Diversity Career Summit

Yesterday during club hours a flyer with the words networking caught my attention because nowadays it’s all about who you know. Therefore I made my way though to meet with the representatives from MLT, SEO, and Inroads who were offering paid internships. All through out the meeting they kept mentioning “sophomores and juniors apply”. And I said to myself, there must be something for freshmen. Therefore when it was over I walked over to all three, introduced myself and asked them what opportunities did they have for me. SEO told me they actually did have a program for freshman, while the other two said to apply anyways, either way a lot of people don’t get in on their first try.

I started college with 20 credits and by the end of this year I should have about 50 credits. I believe that should be enough to be considered a sophomore if I apply. I’m not sure, I’m going to check with them first. Therefore that is what I am going to be doing this weekend. (If I can get to it because since I just turned 18 my job is taking advantage and giving me really late hours!)

Brand Yourself

I went to the event on tuesday night, Brand Yourself, sponsored by ALPFA. Many representatives from Ernst & Young, JP Morgan Chase, Johnson & Johnson, etc. were there. I got to network with all these prestigious corporations. At first I can’t deny I was pretty nervous, I didn’t know we all got 3 minutes alone with them. But once I started, 3 minutes seemed to fly by and I wanted to buy more time. Most of them were surprised at how young I was and my interest to start my career. Although I am too young for the requirements they set in order to have an internship with them, I still got there emails and numbers, which allows me to keep in touch with them. And next year when I am ready to intern they will know who I am already.

Workshop #2: Blood Drive

On 10/6/09, I attended the Blood Drive which was held in the multipurpose room. I had signed up for this event weeks in advance at the Blood Drive desk which had been stationed in the lobby of the 2nd floor. I had donated blood once before during my senior year of high school so I thought that it would be a good idea to donate again because of my previous experience which had gone very well.

On the day of my appointment, I entered the multipurpose and I had to sign in at the front desk. After completing the required health form, I waited for one of the nurses to call me so that I could be screened to see if I was healthy to give blood. The nurse determined that I was eligible to donate so I moved on to the next station to wait my turn to give blood. A little while later, I successfully gave blood and then I was directed to the refreshment table where I had sugary foods and drinks in order to help my body replenish itself. Overall, the experience went very well. I think donating blood is extremely important because hospitals are always looking for blood for those who are in need. My blood type is O-positive which means I am a universal donor and that anyone can use my blood. So I will donate whenever I have the opportunity to do so and I highly recommend everyone to consider donating as well because it is a great way for healthy people to give back to society by helping to save lives.

Building and Managing Relationship in College

October 8th,2009 is the day i attended the fourth workshop required by freshman seminar. It is a workshop categorized at personal enrichment section. The speaker is from department of psychology, i wished i had taken the class before this workshop, so that i would have knew the person she mentioned during the workshop.

In the workshop, the speaker asked the listeners to participle some simple activities, in order to let us be more involved and gain more understanding about the topic. Although the activities are as simple as sharing experiences and say “hello” to strangers, but i wasn’t feel to do what she said. What i did was only half of what she said. One thing that i really gain from this workshop is get to the name of a classmate from anthropology class; since i was not able to have much conversation with her during class time, so when the speaker request us to speak with people from other section, i walked toward her and asked her name.

Nature of Langscape, Nature of Photograph

Honestly, i was 15 minutes late for the workshop.  Again, attended this workshop was not included in my daily plan. However, my friend and i made the fortune, we were both accepted to attend this workshop at the last 15 minutes. Unlike those who came a bit later, we were able to get signature as prove that we attended this workshop.

When my friend and i eventually found the building where this workshop held, we entered and saw some other students, who might came in a minute or two ahead of us. While waiting for the lady to confirm with the speaker whether eligible to be signed as participant, i was attracted by a photograph which is snapshot of a backyard from Janpan. This photograph remained me the Chinese backyard i visited, which located at second floor of Metropolitican Museum of Art. Althoug the main object of this photograph was not Chinese style, but when i saw the picture i felt warm deep in heart, it is a feeling exist only when i stay with my family. Therefore, i like the picture.

There are lot of amazing pictures attraction my attention. And thus, when i was about to leave i grab some of the informations from reference table. Surprisingly, the guard told me that i am the first person who has special feeling about this gallary, so i had a short discussion with the guard regarding the art works and left for my next class.

