Personal Enrichment Workshop: Building and Managing Relationships In College

Date: October 8, 2009

Time: 12:45-2:00PM

Location: VC – Multipurpose Room

The Managing Relationships workshop aimed to focus on guiding students on how to handle the changes and hardships the relationship they have with their family, friends, and loved ones go through. The workshops aimed to provide students with advice on keeping these relationships strong and less stressful to handle. The workshop wants students to be able to learn how to balance the hectic life of college with social and love life.

I selected this particular workshop, because I personally am having a difficult time balancing my relationships outside school. I have very, very close friends who are also bombarded with college work, and it doesn’t help the fact that they are away in another school or just simply unreachable. The friends that are near me and  are easily able to reach me tends to get disappointed when I don’t return their calls or when I cancel out on seeing them because of the work I must catch up on in school. So, these particular relationships are strained because of long distance and bad timing. My close-knit family also gets disappointed when I don’t join in the dinner table because of the work I’m bound to doing at the moment. I attended this workshop to learn a few guidelines in fixing these relationship and distance problem.

The workshop did take me outside my comfort zone because the speaker asked the students to “mingle” and “socialize” by going up to a random student we don’t know. Each of us had to do it b going across the room and introducing our names and one little fact about us. This took me outside my comfort zone because I am particularly shy when it comes to meeting new people and introducing myself. But I got through it in the end as it turns out to be quite entertaining.

His workshop met my expectations because the speaker did provided very good advice on how to manage relationships (hence the title), especially those that are strained by distance or college life. Therefore, I would definitely recommend this workshop to another student, even if he or she doesn’t have the same problems as I did, but to just learn guidelines about keeping a relationship strong.

I learned that it’s not entirely impossible to have a social life outside college during freshman year when most of us, students are adjusting to the work load and the new environment. That was certainly something I did not expect to be possible. I learned to fix those relationship problems with my family and close friends.
