CAMA EVENT

About three weeks ago on a Saturday I attended the CAMA event hleld at the Goldman Sach  building located on Oldslip  by Wall Street. It was a very interesting meeting held from 9 am to 3 pm. Although they spoke about a lot of terms that I myself didnt understand mostly because I am a freshmen and have not been able to take buissness classes yet. There were things that I was able to pick up on when they spoke about the increasment of profit the company makes he projected a graph that reminded me of Concavity which at the time I had learned about in my Calculus class.

They also spoke about what they are looking for when it comes to hiring. They spoke about how they want someone that knows how to deal with time management.  One of the ladies told us how she went tot baruch and was able to manage having a 3.0 or higher and working during school. I wondered how she was able to mange all of that, i didnt get the chanceto ask her that question. They also want a well rounded person some one that is able to tell us what else is going on inthe world. They want a smart intellectual person that not only  can be able to do their assigned task but someone who  can hold a conversation. She also spoke about how when she first came to work at Goldman Sachh her first duty was to organize and shed papaers for higher bosses . At first she didnt understand why someone who graduated from baruch with a high degree would go through alll that educatino just to organize papers. She soon realized that everyone has to start somewhere. Then an irish guy on the panel stated that little did she know that that job was very important and everything counts. Overall i enjoyed being there. Being able to be involved in an organization such as NABA helped me adjust to the real world and will also enable me to get to establish my name better, and only progress in Baruch and the professional world.

Community-Global Awareness

In this workshop we learned about the life and transition of Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor from her humble beginnings in the Bronx to one of the most powerful judges in the United States. There were a lot of attendees at the workshop and they seemed very interested in learning about her rise to greatness. I found it very amazing that a woman of Mexican decent was able to become a Supreme Court justice.

I think that a lot of people at the workshop were able to relate to Sotomayor because of the struggles she went though to get to where she is today. A lot of the workshop also talked about racism and discrimination as opposed to just the justice. Thanks to the workshop I had found a new interest in who can be considered one of the most powerful people in the country.

Arts at Baruch – Gallery Tour

It was amazing to learn about the rich amount of artworks that Baruch holds. I never knew that there was such a rich collection of art at a business school. The art work at the exhibit was very contemporary and seemed like stuff that you would see in the MoMa

It was very interesting to look at the different art pieces because in art history we learned how to look at art. It was amazing how my perspective of these works changed drastically when I started to examine the deeper meanings of different pieces.

Art at Baruch #2

Einstein’s Dream

11/19/09

7:30-8:30

Bernie West Theatre

After seeing the first concert in the Engelman Recital Hall, I began to be interested to see performance in Baruch. This time I saw isn’t a concert but a theatre. This performance was produced by Students, but it was so great that I thought it was performed by some professional. Although the story is quite abstract and I didn’t really know what is happening in the play, I enjoyed it very much and I will see what other performance can I see in the next semester.

Workshops

1. Community-Global awareness :: Blood Drive

For this workshop, I went to the Blood Drive on the 7th of October. When I received an e-mail that there would be a blood drive, I was slightly interested as I had never donated blood. At first, I didn’t know this would count as a workshop too, and as I found out about it, I was most certain to go. It was more complicated than I thought: what I had in mind was to simply give blood, but I was told to read something beforehand, write a form and wait. And so I did. As I was waiting in line, I realized the room was divided in half: the inner room was where the actual “donating blood process” was going on and the other (where I was waiting in) was where each of us were being tested of whether or not we are eligible to donate blood. My turn came, and a doctor asked of which countries I had been to before I came to the U.S., what my blood type was, placed something beneath my tongue and took a bit of my blood. What he then said was that I wouldn’t be able to participate because I didn’t have enough iron in my blood. I couldn’t understand at first, but I soon did, and what came in my mind was relief. Relief that I won’t be having to stick a giant needle in my arm and take out what seemed like a liter of my blood. And then I realized, that if I had donated blood with that kind of thought in my mind, it wouldn’t qualify as doing any good on my part. It wouldn’t have been any different as to being dragged by someone and forced to give blood. As I started eating the bag of nuts people had given me before I left (for the sake of increasing the amount of iron in my blood), I promised myself that the next time I make a decision like this, I will be doing it with a more determined mind.

2. Career Exploration :: Basic Interviewing Techniques

I went to the Basic Interviewing Techniques workshop on the 29th of October. My personal thought was that I’d be more goofing around than actually learning something, but I found this workshop very useful. It was a preparation for my near future, for when I begin to find a job. Before the interview, we must research the corporation/organization, review our resume, practice answering potential interview questions and even prepare a list of questions for the employer. On the day of the interview, we must dress and adjust our attitude for success, and manage our time effectively. During the interview, we must follow the lead of the interview and determine the net step. Last but not least, after the interview, we must analyze the interview and follow up. There was even a student guide given to us, so it was even more helpful as we would be able to review and remember what we had learned. It was a great experience for me, but I only wish it hadn’t been so long.

