Sacc Academic Workshop- October 15

I totally forgot about this one, so i am blogging now. i went to a workshop which tried to help students pass math. This was perfect for me, since i am having trouble in calculus. We were told to split the pages in our notebook into 2. This would keep our notes more organized and efficient. We were also told it is very important to try and study for an exam, from a couple of days ahead, and not the night before. They also told us that we could go to the Sac center for math tutoring, we would have to sign up from before, however it would be worth it.I recommend this workshop to all students at baruch, because without it, i wouldn’t have known where to go for help in math. It really helped me study better and although i didn’t do well on my exam, i really think the tips i got here were helpful!

Basic Interviewing Techniques

on November 12 i went to a career exploration workshop. There was a very nice speaker from the career development she also used to work as HR in a firm. she was telling us all about what we should prepare for the interview.  She also recommended us to come to their room if we going to have an interview. She also said that they have business attire to loan for an interview. Also she gives us all the tips on the how to prepare for interview. And how to send a thank you letter after the interview by email and by mail. Also if you had different people interviewing you that send different thank you notes. Because they email each other and check if it’s the same. Also she recommended if they say they will call by that day and they didn’t than call them, because they probably checking if you were listening for the day and if you don’t call than they wont hire you.

Career Workshop: Resume writing

Today I went to the career exploration workshop on how to write a resume. The first 15 minutes they were trying to get the projector and laptop to work. I was a little bit unhappy by the lack of earlier preparation. The lecturer decided to just recite the information to us. She seemed very rehearsed so I felt as if someone was reading something to me. This didn’t make her feel too happy so she had a bit of an attitude. Back to the main things that were said though, she told us the format of a traditional resume. At the top of the page we should BOLD our names, have an address, contact information (phone and email), and an optional: Objective. She said that the objective should be one sentence and it is recommended that we use it during an event like the club fair. Ex/ Seeking a full-time/part-time job position in the field of X. I was taught previously that the objective should  be a few words, not a sentence. I guess since its a highly optional part of the resume, everyone has their own way of writing it. She went on to speaking about education and how since we are freshman now, everything we’ve done in the past during our high school years is gone. This means that we really have to juice up our resume by being active on campus or off campus now. Not only is it good for the resume, its good for personal growth at this time since we are new to college life. So under education we would write our expected year of graduation, our GPA (overall or major which must be above 3.0; whichever is better, you put it down.), and if the GPA isn’t so high, don’t round the number; write whether you are a full-time/part-time student with a job at the moment. By doing this the employer has a better understanding of why your GPA is the way that it is. After education, we should put down language and computer knowledge levels. If you are proficient in other languages then you should write which ones they are and whether you are knowledgeable, conversational, or fluent in it. Same with computers, if you are knowledgeable or proficient in excel, word, and other common programs. Lastly, an optional section you could put is your references. This would be contact information from people who really know you that aren’t related to you closely. This would mean past employers as well as teachers or peer mentors.

Enough with what needs to be on the resume, how should you put it down on the paper? There can only be one resume sheet of paper. On that paper all margins need to be 1 inch from the border. Everything needs to be written in outline/ bullet format. Each bullet should start with a verb. Make sure those verbs are past or present tense depending on if you’re still doing what you’re doing. One thing that she didn’t mention is that the NAME, ADDRESS, CONTACT INFO, OBJECTIVE should be centered.

Over the summer I was part of a internship training and doing program where they taught me how to write my resume. I’m glad I had some prior experience before I came to this workshop because it gave me a better understanding of what was being said. When the lady would complain about the amount of people who were actually here, I think it was because of her just spewing out information to us. It would have been better if she improvised and wrote down an example of what she meant on the board. In addition to that, I got to compare between the two resume writing sessions. In my previous resume writing workshop we had many different types of ways to write resumes. The way that she talked about is the traditional method. It is good for her to go over this method because most of us will probably start seeking internships after we’ve done more extracurricular activities. However, another way to sell ourselves on paper even though we are less experienced is writing a resume more geared at you interests, your character, and activities that you’ve done. I found this different type of resume more suitable for freshmans seeking jobs at the moment. Another difference in the traditional method that I was taught today is that she committed the extracurricular activities/ interests that we pursue. I find this element in the resume one of the most important because it shows that you’re not just the studious student or hard worker. It shows that you are a person too.

So to conclude my long blog: (I haven’t done this in a while so I have a lot to say that is good for you to read.)

