Career Exploitation

October 20, 2009

I attended the SEO Intership on tuesday in hopes of trying to narrrow down a career path.  SEO offers interships for students looking to advance in the finace field. Also, they provided a list of do’s and don’ts in terms of dressing, resume applications, facebook profiles, etiquette, ethics.  The program is merit based, also they offer many fields such as securites, asset management, GLC leadership program.   Asset Management would be a field that I work in because your responsiblity lies updating the comapnies stock as well as indicating their capital to investors.  Attending the SEO internship was very informative and I learned a plethora of information in regards to the finance field, SEO program, and network with a few of the alumnis.

Mediating Conflicts & Resolving

This workshop was about learning the ways to solve problems in college. We learned that if there is a problem between a student and a teacher, or students we can call the Ombuds office to talk to a mediator. That person then has a meeting with you to discuss your issue and the mediator then acts somewhat like an ambassador in which the person goes towards the teacher or student you have  a problem with and talks it out. I learned the proper way of solving problems and also that if i have a problem with a grade i think i deserved better for, i can talk to the mediator to have this problem solved if talking to the teacher does not work. Sometimes these conflicts do not get resolved in your favor though.

Basic Interviewing Techniques Workshop

On October 29 I went to the Basic Interviewing Techniques Workshop in the NVC building room 1-107.  The workshop was about some fundamental steps to take in order to increase chances of obtaining a job. There are a lot of things needed to prepare for an interview. I realized that there were lots of things need to be prepared well before the interview. Those things included  researching the corporation, reviewing the resume, practicing answering potential interview questions and so on. During the presentation, she showed what we should  do and not do during an interview. For example, how to properly shake an interviewers hand and how not to. According to her, this was the most important part of the interview, the non-vocal communication which would have 68% success of getting the job. In addition, managing anxiety and proper business attire was also another important factor.  Since I never had a job before, i have a better understanding of how to increase my chances of doing well in an interview.

Internships and Goal Setting

I think this workshop was Great! I’m so eager to start interning now. The speaker gave us a wealth of information about interning, goal setting and even some community service tasks. I’m still undecided about the exact career path I want to take when i’m done school, but i’m pretty sure interning will help me to make a good choice. The presenter was very engaging and allowed the students to participate in the discussion. It started on time and finished a little early (thank God). I thought 2 hrs for a workshop was pushing it. I give this one a (9 out of 10) for its content and for giving us a free guide for internships.

Managing Relationships!

What can I say? hmmmmm… This workshop was enlightening to a certain extent. It was pretty packed in the room and people had to go chair hunting. Information wise, I really didn’t learn anything new but it was a good way to meet a few new people. The workshop was more examples of things that change in your relationships than it was solutions. I’m not really having any trouble managing my relationships since I used to have a 9-5 job so I pretty much know how it goes. Overall it was a 7 out of 10. lol

Internships & Goal setting!

This workshop was AWESOME, even though it was long, it was power packed with tons of information that I know will help me in the future. I plan to take a few internships in my college career because I know that they will really good on my resume and that experience is always good! Knowing that I can have so much help to obtain an internship is a pleasant thought. Even though having an internship is something of the future, its not terrible to prepare! Although I wasn’t happy when we had to go to the other workshops to have the help she provides for resumes and interview skills. I would like to have that option sometime in the future but I dont know if I can make the other workshops. Either way this was an enlightening experience and I do hope I can find time to visit the Starr center!

Internships and Goal Setting

On October 22nd, I attended a career exploration workshop about internships and goal setting. The woman who presented the workshop is the internship coordinator here at Baruch. She had a wealth of information about how to network, work on a resume and ultimately get an internship. We were given manuals with important information and basically began deciding what kind of internship we may want to pursue and what we hope to get out of the experience. For me, it was hard to answer these questions because I’m not even sure what I want to major in. Luckily, most internships are recommended for juniors and seniors who are looking for full time jobs after graduation.

Managing Relationships!

This in my opinion was really helpful and aimed at a lot of things that were troubling me greatly at the time. Before I tried to balance time with my family, and my friends but in the end I found that my grades were slipping.  IT’S SO HARD! It hurts me in many ways not being around my family as much as I’d like to. I come home and do hw, and then sleep. The weekends is the only time I really get to be with my family. Even then its a hassle to be with them because I work long and late hours. I miss meals, hours of sleep, laughing with my family. This workshop gave ideas on how to fix these worries, or at least see the school’s shrink. Which at some point I’d really like to go, college has been extremely stressful for me lately and it would be great to talk to someone about it. This workshop spoke to me directly and gave many solutions, I hope that I can use these ideas into my own life to lessen the effect of school.

Database Survival

I attended this workshop that took place in the lobby of the library. In this workshop there were more people than expected so i had to stand up through it. this workshop explained the database search engine of the library’s website. It was explained throughly and also we were taught how to input the right search to get the right results. Mainly it was just to link us to articles and other documents on the specific subject we wanted to see. It is a useful tool to use when doing research and i will use it when i need it. This workshop was helpful and it taught me a new way to use baruch’s resources.
