A lot of employers feel that in today’s technological times, college graduates are not preforming their communication skills in the workplace. Employers blame technology for this setback in the working place. Devices such as Blackberries, iPhones and text messaging has made it harder for people to communicate to others effectively.
I think that this is true, and I can personally relate to this. I rely greatly on technology to get into contact with my friends and family. I feel that text messaging is a lot easier than making a phone call or talking to someone face to face. This has caused my communication skills to become very weak.
I went for a job interview a few months ago, and I was unable to fully communicate myself with the interviewer. I felt that I was fully qualified for the job, but I was unable to express myself in words when I was being asked questions. I stuttered when I was asked questions, and I got nervous when a new question came up. I felt that if I was talking to the interviewer through technological means, I would have done a lot better. In conclusion, I have drilled myself to rely on technology too much and thus preventing me from being able to express myself to others. In the end, I did not get the job because of my poor communication skills.
