Arts at Baruch workshop

Title of workshop: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

Category: Arts at Baruch

Time/Date:  November 17th, 2009/ 1-2pm

Okay!  So. . . Tuesday was pretty crazy.  A couple of us wanted to get our workshops over with so we tried doing two workshops in one afternoon; it ended up working out!  We were standing in line at the Mishkin Gallery, waiting to get in.  Apparently, everybody else was trying to finish up their workshops too because this line was long.  So Diana and I had to leave and go do our community service.  But it ended up that the gallery was still open so we ran over there.

The gallery was pretty cool.  It showed the art Matter’s painted from throughout her lifetime; the earliest was from age nine.  Her art for the most part was really abstract.  Later on, they had more color.  I think it was because of the invention of the camera.  Not sure.  Turns out Matter’s was a pretty important artist in New York City during the 40’s and 50’s.

This was the first time I’ve been to an art gallery so it was a new experience for me.  I don’t think I appreciated the art very much.  I didn’t understand what was so great about some of the pieces or what she was trying to express.  As you can see, I’m not very knowledgeable in this area.
