expected much better, how would you feel if somebody was telling you important information, but you couldn’t hear. In the end, I can say that it helped me connect with new people…that’s about it.

Freshman Reception

I can basically describe the reception in one word- catastrophe. The faculty expected about 200 students but the turnout was over two times bigger than that. Due to this larger than usual attendance, the whole agenda was pretty much thrown out the window. After being placed in a room, one of our academic counselors (can’t remember her name lol) spoke to us briefly before signing our “passport.” I had totally different expectations and am disappointed that we didn’t really get to learn anything. Maybe next time they’ll more prepared and organized but thats even if they dare to try this again.

Freshman “Disaster” Reception

So, last Thursday I “would have” spent nearly 5 hours on the fifth floor which had been flooded with freshmen waiting to attend the reception.  I had two choices, do I wait in line fairly until my turn to enter or just skip everyone and get in there before it gets more crowded? I decided to just skip everyone and I got in, within the first 15mins (Thank God!). Anyway, so when I entered  I received my folder containing papers regarding academic standards etc. I had no clue what they meant but luckily there were some advisers who helped explain to everyone the importance of these papers, luckily before I got a chance to throw them out.  So I listened to a little lecture for about 5-6 mins or so, helped myself to refreshments and went around searching for whoever (including friends, lol no joke. I really wanted to get out of there, it was a total snooze) I could find to sign my “passport” . Finally after about 15mins I got my man Robert to sign my passport and I was out of there. But I guess it wasn’t such a terrible experience, seeing as I thought we had to stay from 12:30-2:00.  I hope all the other clubs are just as “long”. lol

Freshman Reception

So the day of Freshman Reception, a Thursday, I walked up the steps to the 5th floor and seeing a sudden mass of freshman all waiting for this one workshop. I thinking in my head was “oh… dear.” Like everyone else I waited for all of us to be filed into the room into an orderly fashion, and this took a little bit longer than I would have expected. Even though the wait was long and getting a signature was a hassle, I was able to walk around the room and learn about how being a freshman was actually an advantage. Adjusting to a different environment was part of everyday life Plus I finally was able have a hardcopy of all the requirements to become an accountant or marketer. Sadly I’m still undecided but I hope to play on my strengths and find a job that I can see myself doing for a long time. This workshop helped me focus on what I as a Freshman had to do , in college, in my classes and how to handle free time! It was a very helpful and enlightening experience!

Kanye Did What???!!!?!?!?!??

So is Kanye crazy or does he just need a piece of humble pie?  Some media insiders think that his little outburst at the MTV Awards on Sunday won’t really hurt his reputation since he has a history of being eratic and unpredictable.  But are the fans really going to turn against him? I mean really…..jumping on to stage for an award that you weren’t even nominated for seems a bit excessive.

Though he has apologized multiple times since the incident, you have to question his sincereity.  Is he apologizing because he got booed on stage or because his little stunt caused him to be one of the main headlines the next day(i.e.  all the negative media attention).  Of course, many people thought he was jerk for his behavior.  So much so, that even many celebrities felt compelled to speak out against him on tv, blogs, and even their personal twitter accounts.

So what are your thoughts love him, hate him, or just don’t care about him.  If your a fan, does this change your opinion of him or do you beleive that it’s just all about the music and the persona?

First Week Reflections

baruch-college

Hey Gang,

Hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day Weekend! This first week of school was invigorating.  I find that the first week of school is always a rush with the large crowds of students around campus, starting new and interesting classes, and preparing yourself for a busy fall schedule.  However,  I must admit that as a freshman in my first semester I was all but thrilled about college life.  Rather, I was intimidated by the number of students and lack of support that I had.  Like many situations, adjusting to college life took time.  I noticed in class on Tuesday that some of you seemed “burnt out” by the end of summer and not excited about being in class.  I truly hope that your views change as you progress in the semester.

As the incoming freshman class of 2009 I want to know what your expectations of school are.  What do you hope to achieve? What will you have to manage for your fall schedule…jobs (multiple), class work load, sports, commuting etc? What will you be doing and what is your motivation?
