Tour of Mishkin Gallery: Mercedes Matter

Yay!!! My final workshop!! The tour of the gallery went by very quickly. The space was very tiny and they only allowed 20 people in at a time. The at pieces were quite interesting. They call it abstract art but it just looked like haphazard dabs of paint on a canvas to me. Guess I dont know how to abstract things wel. (lol). I actually saw a few things in the art piece that the director was pointing out, so I can’t be that bad. The tour was over before I got a chance to take a full deep breath. I must admit I didnt mind at all though.

Mercedes Matter’s art gallery (arts at baruch)

A while back I went an art gallery featuring the work of Mercedes Matter’s. The art itself were mostly abstracts of tables with food and other amorphous blobs that reminded me of food which I did enjoyed. Although I still don’t understand why triangles were in each of her paintings and how exactly the help the art work. However i did have to wait close to forty minutes in a room that was warm as hell which sucked.

Values, Pressure and Choosing a major

On November 16, I went to this workshop where it discusses our hopes, goals and plans for the future and methods that can help us get there. It also talk about how outside influence can affect the major one chooses to be in. Adam Cox, one of the instructors, helped me realize other potential goals I can set for myself during the course of the year. Also I learned that factors, such as race/ethnicity, social class, and my family, can have a big influence in which way my career goes. Overall I am glad I attended. I learned that societal factor, in one way or another, largely does influence your major.

Sports at Baruch

Baruch_Bearcats

Sports is really not my forte, but I’ll do my best to give an overview of the sports scene at Baruch for those of you that may be interested in joining an athletics team during your time as students at Baruch. There are several different men’s and women’s sports teams at Baruch. The men’s sports consist of basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming and diving, cross country, soccer, and volleyball. Women’s consist of basketball, volleyball, softball, cross country, swimming and diving, tennis, and cheerleading and dance. All athletic teams rotate their seasons throughout the regular school year. In other words, some teams have their season during the fall semester while others hold their season during the spring. In order to be eligible to be a Bearcat you must be a full-time student and have/maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Before you start practicing with your team, you must also pass a medical clearance. Medical clearance will be consist mainly of a sports medicine questionnaire and any health forms that you may need to submit. Any student playing on a Baruch athletic team must also fill out a NCAA Compliance form. For more information, you can visit the Baruch athletic website at http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/.

Interviewing Skills Workshop

On November 12t 09 I attended the basic interview career workshop on the first floor of the V.C.  I found this workshop to be really useful in terms of what to do and what not to do when at an interviewed or being interviewed. You must ALWAYS research the company you are applying for a job, not just to show that you are interested but to show the interviewer that you are always prepared and are dedicated to the company. I also learned that the majority of the interview is focused on not what you say but what you do. Your physical appearance, how you’re dressed, firm handshake, smiling and paying attention to the interviewer as they speak. Always make eye contact! I really took this workshop seriously and I believe it will help me in the future when I apply for a job and get called in for an interview.

Career Planning: Basic Interviewing Skills

On November 12,2009, I attended a  career workshop on basic interviewing . During the  workshop I learned the  do’s and dont’s when goin to a interview. Like doing your resarch on the company before the interview  so the interviewer sees that your interested in their copmany.Women should wear skirt or pant suits but do your rearch on the attire of the company. Women should also wear  low heel shoes. Women should  not wear brown or green suits or perfume. Have  a smile and a firm handshake when greeting the interviwer. During the interview, you should  listen actively and  after  ask any questions  you  have. When the interview is over, write notes and a  thank you letter

Mercedes Matters-Art

Last Tuesday I attended the workshop for art in the Mishkim art gallery. The art was all done by Mercedes Matters who had donated some of her paintings. Her art was all in abstract and modern form. As time had gone on throughout her life. Mercedes art became more and more abstract. This was the first time I had seen this type of art form. It seemed that she liked to draw alot of triangles and tables. I found it interesting and felt informed after the tour. I am looking forward to going to Moma to see some more of this type of art.

Mercedes Matters (Arts at Baruch)!

What an experience this workshop was! It was very fortunate that Naketa, Regina and I got to the workshop early because the crowd after was pretty intense. It was a 20 min session full of art terms and paintings, lucky I fancy art and it was a good feeling to finally be in an art gallery. The way to analyze art and find a deeper meaning was enlightening to me, but as I found out its basically on how you interpret a work of art, there is no right or wrong answer. Paintings are now to bring up emotions and a higher level of thinking instead of painting something we see everyday Mercedes would paint a canvas full of abnormality. It really was inspiring, I really liked how she would use different colors beyond the norm and express herself in ways that seem awkward to some or beautiful to others! It was also really interesting to know that business and art intertwine like puzzle pieces, I would have thought art was not so important to know for business.

I really enjoyed this workshop the most, why? Because I actually got to do something walk around and evaluate a piece of work, it was also refreshing to get away from hearing “No or wrong!” whenever I came up with a thought. She definitely inspired me to start drawing again and taking time away from the stress of college life!
