Basic Interviewing Techniques

In this workshop, I learned interview strategies that help increase your chances of being hired. I learned that for an interview, we have to bring a resume, dress professionally, have a personal pitch, and prepare yourself for the upcoming questions. After the interview, we should write a thank you letter to the interviewer and restate some of your important accomplishments, skills, and qualifications you possess that make you good for the job position.

Impression Management Workshop

On Nov. 5 I attended the Impression Management workshop. This workshop was about how to present yourself in the work environment and how it’s very important to be aware of your body language. The speaker said that when you first meet someone, you judge them by what they’re wearing. He said that is the reason why students looking for jobs dress up professionally when people from companies come to Baruch to meet and interview them. Not only do you have to think and dress professionally, but you have to act professionally. The speaker said that it’s important to speak clearly and loudly. He said that if your shy, you should start practicing talking in front of your friends and family because speaking publicly is something that you’re going to be doing in the future. The speaker also said that the people that are shy should get a mentor so that they can have someone to talk to or evaluate them on their speeches and their progress. I felt that overall these were things that I already knew about how to present myself. Also there were many bullets on the slide show that he was showing so it was kind of hard to read all the sentences and pay attention to what he was saying at the same time.

Bearcat: The Other Google Workshop

On Oct. 20 I went to the Bearcat: The Other Google workshop held in the library. The librarian told us that even though Google is a useful search engine, Baruch has an even more effective search engine to offer exclusively to its Baruch students. The librarian told us about the Bearcat Baruch databases and how it is based on reliable sources. He said the information that we get from using Google might not always be accurate or related to the topic that we were searching for. Then he taught us about the Baruch databases and how if we type in key words and select a subject that it falls into, we will get definite results. I can see myself using the Baruch databases in the future when I have research papers due. Overall I thought this workshop was helpful because I had never heard of the Baruch databases before and the workshop wasn’t crowded, making it easy for us to listen to the librarian explaining how to use the search engine.

Nature of Landscape/Nature of Photography Workshop

On Oct. 13 I went to the Nature of Landscape/Nature of Photography workshop. The photographs in the gallery consisted of different views of various landscapes. The photographs were taken in a way to show the photographers view of nature. It was interesting to me because the photographers took the photographs from different views and angles. They also developed the photographs differently making every photograph in the art gallery different from another photographers photos. Two of my favorite photographs were by Marilyn Bridges in Peru, Machu Picchu Among the Peaks of the Andes and Overview Nazca. I liked these two photos a lot because firstly I’m half Peruvian and second, the way that the photographer captures the view is breathtaking. Bridges took these pictures from her plane giving it a bird’s eye view. The different lights and shadows that Bridges was able to capture  in the photographs makes the viewer feel as if they were right there with her when she was taking the picture.

Gallery Tour

I went to the mercedes matter: a retrospective gallery tour on tuesday. i enjoyed it because the place was really nice and i used to major in art at a arts academy in JHS and it gave me a bit of a nostalgic feel when i went there. it has been an extremely long time since the last time i went to an art gallery where i can quietly enjoy the pieces of work on my own.  this experience at the gallery brought back many memories. after 3 years of art and art history and etc. in JHS, my pleasure for art withered away, but being away for it for so long since then has brought me back great fulfillment as i look at them.

Databases

I had recently went to the workshops on Databases.  it was very useful but I felt as if they were unprepared for the amount of people that had showed up.  There wasn’t enough room to sit and standing for half an hour was tiresome.  The databases, as of now, are not much of use to me but I know that later on in further classes they would be of great use.  The librarian who conducted the workshop was very lively and interesting so the workshop didn’t seem too boring nor did it seem too prolonged.  However they had provided me with vital information that will be of great use to me in the near future.

Last Workshop

I went to the Career Planning: Resume Writing workshop today. It was very informative. I got a packet on learning how to write a resume and a cover sheet; there was also suggestions for appropriate words to use in a resume. The presenter also suggested going to the STARR Career Development Center to review our resumes and other things. After going through the packet, we had to fill out an evaluation on the workshop; I gave it a 4 out of 5. Overall, the workshop was very organized and I better understand how to write a resume and a cover sheet.

Gallery Tour

At the tour, a lady showed us  different paintings that involved nature. Each painting showed how each photographer viewed nature differently. She explained how the paintings are different from one another and allowed us to explore the gallery ourselves. The tour wasn’t packed and it only took 15 minutes, but we had to wait  for a long time for our turn to be up.

Managing Relationships

The workshop had a psychologist speak to us about how to manage relationships with friends, family, and lover. She told us that college is the moment where we decide if we will be social or alone. She explained meeting people is important because networking will help us with jobs. It was interesting and helpful.