I realized that having a resume at hand is growing more and more important. Its very important to have one with you and to update it before you show it to an employer. If you find big passages fearful, please just keep in mind these few points below:

  • Go to the STARR Career Development website and activate your STARR search account for internship opportunities and training.
  • The computer lab on the 6th floor of the Newman building offers free resume printing by the print stations. (Yes, resumes are printed on their own special papers.)
  • Go to the STARR Career Development website to see samples of how to write your resume.
  • Sometimes a cover letter is necessary so check the website for more information.
  • Thank you letters after an interview should be sent within 24 hours (usually done by email.)

Now I hope to write as much as I did for this blog and as fast as I did for this blog for my philosophy paper. Wish me luck! Bye~

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter

I went to a Gallery Tour on 135 east 22nd street and looked at many works from an artist Mercedes. She draws abstract art and impressions and some of her paintings were very appealing. One of these paintings that struck out the most to me was Still Life with Skulls.  This painting was drawn with only charcoal and at first you might see only a bunch of shapes put together, but you can see pieces of skulls and the faces of it too. I like her art because it isn’t drawn with detail but is drawn like a blur, as if you’re not wearing glasses and your eyesight is vague.  I think those kind of works are harder than drawing something with detail. Overall i enjoyed the tour and maybe ill visit again when i have the chance.

Enrichment Workshop: SACC-Everything you need to know to pass Calculus

This was the only workshop that I attended where I was actually hoping to learn something because Calculus is something I needed help in. My speaker was a tutor at the SACC center who tutors students in Calculus as well as Pre-Calculus. He was somewhat hard to understand but gave a lot of tips that came in handy for me in my Calculus class. He advised us that doing every single homework is really important, as well as taking good notes, and attending the SACC center regularly if you’re having trouble with the material at any time. I learned a lot from this workshop and enjoyed being there because it taught me the best way to do good in Calculus and it wasn’t crowded at all making it even easier to pay attention and remember the important tips.

Managinging Relationships Workshop

I went to the Managing Relationships Workshop on October 8. It was put together very well with Power Point presentations and group-works. The people who organized this workshop put in a lot of time and effort into it. What I found amusing though is how these workshops try to help us students with relationships. I personally know how to manage my relationships with family, friends, and my girlfriend. I think it is not necessary to educate us about this sort of thing because we are all people who interact with each other on a daily basis and find our own ways of communicating and managing our relationships. As I have said in class many times, it is wrong to force us to explore this side of ourselves. Maybe it was helpful for some and helped them discover certain techniques, but I think that isn’t the case.

The Changing Nature of Race, Power, and Ethnicity in the Era of Obama and Sotomayor: Global Awareness

I was informed of this workshop by my history teacher who was a speaker/ host at the workshop. For about an hour and a half a group of speakers spoke about culture and ethnic backgrounds in America. They talked about how important it is to be aware of the different ethnicitys found in the US, most specifically Hispanic. It was a extremely informative and entertaining workshop because of the way it was presented. The speakers used powerpoint presentations with charts and many slides to back up their views and ideas. All of the statistics that were displayed were really interesting and taught me quite a few things I wasn’t aware of. The workshop informed me about the hispanic culture and how it is viewed by many in the world.

Enrichment Workshop: Club Fair

The Club Fair workshop was extremely crowded as far as I remember. Every single freshman in the entire school tried to go into the gym at the same time. I waited in the line to swipe your id card for about 30 minutes before I was even able to enter the gym area. Besides the fact that it was way too crowded there, it was quite enjoyable with the massive amounts of information made accessible by the tables set up by different clubs. There was a lot of good candy set up at the tables and lots of balloons and banners. I didn’t waste my time getting informations from any of the clubs because I’m not too interested in joining a club this year. If this workshop wasn’t as crowded, I think more people would be able to go to every table and actually find a club they are interested in.

Global Awareness Workshop

I mostly wanted to attend this workshop because of the extra credit that I would receive for my history test. As the workshop went along, it got really interesting. Several speakers talked about race and the way that race affect everything. The workshop seemed to drag on a bit, but it really made me think a lot. We normally think of race ass just racism, or something like that. But this workshop went in depth about the patterns of race, and told us where race was going. I really enjoyed this workshop (and the extra 20 points I got on my test.)

Career Exploration

I attended that basic interviewing skills workshop, and I was a little bit skeptical. I don’t normally like these kinds of career exploration things because it always seems that they try to impose their ideas onto me. But this one was different. I actually walked away with a good amount of knowledge. They told us things that most people already know, like how you have to dress and all of that. But, they also told us that we should look into the history of the company and all of that. One thing that I wanted to find out but didn’t was why most companies that I try to apply for want me to apply online. I really don’t like that because that  doesn’t really let me stand apart from everybody else. But when I do apply to a bigger company, I’ll keep everything i learned at heart.
