Personal enrichment

For the personal enrichment workshop, there was only one remaining workshop that i was able to attend so i went. i was not really looking forward to this workshop, it was called stress and anxiety reduction. but i was glad i chose to attend this workshop because although they didn’t neccessarily teach me anything of much importance, it made me feel better. they showed us many ways to relax and relieve stress when we need to but i don’t feel comfortable with those methods much and i don’t think i will be using any of them in the near future but they did have a meditation moment with very relaxing and smoothing music where we were to just sit back comfortably and rest. that rest helped me take away all teh tension i had from earlier that day and i went to my next class refreshed. it was a great feeling.

Club Fair

At the beginning of this semester, on september there was a club fair that i attended. i saw many interesting clubs that i wanted to take part in but wouldn’t have the time too take part in all of them. i was especially interested in the archery club and ballroom dancing. i took ballroom dancing when i was in elementary school and i loved it. i contemplated giving it another try but thought the best of it. at the club fair there were A LOT of food and refreshments placed out by the various clubs and some clubs placed out all kinds of cultural foods and activities that intrigued me. the club fair was a great experience, i was able to understand and fully see and experience for myself the diversity of Baruch college.

Philly Trip

This was a overnight freshman trip to the “City of brotherly love” (Philadelphia). The trip was postponed from its original date and original number of 200 students. There was about 40 student who went this time and the experience was worth it. The trip was for us city kids to have a feel of what dorm life would be like and to get to know other freshmans. We had a coach bus, share a hotel room with two beds with another person (you can pick the person), and got to go sight seeing in philly. There were fun activities and good food. The philly cheese-stakes were the best! I will definitely keep up with any other trips they are planning 🙂

Job Fair

This was a workshop where two Verison guys came and educated us into going out and applying for jobs regardless of experience. They were very energetic and enthusiastic. They talked about their personal accomplishments and how they both started at the very bottom regardless of experience. Personally I was motivated into applying for jobs with big companies such as Verison. They informed us in how to be successful, such as having a resume, looking professional, establishing relationships and connections, and what to do during an interview. They also gave out stress balls, pens and knowledge.

Broadway Hair!

Last Friday, our LC went to see the Broadway Hair. It was a very good show and we learned a lot about the people during that time. We became aware of the community during the 60’s and how difficult it must be to live during a time of drafting. We also learned about the hippie community, and what kind of people they really were. The Global awareness that was presented was about the drafting of all the men, and how they were forced to go to war. Everyone was brave enough to fight for what they believed in, in the show, by burning their draft cards, except for Claude. As a result, Claude died for something he didn’t believe in. So, this show depicted a lot of awareness both from their community and globally.

Hair on Broadway

The musical Hair was about the counter culture of the 1960s. I went to go see it last Friday night with my learning community. The musical also focused on the Vietnam War with some members of the cast burning draft cards. The main character Claude did not burn his card and got sent off to war. This relates to global awareness because the characters are anti-war and involved in protests. They were aware of the men being forced to fight in the jungles of Vietnam and that their friends could easily be drafted.

Suicide Awareness Film

I watched a movie dedicated to suicide awareness on November 19. I really felt this workshop had a purpose. It had people talking about either being suicidal or knowing someone who is. I personally can relate to the people who know someone who suffers from depression to the point where they are suicidal. It expressed the emotions perfectly and helped everyone understand why people are the way they are. Also, I got into a slight disagreement with a student. Because I know someone who had tried to committ suicide, I felt offended by his comments because they were ignorant and inaccurate so, I voiced my opinion and defuted his argument. Overall, I thought this workshop was necessary especially for college students suffering from stress.

Club Fair

I attended the club fair in the gym on September 25. I’m blogging so late about this workshop because I didn’t know it counted as a workshop. I really enjoyed this event because it had a lot of liveliness to it. There were students everywhere, music playing, and really created booths. I found interest in the Latin Ballroom Dancing club. Unfortunately, I did not join because as a freshman, I want to get more comfortable in college but then I plan on joining. Also, I met a group of people there that I am now friends with =]. Altogether, I liked the club fair a lot.

Gallery Tour

I attended a gallery tour on November 17th at 1:00-2:00. Although the workshop was supposed to be an hour, we waited in line for 45 minutes and then only looked at the paintings for 15 minutes. It was extremely hot inside the gallery and out. The artist was Sydney, M. her paintings were very colorufl bbut other than that nothing really appealed to me.

Freshman Reception

On September 17, I attended my first workshop called Freshman Reception. I found this workshop extremely disorganized and useless. The host admitted to being unprepared for the amount of students that attended and therefore didn’t really provide a presentation or enough handouts. We were there for about 15 minutes and then she just signed our papers and dismissed us.