Library Basics

On September 17,2009, I attened two workshops within the two hours which originally set for clubs. In my opinion, the second workshops was a gift from both the first workshop and Anthropology class; because the first workshop was too short and left us with plenty of time, so my friends and I decided  to print out articles for Anthropology class in library. When we entered library, a worker handed us a flyer which announced a workshop will be hold in library within few minutes. At first my friends and i were struggled because there was limited seats and we needed time to print out articles, so we might not able to attend this workshop. However, when i finished printing, i saw the worker moved chairs from other place to offer more students, like us, to participle. Therefore, i decided to accept the offer, sat on one of the chairs, and began to pay attention to the workshop.

The speaker of the workshop proved lots of informations that might be very useful in the future. One of the feature, introduced by the speaker, that i like the most is the feature which enable students to schedule a research consultation. Since i am not good at work on research papers, it will be a great tool for me to use when i need. In general, the library is similar to the the general public library i used to go, but there is more services in this library compare to the public library.

In fact, i like the workshop because the speaker had introduced many useful informations that will benefit the listeners, when we need the sources for each individual course in the future.

Freshman Reception 2009

September 17,2009, which is approximately a month ago, i attended the first workshop as official Baruch freshman. It was the first workshop i had attended that contains largest amount of participants, and shortest time range. The workshop happened on Thursday right after art history class, when i got off from the class, i went down immedicately with my friends to room 5-125, which is the location posted on the invitation card. Surprisingly, the hallway in front of the room was heavily overcrowded. We tried to look for a friend from our English class, but we could only see people’s head and our cellphone wasn’t function by that time. And thus, i could only stay with my friends and wondered what would happen next.

After the long waiting, we were placed in a room for the workshop. when i settle down in a seat, i recognized the room that i was in is the room for my political class. Usually, when i have class at this room i will never pick a seat that is all the way at the back. However, i had no choice but sat over the back row. Then a speaker came in, explained the unexpected situation they had this time, and they release soon after they answered few questions. I got signature on my planer and left with my friend. Although the situation was confused, but it was great to end a workshop so early that i could have more free times.

Building and Managing Relationships in College

This was my Personal Enrichment workshop I attended on October 8th 2009. The event was located in room 107 known as Multipurpose room and I was there with some other friends on time. The room got filled mostly with freshmans and I was so glad that we were there early that we got front seats.  To make the story short, the whole workshop was about how to build any kind of relationship and even about the transition of relationship with our families after getting inrolled in college. I was so happy to hear different kinds  point of views not only from the lecturer but also some of the students who shared their experiences. I guess Ilearned that building relationship with different kinds of people help, and I am going to implement that in my college life.

Ehuang workshop 3 – Managing Relationships in College

On October 1, 2009, I attended Managing Relationships in College from 12:30pm-2:30pm at room 1-107.  Managing Relationship workshop was really organized and a bit overcrowded.  But it shown me all the different types of relationship such as friendship, family, romance and business.  They also explain to me how to deal with relationship in college when the relationship really counts such as friendship and romance ones.  Cause in the future it provide networks with people that might get you a job.

This workshop gave me feel that Baruch College really does care about us.  And they went into some of these personal problems that we might face in an everyday life.  I think this workshop put myself inside the comfort zone, since it tells me how to deal with them when I need help.  This workshop exceeded my expectation by the quality of the information and the interactive activities.  I would recommend it to anyone because everyone has relationship problems whether its family or friends.

Art Gallery: Arts @ Baruch 10/6/09

Modern Art has always appealed to me when visiting art exhibits, museums and galleries. Baruch’s Art gallery is filled with photographs of nature, farms, animals, and people performing different tasks. Although i didn’t make it in time for the tour, the tour guide allowed me to take a tour of the photographs on my own. Two pictures that appealed to me the most is a picture of a young boy smiling while milking a cow as well and a birds eye view of a field that has just been trimmed.

The young boy milking a cow is interesting to me because it reminded me of when I was in the 2nd grade and I visited a farm upstate. I milked a cow for the first time there and struggled for a really long time before I was able to do it. The boy’s wide smile reminded me of the same facial expression I had on when I finally milked the cow. I felt proud for my accomplishment and couldn’t help but smile. The second photograph of the field reminds me of the weird crop circles that farmers would find on their crops unexpectedly. The way the grass was cut, and the lines that were left made unusual design.

Visiting the Gallery was a good experience and I would recommend everyone to visit there at least once in their Baruch experience.
