Art Gallery Workshop

The art workshop I went to was an exhibition entitled, “Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective”. It was basically a gallery filled with modern art paintings. The paintings were very colorful and eye-catching, but I didn’t understand them. The tour guide explained that there were hidden images within the painting that would be noticeable if analyzed carefully. There was one painting with vibrant colors drawn in random places and didn’t look like anything recognizable, but she explained that if I looked carefully, I would be able to see tables and fruits. It was an interesting approach to interpret it and I guess I learned to understand modern art better.

This blog reminds me of the modern art piece I chose for my art history essay. The painting was called Broadway Boogie Woogie painted by Piet Mondrian. His philosophy on painting was all about simplifying figures to geometric shapes beyond the conventions of Picasso’s cubism and to rid of the subject. In the painting, he uses squares of the color red, blue, yellow, and gray to represent the vitality of New York City. So pretty much, the first time you see it, it looks like the TV screen when your Super Nintendo malfunctions. But the more you look into it, your imagination runs wild with different themes that the painting may have. I’m going to the exhibit tomorrow so I’m looking forward to seeing the art piece that you were talking about, if it is still on display.
