I agree with the article which suggests that college graduates have poor communication skills. Students are now only able to communicate on their cell phones and computers and have a difficult time communicating in person. Communication is necessary to get ones point across. Whether it is in an interview or in a class discussion, students must be able to commuicate effectivly. No matter how brillant an idea one has, one has to be able to say what they feel in a professional manner. When nerves come into play, communication gets tough. The only way to improve this is by practicing. In class we talked about different techniques a good communicator uses. These include maintaining eye contact and using hand gestures. In this article, the interviewer comments how students “fumble their words at career fairs and are too shy.”
All of the advancements in technology may have originally had positive effects enabling people to communicate informally with others. However, now it is clear how formal communication has become weak. As the world advances we must not forgot basic skills. Texting on a cell phone will not get a person far in an interview for an accouting firm. However, it is the confidence, knowledge, and ability to get one’s point across that will.
