Workshop

“The Freshman Reception”

Student Life

Sept 17/12:30 – 2:30

The point of this workshop was to introduce us to the Academic Advisement center.   They reminded us of the requirements Baruch has about majors, minors, three different schools, ect.  This workshop didn’t really take me out of my comfort zone.  I guess cause it was about academics and it’s pretty straightforward.  We didn’t really get to do much.  The staff was overwhelmed by the amount of people that were there, so a lot of time was wasted trying to figure out where to put all the students.  I would recommend this workshop if you really don’t know anything about the academics at Baruch.  It’s good that I now know where the academic advisement center is located.  I think they’d be very helpful if i ever have a question.

First Post, How Exciting!

Hello Everyone,

I went to the club fair today. I’m seriously considering the movie makers club; it seems like a lot of fun. I also appreciated the thai iced tea courtesy of a friendly asian club. I missed the art fair =(. I’ll attend the next one. I’m not sure if we’re supposed to blog about each event, but I really don’t have much to say about the academic enrichment freshman oreintation m’bob except for it was crowded and they didn’t give us the cookies they promised us. Well, talk to you guys soon.

Anthony’s blog on the club fair…

So today I attended the club fair with some of our LC and at first I just wanted to go to get the sheet signed.  As I was there I became very interested in studying abroad/working abroad.   I talked with the president of the AIESEC for about 10 minutes about her experoence and about other little details about it.  It seems very interesting and I will be attending another meeting on it Thursday, Ocober 15th..even though we have our anthropology mid term that day which I am going to fail.  Only three nore workshops to attend. And in the words of Alton Brown, until next time..I beg you good eats.

Anthony’s blog on the art show…

Most of our LC Group went to exhibit the art show today. At first it seemed like it would be extremely boring and a very long waste of time, but it turned out to be alright. Some of the art was actually interesting which took me by surprise. I wish the director of the Art Gallery had more enthusiasm because it seemed like she was that of a record player repeated the same thing again in an annoying, yet boring voice. Many of the photographs were of nature and the way things look from different perspectives. Well this is my first blog so I hope it went okay!

Updates for Community Service and Workshops

  • Please check your email in regards to community service.
  • Please note that workshops that fulfill the Student Life requirement such as the Club Fair or the Student Services Department fair sponsored by the Center for Academic Advisement MUST have me accompany you to sign off on their passports. These activities are too large and congested to have one or two PMs(Peer Mentors) monitoring the attendance.

With regard to this, I will first want you to blog about it if they did not sign your passports and then it will be clear to me to you actually did attend the workshops. Then I will sign your passports.

  • Also please note that if you are attending a Career Development Workshop that they must be dressed in business attire.  They will not be allowed in unless they are dressed for the occasion.

Business Attire means in a suit.

Obtain business attire. Don’t wait until the last minute! Buy or borrow a business suit: Blue or gray skirt suit with simple white/cream blouse for women; black or blue or charcoal grey suit with white shirt and conservative tie for men. In addition to wearing a suit, wear appropriate but comfortable shoes. Check your appearance for neatness. No excessive jewelry, accessories, fragrances or odors.- Courtesy of STARR Career Development Center

Academic Enrichment: Freshmen Reception

Date: September 17, 2009
Time: 12:30-2:00 PM
Room: Center of Academic Advisement

After standing in a crowded line for about thirty minutes, I along with a few other freshmen finally entered a room where the Freshman Reception was forced to be held. The advisors said that they were very shocked at the large amount of freshmen who came for the reception. There were more than a thousand of us, if I can remember, and they were only used to about a hundred freshmen visitors.

The workshop aims to give us more information about how we can take advantage of the Academic Advisement Center. The advisors at this center briefly told their roles as to how they can help us, freshmen decide our majors and/or minors, and the classes we should take in able to fulfill a certain requirement for a major. For example, I am interested in apply later on to Zicklin School of Business, the advisor mentioned the criteria that the school looks for, such as the GPA, the classes required, etc….

I chose this particular workshop mostly because a lot of the people in our LC group decided to go here to achieve one of the required enrichment workshops. I also am quite lost when it comes to figuring out my major and the requirements that come along with it. This workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone because it was very brief. It lasted merely an hour.

