Arts at Baruch

When I attended this workshop, I thought that it would be just another generic workshop, but I was wrong. I went to the Mishkin Art Gallery and was really surprised that a nice place like that was available for me to be in. The art was really interesting. I never really enjoyed art, but I looked at it differently during this tour. I really enjoyed the tour and im really happy that I went. The tour was about an hour, which wasn’t bad. Ill definitely be visiting another art gallery soon.

Student Life: Helpline

For my Student Life workshop, I attended the informational session conducted by Helpline. Helpline is a health and wellness peer counseling program. During the informational session, we received pamphlets on nutrition.
The pamphlet was very informative as it taught me how I can get regular exercises from everyday activities. For example, instead of taking the elevator, I can take the stairs instead or getting off the train a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way home. These are very simple things that I can do in my daily routine that can help make me healthier.
The pamphlet also taught us how to read nutrition facts. It had a very informative sample of a nutrition fact label from a Mac & Cheese box. The pamphlet also taught me about portioning my meals, which I find very helpful.

Academic Enrichment

I liked this workshop a lot. While attending it, they gave us a lot of tips about our math class and of the math tutoring that is available. Although that doesn’t apply to me anymore because my math class killed me and I’m no longer in it, I’ll definitely take all of the advice to heart and I will be sure to get a math tutor next time. This is one thing i really like about Baruch, they truly give us every last opportunity to pass.

Race and ethnicity workshop

I went to this workshop in October. The workshop was organized very nicely with four speakers and a chairman that organized them all. The topic did not interest me very much, but I was amazed to see how this workshop was progressing. Four speakers spoke about four aspects of race and racism in America and the effects that it has had on society. After all the topics were covered, it was nice to see so many interesting reactions by the students . The students and the speakers then engaged in a full blown conversation regarding the topic. This interested me and I enjoyed listening to all of the arguments made. What I learned from this workshop was that this school does create good extra-curricular learning enviroments for its students.

Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes

Today I attended a Personal Enrichment workshop that talked about conflicts that you might encounter at Baruch. We talked about Elevator problems, library printing, faculty, etc. The list goes on and on. Basically we learned that there is a staff called Ombuds. This group helps us resolve the anger or other feelings during the conflict and tries their best to help us resolve the conflict. Personally the fact that there is a staff willing to do this really alarmed me and eased me at the same time. I’m glad that if i encounter any problems or dilemmas i know that there is a Baruch staff that is right there to put me back on my feet.

Personal Enrichment: Your Life Your Money

On Novemeber 11th, I attended my last workshop which was a screening of Your Life, Your Money. This was definitely the best workshop out of all of them. First of all, there was free pizza and cookies and I got a flash drive. Also, at the end they gave everyone their own screeening of Your Life, Your Money. Your Life, Your Money was about how to manage credit cards, avoid debt and how to pay off student loans corretly. It emphasized the importance of a good credit score. I thought it was interesting how they showed personal stories of people who suffered with a lot of debt and how they saved themselves and their future. One of the women who was in the screening was at this workshop to speak. After the screening there were three panalists and they answered questions relating to managing money. Although attending this workshop forced me to stay at school until 8, it was definitely worth it. =) Yey my last blog.

Enrichment Workshop: Managing Relationships

I went to the Managing Relations enrichment workshop on October 8th. I really liked how organized this workshop was. It had not only one, but two powerpoint presentations, one on each side of the room. It was held in a huge room unlike the other small rooms that were used for enrichment workshops. We were split up into groups of three people and forced to talk about the different kinds of relationships that a college student faces. We talked about relationships with family, with friends, and with a significant other and how we manage our time. The people at the workshop also encouraged us to meet new people in Baruch and made us participate in activities to get to know one another. They made us go across the room and talk to someone new. I found this workshop to be really useful because most college students aren’t left with a lot of time for out-of-school relationships after they are done with studying and writing papers. The workshop made it easier for students to manage their relationship outside of school as well as any relationships they may have already formed in school. I liked how organized this workshop was and how hard the people who organized tried to enrich us.

Mercedes Matter: Arts Workshop

I attended this art workshop on November 3rd. It was in the Mishkin building which took me about half an hour to find. The tour group I was in ended up to be packed because of all the latecomers that were in my group. Nonetheless, I found Mercedes’ paintings to be quite interesting. It was a short workshop but was very informative and I learned a lot of new things about art. I found it extremely useful for someone like myself who would rarely take time out on my own to visit a museum. There were a lot of abstract paintings as well as many still lifes. It showed how abstract paintings were used to show things that a camera picture wouldn’t ordinarily show. Mercedes’ paintings were very fun to look at and attention-grabbing. Overall, the tour was a good idea for a workshop because it was quick, informative, and got straight to the point for many college students like myself who aren’t very interested in art.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

I forgot to blog this one, anyway, on October 15th, i attended a workshop called, “Everything you need to know to pass Math”. It was held by the Sacc center in room 3-215. The speakers gave us studying tips, and informed us of the available math tutors, which was good, considering so many people are dropping out of my calculus class. There was a small amount of people in the room which was also good. I was also able to grab a packet with a sample math final to practice. They also had manuals on how to use our crazy calculator. Im fairly good at math and can handle myself, but i still thought the workshop was informative and useful. Its good to know that there are tutors for free.

Student Life: Helpline: Health & Wellness Peer Counseling

On November 5th, 2009 I attended Helpline in place of Student Life Workshop, which was approved by Renee. This workshop was taking place in the lobby on the second floor of vertical campus building at 12:30 PM. This workshop was about nutritional facts since it was regarding health and wellness. We received some tips for getting regular exercise to stay at a healthy weight. Also we were informed how to read and understand Nutrition Facts label on various food package. We also discussed how to size up and measure our portions of food. I was taught how to estimate our portion size without measuring cups of food scales. I also had brief introduction on Helpline. Helpline is a health and wellness peer counseling program offered to Baruch college students. It offers confidential one on one assistance as well. The helpline room is located at VC 3-241. This workshop was very interesting and helpful because I did not know how to size up my portion before with scales or measurements. Also I received great tips to stay fit and healthy. It was very helpful to know that there is such counseling program for Baruch Students.
