Ehuang workshop 2 – Club Fair

On September 24, 2009, I attended Club Fair from 12:00pm-2:30pm at ARC main gym.  The club fair was really organized and a bit overcrowded.  But it shown me all the different clubs that is around in Baruch College.  In fact, I applied to several different clubs such as the VITA, handball, archery, and many other clubs.  Not sure if I can make it to all those clubs, but we will see how I can manage that.  In the end, I just want to apply to some clubs that would help me to make some good friends.

This workshop gave me a glimpse on how big and organized Baruch College is.  And how people can just start clubs like that guy who was giving out flyers to promote his new club.  I think this workshop put myself inside the comfort zone, since I wanted to join some club but at the same time I didn’t know how to apply to those clubs.  This workshop exceeded my expectation by the organization and size of it.  I would recommend it to anyone because it would help people like myself to make new and better friends.

Work Shop 2- Club Fair

I went to the club fair this past thursday and enjoyed it. I learned about several different clubs at Baruch and found some I really liked. The fair was also very organized and not disorderly like the freshman reception was. I joined a few clubs and look forward to attending their meetings. I also fulfilled some of my hours for the Sigma Alpha Delta Honor Society. I worked on promotions during those 2 hours and helped attract prospective members to the Sigma Alpha Delta stall. I look forward to joining the honor society.

Another club I would really like to join is the Finance and Economics Society. I want to be in this club so that i can learn alot about the world of Finance. This is one of my possible major choices so I feel it can help me prepare for the major. I am also considering joining the Muslim Student Association and Pakistani Student Association because those two clubs help me connect to my culture and religion. Being a part of those two clubs will also help me meet people from the same background as me. I attended a few of their meeting and events already and enjoyed it. I liked the club fair alot and learned alot about the organizations at Baruch. I am glad the fair took place and it helped me join some of these clubs.

Work Shop 1- Freshman Reception

I went to this workshop because I thought it would help me out with my academic career but it did far from that. The workshop was very unorganized and all the freshmen had to wait on a long line to even get into the advisement center. After entering the advisement center, we had to wait on another huge line. By the time we got into the main room, all the food was gone and there seemed to be no reception at all. A lady came bustling through the crowd and said the advisement center was unprepared and that there would be no freshman reception.

I was really disappointed because I was expecting a question and answer session where we could ask questions about the school. I for one wanted to know how to successfully graduate in 3 years. After the lady made that announcement, she told us to give our planners to the advisors and they would sign off on them. I did so and left the reception which is a complete failure. I ended up wasting my time waiting on that line for absolutely nothing and did not experience any enrichment whatsoever. I hope the next few workshops will actually help me in some way.

Ehuang workshop 1 – Changing America:Judge Sonia Sotomayor

On September 22, 2009, I attended Changing America:Judge Sonia Sotomayor workshop from 12:45pm-1:40pm at VC 7:150.  The workshop was really about how blacks were treated unfairly in the past and present.  And how a new race is taking on that position which is the Mexicans and Latinos.  Even though, blacks were treated unfairly, Sonia Sotomayor was still able to get a political power position.

This workshop explains to me how blacks were being suppressed and how this one woman was able to reach the top which she got hold of political power.  I learn that there is things that would stop you in life, but it can be easily be overcome.  This workshop did not take me outside of my comfort zone because I can understand how it feels like.  This workshop passed my expectation by the detail of how this woman did it.  I would recommend this to another student because I liked it.

Workshop 2 – Club Fair

On September 24th I attended the Club Fair in the gymnasium. The Club Fair was a very interesting experience. I think that I learned a lot about the different clubs and student communities offered at Baruch college. The room was extremely crowded and I felt like I wouldn’t be able to find a club that would interest me.

After a long while of walking around I found a bunch of different variety of clubs. They had a bunch of asain culture organizations, sports clubs, and a bunch of other stuff. The clubs that I found that really drew me in were the ones offering candy at their stand.

workshop#2 Changing America

Today, I went to the Changing America: Judge Sonia Sotomayor workshop. The Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor was born in Bronx and raised by her mother since her father died when she was only 9.She was appointed to be the Supreme Court judge by President Obama May 2009.In the long history of the U.S Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor is only the third female judge in its history.

I feel that discrimination still exists in the United States, no matter racial discrimination or sexual discrimination. This makes our society not fair. Here is an example one presenter stated in the workshop: two professors from the University of Chicago and Massachusetts Institute of Technology sent nearly 5000 resumes to companies in New York and Boston, and the resumes with typical white names got 50 percents more chance to an interview than the resumes with typical black names.

Discrimination impedes our social development. Though the situation is changing better now, we still need to work hard on eliminating discrimination.

Workshop #1 Freshman reception

Last Thursday, I went to the freshman reception workshop. I got a lot of information there.  Though, the workshop was pretty short but the information I got there is really helpful.

Now I know what courses I need to take if I want to get into the business school. This helps me have a better plan for the next four years and feel less confusion.  Also, now I have a better understanding on how GPA will be counted.

Workshop #1 – Freshman Reception

The Freshman Reception in the library was very enlightning. I recieved a bunch of pamphlets that served to be pretty helpful. Some of these pamphlets include ones about Informational Studies and Degree Works. I talked breifly with the receptionist about the different possible major and minor opportunities offered at Baruch College and she gave me some interesting advice.

I was surprised that the Freshman Reception workshop did not meet the expected head count that they planned out. I found it to be veryy useful in planning my time at baruch. The people seemed very helpful and I was able to learn a lot

Freshmen Reception

Freshmen Reception 2009

On Thursday September 17, i attended the freshmen reception workshop at the center for academic advisement on the 5th floor. I was expecting it to be a meeting where all the academic advisors talk to us about our experience so far and that we would have a chance to talk to people. But it did not go that way at all. They were not expecting the outcome to be so big, since last year only 200 students showed up compared to this year where 2,000 people showed up. Therefore, nothing was ready and the room was extremely crowded. After getting my planner signed, (and munching on some delicious cookies and drinking lemonade) we started to leave when we finally got a chance to talk to someone. One of the academic advisors asked me what my major was. I told him i was planning to major in accounting and he began telling me everything that i should expect. He told me to take the excel exam as soon as i can and to get it out of the way now before our final exams. This was great advice and I’m planning to take it soon. Overall the reception was not what i expected, but it ended up being helpful for me.

workshop #2

Library Workshop

This workshop was located at Neurman Library.  I went there with the information i got from  my friends Fanta and Vanessa. We were there on time just right after the Freshman reception and that made us so happy because we could cover to workshops in a day. We actually had to wait some few minutes for it to start.

The Librarians were there ready to teach us how to access the Library and informations. She told us a lot about Library which I never knew before. Now am proud I know how to get informations using my school Library and also other libraries just by using my ID. I now know how to get references, borrowing of anything and it’s polices even more interesting how to chat with librarians.

This workshop was real nice and worth to attend according to my point of view.
