Academic Enrichment: Freshmen Reception

Date: September 17, 2009
Time: 12:30-2:00 PM
Room: Center of Academic Advisement

After standing in a crowded line for about thirty minutes, I along with a few other freshmen finally entered a room where the Freshman Reception was forced to be held. The advisors said that they were very shocked at the large amount of freshmen who came for the reception. There were more than a thousand of us, if I can remember, and they were only used to about a hundred freshmen visitors.

The workshop aims to give us more information about how we can take advantage of the Academic Advisement Center. The advisors at this center briefly told their roles as to how they can help us, freshmen decide our majors and/or minors, and the classes we should take in able to fulfill a certain requirement for a major. For example, I am interested in apply later on to Zicklin School of Business, the advisor mentioned the criteria that the school looks for, such as the GPA, the classes required, etc….

I chose this particular workshop mostly because a lot of the people in our LC group decided to go here to achieve one of the required enrichment workshops. I also am quite lost when it comes to figuring out my major and the requirements that come along with it. This workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone because it was very brief. It lasted merely an hour.

From my experience, I learned to take advantage of the Academic Advisement Center in able to answer the many, many questions I have regarding next semester, the next year, and my major (which I still haven’t clearly figured out.) Nothing really surprised me about what I learned from this workshop, except for the fact that I thought I could’ve learned more from the advisors.

This workshop, in all honesty, quite failed my expectations a bit. I expected the advisors to be prepared for our arrival. I do understand that the huge number they received was overwhelming….but I did want those cookies! I also expected the advisors to go more into detail, as suppose to giving us a very short general idea about what we should expect to do as freshmen. But then again, I am planning on making an appointment, so that should answer most of my questions. But all in all, I will recommend this to another student so that he or she can meet the requirements for freshman seminar and to answer some of his or her basic questions as a freshman.