From my experience, I learned to take advantage of the Academic Advisement Center in able to answer the many, many questions I have regarding next semester, the next year, and my major (which I still haven’t clearly figured out.) Nothing really surprised me about what I learned from this workshop, except for the fact that I thought I could’ve learned more from the advisors.

This workshop, in all honesty, quite failed my expectations a bit. I expected the advisors to be prepared for our arrival. I do understand that the huge number they received was overwhelming….but I did want those cookies! I also expected the advisors to go more into detail, as suppose to giving us a very short general idea about what we should expect to do as freshmen. But then again, I am planning on making an appointment, so that should answer most of my questions. But all in all, I will recommend this to another student so that he or she can meet the requirements for freshman seminar and to answer some of his or her basic questions as a freshman.

Workshop

Yeah I know I’m kind of late on blogging but like college has been so time consuming! Everytime I finish one thing I realize there are like 2 more things to do and honestly I put blogging as my lowest priority. Anyway I went to a workshop like a week ago. It was last Thursday during the 2 hour break that I think all of our LC went to this Student life enrichment workshop. Supposedly we were there to learn about the center for academic advisement but in reality I didn’t learn anything. Everything was just a big confusion. It was like a huge mass of freshmen waiting and then when we were finally let in the speakers were all in a rush and in such amazement of ‘the outcome in attendance’. And on top of that there were no cookies. Oh well I guess right.

Well that’s all I can write for now. I just wrote this real quick before i start on my 3 math assignments.

ughh being college is hard 🙁

The Nature of Photography

Yesterday I went to one of the enrichment workshops. It covered the Art section of our requirement. I went to The The Nature of Landscape/Nature of Photography (9/22/09 at 1pm-2pm). Although it was a short tour around one floor I did witness many magnificent paintings and photographs. Some photographs in particular that i was amazed were the photos from Marilyn Bridges, who provided photos from a bird’s eye view. Also i was fascinated by Lucien Clergue’s Four Nudes in the City, New York, 1983 mainly because at first i didnt realize what the actual picture was until i stared at it for another 10 seconds. It was then I saw the nudity yet nice landscapes it portrayed. Overall this workshop was indeed exciting and interesting and I hope the future workshops will pose a new discovery and fascination for me.

Title of workshop: The Nature of Landscape/The Nature of Photography
Category of Workshop: Arts at Baruch
Date/time of workshop: 9/22/09 1:00om-2:00pm Administrative Building

The exhibit really let me experience new types of art. I am used to just seeing my friends drawings, or famous paintings. However this photography really opened my mind. For example, photos by Marilyn Bridges were all taken in her plane, which was really unique in my opinion. There was also a picture of four nudes representing mountains. I thought this was a really creative way to desplay nature.

After yesterdays meetingi was checking out the workshops online. I saw this was today, and it was relativley short, and I dont really like art too much so i figured I might as well go. I didnt want to go alone though because i thought it would be boring and lonely. So as soon as I got to school I started asking people to go.  The word spread and we all went as a LC together which was nice. In a way I’m not used to goong to art gallerys so that took me out of my comfort zone. I think the lady was overwhelemed that so many people attended, and I am not sure if she realized that it is because we all wanted to fufill our requirements. I did want to fufill my requirement like the rest of the people, but after attending I do feel like I experienced a new type of art and learned a lot.

My second workshop

Title of workshop: The Nature of Landscape/The Nature of Photography
Category of Workshop: Arts at Baruch
Date/time of workshop: 9/22, 1:00 til bout 1:30

Description: Was like a very quiet place with just walls and pictures on them. The goal? I don’t know, to learn how the pictures was taken?

Everything else: I chose that place because, just like everyone else, i wanted to finish these workshops as fast as i can because unlike Cody, i believe that in general, its a waste of time.  The pictures were interesting, i can’t like about that. Some were disturbing, but i won’t say what picture specially was because you keep deleting my comments and i don’t want you deleting this post. It didn’t take me out of my comfort zone, i’m always comfortable for the most part so yea. 2 workshops down, 4 to go.