3. Student Life :: Club Fair

This was the first workshop I had attended throughout my first semester. It was held in the gym at 24th of September, almost 2 months ago, and I remember how the large space was packed with people. I was able to learn what kind of clubs there were at Baruch, and even got free candies. I did find a lot of interesting clubs, but wasn’t able to join any of them for some reason. I promised myself that next year I’ll join at least two more clubs, other than KSA.

4. Arts at Baruch :: Einstein’s Dreams, the play.

For this workshop, I went to watch a play called Einstein’s Dreams on the 18th of November. This play was held in the Bernie West Theater in 23rd bldg. The play was based on a novel by Alan Lightman. I had no clue on how the play would be like in such a small theater, but the performers were so good, it didn’t matter how big the theater was. Each one of them had such powerful voices and performed with such full of energy. The play was about the relationship each human being has to time. It was a great play that made me filled with thoughts.

5. Personal Enrichment Workshop :: Vocat Review

This workshop was on the 17th of November, during our usual freshman seminar class. I had waken up late so I was so close to missing this class. When I arrived, the teacher had just logged out on her computer, but she turned it on for me again. It was embarrassing to watch how I had given the speech to the class, and I knew what the teacher was going to say (since the moment I finished giving the speech two weeks ago). I was always afraid of making eye-contact with my classmates whenever I gave a speech, which happened one time when I was in 10th grade. This speech was only my second speech. I learned that I had to practice at least 20 times at home, with a friend or by myself, until I became really comfortable with what I was talking about. Also, I learned that I didn’t necessarily have to make eye-contact with people, and that staring at the walls would do enough, as they wouldn’t know where I’m staring at. This workshop (although I don’t know whether it could be called as one) was the shortest workshop I attended, but a really helpful one. I just hope I’d be able to use what I had learned the next time I ever give a speech in public. 🙂

my #6 and my final workshop – Blood Drive!!

I never donate the blood in my life.  But when I think deeply about the blood drive. It is one way to save

people’s live by donating my own blood. So I made an appointment without hesitation.  So I went today, it was kind of easy to donate blood. Because all you have to do is fill out the form, and donate the blood. However, the needle was so big. I did not think about the needle part. So I was like…umm….oh…well…. Anyway I donated my blood and I am so happy about saving others’ life. It was a great experience in my life. Moreover, I am so happy that im done with the workshop!

Workshop #5 – Art at Baruch(12/01/09)

Before I went to gallery tour, I was surprised that Baruch college has its own gallery.

Although it was small, it has amazing pictures. When I went there, they had Mercedez matter’s art.

She was one of the most famous abstract painter. I think that is why her paint is so hard to understand meaning of ther paints. Even the guide explained about the paints, it was really hard to see what’s there and what does the paint represent.  but the tour was 15mins long and i think it wasnt enough time to understand. If I get another chances, i want to visit there once again to understand more.

Art at Baruch

In most art classes, students are required to find an artwork and discuss about it, and At at Baruch provides students chances to complete their assignments without going to the museums.  I attended the workshop “Art at Baruch” at the 22nd building at 1:00 p.m. Before attending this workshop, I never knew that Baruch College has its own art gallery. Most collections I saw during the workshop were landscape paintings and landscape photographs. Although I didn’t remember the details of each painting, most of them were amazing. They were not created by famous artists, but they are all special and unique. The workshop was short, but it was great for me to find out such nice place

Student Life-Club Fair

In order to fulfill my Student Life workshop, I went to the Club Fair. It was the biggest club fair I had participated. It took place in the ARC Main Gym. It was crowded in there, and I saw more than fifty different kinds of clubs. During this Club Fair, one club impressed me, and its name was Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). It was an organization that helps people to complete their tax return forms for free. However, not everyone can become a volunteer for income tax. Students must complete a few exams and several training courses before it. I found that this organization is pretty interesting and helpful, and decided to join it.

Feedbacks on Presentation

Like most students, I try to avoid any presentation. Unfortunately, one of the assignments for the Freshman Seminar was presentation. I gave me speech last month, and it was terrible. Finally, I got my feedbacks on the presentation from professor two weeks ago. She replayed my presentation video and discussed some problems with me. During our conversation, she gave me some useful suggestions and comments. She even recommended me to go to the SACC for help. She told me that biggest problem in my presentation is pronunciation, and SACC offers this help. Now, I am thinking to get help from the SACC; hopefully, my presentation skill will get better and better in the future.
