workshop# 5 Basic Interview skills

” In order to get a job,you have to represent yourself well in an interview.” Someone once told me that. I think this is absolutely right. But how to do well in the interview? Two weeks ago,I went to workshop called baisc interview skills. I found this workshop very useful. The presentator told us things we should do and we should not do during an interview. We have to do some research about the company we apply before we attend the interview. That will increase our chance of getting the job. Doing research is not enough,we also need to know how to dress professionally. Dress appropriately can give the interviewers a good view of the interviewees. We have to maintain eye contact during the interview. In the end of the interview,a firm hand-shake is necessary. We can send thank-you letter to the interviewer.
I also learned how to manage anxiety. First of all,we need to be prepared. We can have a rehearsal with a friend. The school also provides a mock interview for students. We also need know how to relax.
All the materials I learned from the workshop gave me a hint of what to do and how to do for my future interviews.

workshop #4 Arts at Baruch

This is my first time to visit an art galley in school. I know Baruch is famous for its business academic achievements.I never know that it has some good artworks, too. The artist of the galley is named Mercedes. She was an impressionist. From the information preovided by the staff,I learned that Mercedes started painting when she was yound. Her artworks were inspired by Monet. I found the name “Monet” familiar. Later on,I realized that I have learned about Monet in my art history class. I was drawn to a painting with many different triangles. They are colorful. The artist depicted a movement of a table in between falling and not falling. The whole painting is dynamic to me, because the items on that table loo like they are sliding down. The audiences have to step away from the painting in order to understand the items on the tables.I could see an orange, an apple and some plates. The amazing thing is they are all in triangular shapes, but people can still tell what they are.
The workshop was about 20 minutes, but I learned a lot. THis workshop enriched my art knowledge.

Workshop: Library Basics

On September 17, 2009, I attended a workshop that was held by the library. The name of the workshop was Library Basics. It took place in the Baruch College: The William and Anita Newman Library at 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. It was a good workshop and the librarian provided us lots of useful information. From this workshop, I learned how to check out books, how to use the CUNY database, and how can I get help from the librarians. I also found out that I can talk to the librarians without coming to the school. I was glad to attend this workshop, because it was very useful. Because of this workshop, I began to use the CUNY database and I am very familiar with it, now.

workshop: Basic Interviewing Techniques

I attended the workshop: Basic Interviewing Techniques on November 12, 2009. The workshop took place in the multipurpose room of the Vertical Campus between 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p. m. I found that the workshop was very helpful. The guest speaker told me lots of information that I had never known before. First, she told us how to search companies’ histories, products, and services on the internet. Second, she taught us how to prepare for the interview. Last, she went over some basic strategies for interview. From this workshop, I also get to know more about the Starr office.  I was happy to have a chance to attend this workshop. I hope that more similar workshops will be hold in the future.

Personal Enrichment

My class and I had to do an oral presentation of a leader which we admired. Our speech was recorded on tape. Sue went over our speeches with us. My speech needed more organization, my eye contact and expressions were great, but I was all over the place. After watching it for myself, I realized what I had to improve on. This definitely is going to help us in the near future. Especially me, since I’m taking speech next semester!

Art Gallery

I attended the Art Gallery held in the 22nd building. It was full of beautiful art work from all over the country. Though, there were a couple of paintings that I wasn’t sure why they were worth so much. There was one which, no offense, looked like a child painted, and when I asked how much it was worth, our tour guide said “About $100,000”. I wanted to be an artist for a split second there! Since I’m currently taking art history, I recognized styles and authors of some paintings there, which I was very impressed. The line was very long but it was worth it in the end, we gained one of the best art experiences at Baruch.

Workshop #3(Student Life): Suicide Prevention WeekL The Truth About Suicide (film)

We watch flim about people who had family or friends that once tried to kill themselves. I learned that most of suicide are causing by drinking, anxiety, loneniness, and most importantly depression. Moreover, it is true for college students. As they go to college, they start to drink because they feel loneniness, because of new people. 9 out of 10 college suicide caused by depression and being isolated from people. However, those people don’t want to talk about their problem, because they feel kind of ashamed. If you have friends like that, try to talk to them and try to open thier mind. Because most of people see friend’s problem, they wait 1st time but 2nd time when they see, it is going to be too late. People always make that mistakes and regret it all the time. I think depression is also hard to cure, because if person physically hurts then visiting hosipital will be best choice, but if person have depression, there is nowhere to cure, it is not socially accepted. So my advice is to visit counseling center or visit professional person. It was great lesson, because these kinds of lesson cannot be learned in any classes.

Ehuang workshop 6 – Impression and Management

On November 5, 2009, I attended Impression and Management workshop from 1:00pm to 2pm at 3-160. The workshop has shown how jobs opportunities are mainly from connections. I also learn that making friends that would key to my success in future. It just amazes me how over 80% of the jobs are gain by connections and less than 10% are gain though the internet. The speaker had shown us much on how to give a good impression to friends and how to maintain the connection.

This workshop explains to me how most people get their jobs though connection. I learn many techniques on how to make friends and how to maintain it. This workshop did take me outside of my comfort zone because all this stuff is very new to me especially the part where jobs are gain though connections. This workshop passed my expectation by the information that was given to me. I would recommend this to another student because many people do not know that jobs are gain though connections.

Ehuang workshop 5 – Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape, The Nature of Photography

On October 6, 2009, I attended Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape, The Nature of Photography starting from 1:00pm at Mishkin. The workshop has shown me many different pictures about the landscape. I also learn that the artist use objects and techniques to created those landscapes without using the actual landscape. It just amazes me how they create landscapes by using objects like human bodies. The tour guide shown us much photography of landscapes that I would like to visit but cant.

This workshop explains to me how photographer can be creative and make their landscapes. I learn that there are many techniques for photographers to take pictures of unrealistic places. This workshop did not take me outside of my comfort zone because this is where I can always go to for drawing my own creative ideas. This workshop passed my expectation by the detail of how creative each photographer can be. I would recommend this to another student because not many people know how to be creative and unique.

Personal Enrichment with Prof. Sue

First of all, I felt kind of embarrassment, becauseI had to watch presentation that I did in front of the class.

However, as I watched the video with Professor, I learned that I did many things that I should not do during presentation, such as sat on the table looked at the paper all the time, instead of looking at people. Even I realized that it was horrible presentation.  I knew that it is going to be horrible, because I did not prepare well and I misunderstood the topic. Professor explained me about opportunities that I am going to have in 4 years. I realized how important that opportunities be and I have to be more serious about these opportunities because it might not come to me again. It was personal workshop, but it was also great lesson for me.
