The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the era of Obama and Sotomayor 10/14

On October 14 after freshmen seminar I decided to attend this workshop because my History Professor, Fernandez was hosting the workshop. The workshop was held on the 14th floor something I didn’t even know existed till then. The workshop itself was packed forcing people to sit on the ground, and stand. Once the workshop started 4 Professors from the urban studies department talked about ethnicity, and racism by using charts, maps, and diagrams. What I found the most interesting was the location of all minorities, unemployment-rate, and income by ethnicity. Outside of the cities there were very few places minorities could be found. It made me realize that even though we may not see racism as a huge problem in New York City because it is so multicultural, but outside of the city racism could be rampant. The workshop addressed important issues that are still a problem in today’s world.

After each panelist spoke they took questions from the vast crowds and tried to answer their questions. The audience themselves was very respectful throughout the workshop, however due to the time of the workshop many people were leaving at different times. Overall the workshop was good, however I wasn’t enable to enjoy it as much due to a long day. The only things I would change about the workshop would be to schedule  it at an earlier time and make it a little bit shorter.
