The club fair was a pretty exciting event to attend. There were way more clubs than I had expected but still not many of them really appealed to me except for the “Archery Club”. I’ve always been interested in archery and am possibly thinking about joining this club. But for the first semester I really don’t plan on joining any clubs, just because I want to get more used to the the working structure and classes. Hopefully second semester I will join though!
The Club Fair
Ah, the club fair. I really have to say it was more than I expected it to be! It was great! So much activity going on! Although it was hard to learn about a group considering the pushing and shoving and some of the people were just plain rude. Even though I couldnt really decide on a club – clubs really sure did decide on me! I felt mobbed. Haha, it was funny really because it was more of a correlation effect. One group finds me and says to join their club (they didnt have a booth so I was caught off gaurd while standing in a mass of people) it was an indian dancing club. I found it funny how she talked on and on, when I told her I wasnt that great at dancing indian dances (you should see them sometime, its kinda hilarious seeing me dance that way) that it brings up bad memories. She told me it was a club that could help me get better, so I said sure. Sadly the flyer says prepare a 1 min dance… WHAT?! I wish I could dance an Indian dance for more than 30 seconds without looking absolutely ridiculous. I found that was an unfair requirement haha. I’ll try my best – but I assure all that its not going to be a pretty sight. I wont stop myself from it, but if its too much then I can walk away saying “I tried”.
Sonia Sotomayor
So this workshop has happened quite some time ago, haha and I remember just a few things that has stuck on my mind. But I feel like I need to add some background of this workshop. It was pretty much listening to 3 professors (one being my own!) and their different perspectives on the new supreme court judge , Sonia Sotomayor. I fail to recall the names of the professors and I’m deeply sorry. Although Professor Des Jardins (my professor) talked about how empowering it was for a woman and how her image and the way she held herself in public was a huge key that made her so interesting. Another professor talked about the way that most Latinos and African American people of America are put down and that they are judged for crimes (as prime suspects) how she breaks a small barrier. I found that this was pretty interesting because not only did they talk about Ms Sotomayor but they talked about some pretty tough issues that many are facing today that can be addressed by our new judge. After that workshop I felt that no matter who you are and where you come from that there is always a better future for you.
Club Fair
Now I must say, the club fair was bustling with students. It was even more crowded than the freshmen reception. Oh wait, freshmen reception was only for freshmen. Anyways, there was a really long line to get into the gymnasium. So therefore, I cut the line and went inside without swiping. Bad thing to do, right? Well its kind of become a habit for me. I used to cut the lunch line in high school years. I’ll change for sure though. Once, I got in, I went to the desk that gave out signature. There I received my autograph and was free to leave or browse around. I chose to browse around. I took my time to browse around and signed up for some clubs, such as Taekwondo. In the middle of my browsing period, there was the routine dance off in the middle of the gymnasium. After walking around, I felt there was really nothing to do so I left. Went outside to grab something to eat. And thats how my day at the club fair went.
The College Fair
I orginally went to the fair thinking that i would be able to get a good idea of what clubs are available at Baruch but was horrified by the 300 plus people all looking to do the same thing. There was so many people there that i was barly able to get around let alone find any clubs that i was interested in. Instead i walked from stand to stand signing up for free food, at least the chinese food was good.
Club Fair
Student Life – September 25, 2009
Numerous amounts of clubs, organizations, fraternity and sororities all gathered together to promote and welcome newcomers into their organizations. The event was cool, infromative, interactive, and enjoyable. Being an attendee myself, I met new people, joined two clubs, and perticipated in little events that were held inside of the fair. Overall, it was a great experience and I enjoyed every minute of it.
The Freshman Reception Workshop
I’ve attended the Freshman Reception on September 17, 2009 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. Going to this workshop helped me to fulfill the Academic Enrichment category. A week prior to this workshop, freshmen have received an invitation from college to attend it and since it helps me to get through the workshop attendance passport, I’ve decided to give it a shot.
The reception was overcrowded. 5-215 was filled with freshmen and it was impossible to understand what was going on and where due to poor organization of this event. However, I did obtain some information from the academic counselor on requirements for graduation and minors/majors.
To end on a positive note, meeting new people at the reception further took me out of my comfort zone. Communication with other freshmen is a key to success.
Club fair!!!
Club fair was pretty exciting to me. I was just concerned with finding the Caribbean Student’s association table because I was very interested in that group. There was entertainment and even refreshments at this fair. It had alot more clubs there than at convocation which made it even harder to chose the right club to join. I still havent made up my mind if i’ll be in any clubs this semester but definitely from next semester. I think I’m gonna focus on trying to get in school mode for now, but who knows……
Sonia Sotomayor
WOW!!! I had to start this post like this. This was a very interesting seminar. My history teacher was the one that invited us to this seminar. We didnt even notice that it counted for a freshman seminar, so it was a win win situation. The speakers at this seminar were very engaging and informative. I learned so much about the new Supreme court judge (ms. Sotomayor), and i learned so much about women’s rights on a whole. Women really have come a long way and I hope to continue to help to expand on that. I’m very happy I went to this one.
Freshman reception
Freshman reception was on the 17th sept and it was total CHAOS!! I came out of the elevator on the 5th floor to be greeted my a massive crowd of freshmen trying to get into this reception as well. I didnt expect such a huge crowd since I received an invitation in the mail and realised that no everybody got that same invite.
I initially thought that this reception would be a bit more organized where a group of us would be in a theatre style room and maybe hear a little bit from our counselors about chosing courses for our second semester. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! I’m still not sure what was the purpose of us being there. It was nice that one of the counselors walked around appologizing for the confusion since they were not catering for such a huge crowd. Hopefully we get a re-do for that one…
