On November 12, I attended a workshop called “Basic interviewing techniques”. As the title states, this workshop is about how to prepare for an interviewing and to provide basic information that we, all freshmen, should know in order to be ready for our later success. I was bit late when I went there because I couldn’t find the room on the first floor. However, I still learned a lot from this worthwhile lesson, such as, before going to an interview, we should learn more about the company we are looking for because we should have a basic idea on what kind of person this company is willing to hire. Online research can do a good job on finding information about the companies. What surprises me the most is that the first impression can cause a decisive outcome. In this case, I learned that all males should get a nice haircut and a neat shave before an interview, and they should dress up in solid dark color suits. The speaker told us that she doesn’t like interviewees dressing up in black suits because it somehow looks like they are attending a funeral. Also, one of the tips to succeed in such an interview is to show interests by asking questions related to the previous key ideas. Over all, I would say that this workshop is very helpful because although I haven’t had any interview in my life so far, by attending this workshop, it gives me a general idea on what interviews are like, and most importantly, it helps me to understand what I can do to be successful when having a job opportunity.

Personal Enrichment – Oral Presentation

I found the oral presentation assignment to be an extrememly enlightning experience. I never realized how much is required for one to feel fully prepared to present a presentation. I think it is important that I work on many of the things that it did wrong during this assignment

Some of the things about my presentational skills that I feel that I can improve on are my body posture and talking louder. From watching the video I felt that I seemed to stiff. The most important part of improving my presentation skills would probably be to practice more before I need to present.

Career Exploration – Interview Skills

Basic Interview skills was an enlighting workshop because I learned a lot about the process that is gone through when you go into a job interview. There was a lot I did not know about the rigorous process. The instructer of the workshop also discussed abotu how to search for employement oppurtunities and the need to attend job fairs.

At the workshop one of the key points I got out of the presentation was that you have to be very professional when attending interviews. There was a lot I did not know about apperance-wise. It was good to have learned this because I would hate to have gone to a job interview unprepared.

Art at Baruch Workshop

On Tuesday October 6th, I attended one of the Baruch Art Gallery Exposition presentation, at the 22nd street building. During the tour we were presented several photographic pieces. Walking around looking at the artworks, I was very impressed and admiring; and I was thinking: “I never knew Baruch had such a thing”. It was amazing.

I was especially drawn to two photographs. One of them was Nudes in the City, NY, 1983. That photograph was gift from a man called Robert Stoner, to Baruch College. I liked this piece because I found it theme very unusual, so I fell for it uniqueness. The second photograph was Bamboo Grove Near Hangzhon Zhejiang, which was a gift to Baruch from Gerald and Selma Lotemberg. Standing in front of this piece and staring at this bamboo forest, I felt like projected in it. It was very amazing.

Art at Baruch

We spent about 20 minutes walking through the Art Gallery. Most collections are works of a lady, whose name is Mercedes. There have some of her early works, which were painted when she was very young. And the artworks shown the change when Mercedes from a child to a teenager, to an adult. Unfortunately, I don’t really like art, and I don’t understand much of art. So the workshop was not so interesting for me. One thing I remember was that Mercedes liked using triangles in her paintings.

Basic Interview Skills was the most helpful workshop that I attended. First, the presenter had a good skill to provide information clearly and interestingly. Because of her good presentation, the audiences were asking questions actively. The most important thing was that the information was very helpful. The workshop talked about every aspect about interview skills. I didn’t know about most of the skills before. In order to have a successful interview, you have to prepare a lot, including doing a good research about the company. Also, what we dress and how we dress is very important; interviewees should be dressing properly. The presenter talked about every details about the interview and I believe what I learnt from the workshop is very helpful for the future.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

After the oral presentation about a leader, we had the opportunity to review it. By reviewing the presentation, I knew that there were still too much to improve, in order to give an impressive speech. Together with Sue, I went over the speech, and found out that the organization of the speech was too bad. I thought probably because I was too nervous at that time and forgot what I should talk about. The most problem was pronunciation, which I have to deal with. This workshop was helpful.

Student Life

My third workshop was Club Fair. It was the first time to spend time during Club Hours. Walking around the ARC Main Gym, I saw many clubs there, some were popular, which surrounded by many students, and some were not. I was attracted by BnB, which stood for Billiards and Bowling, because the club’s purpose was to promote friendship and organize an environment that supports and motivate individuals. What’s more, I am interested in billiards. Finally I joined and signed up for its activity. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time when the club had the activity later. Besides the BnB, there were a lot of other attractive clubs there.

The second workshop was Changing America: Judge Sonia Sotomayor. The workshop was about a woman, who struggled from the Bronx to the Supreme Court. This workshop attracted many students too; there were not enough seats and some audiences were standing in the back. Absolutely different from the first workshop, this workshop talked a lot and provided much information. The three historians gave wonderful speeches and audiences were active. Basically, the speeches were about the changing, and referred to the concept of racism. That was a good workshop and it was presented successfully.

Academic Enrichment workshop

My first workshop was The Freshmen Reception. In that afternoon, there were so many students there. I think that the workshop must be the first workshop for most the students and we all took it seriously. Thus, everyone didn’t want to miss it. And there were so many students that we had to wait half a hour for the line. We didn’t have a lecture there; instead, we walked around to get some information about the causes and grade. I got a piece of paper about calculating GPA, and I found that it was not so easy to get high GPA. For some reasons, especially the number of attending students, I didn’t think the workshop was quite successful, but somehow, I learnt something about the causes there.
