College/Community Service

Hey everyone!

School has officiallystarted. I know for me personally, I’ve been bombarded with homework and reading for lecture and all the rest of the stuff. I remember last year I read the following bumper sticker.

I thought that I could have only picked one. I chose two out three. Personally, I feel like I have a lack of sleep trying to catch up with friends and school and everything, and I sleep on the weekend or try to if someone doesn’t wake me up with a text or a phone call. Trying to find that balance is hard. Last semester for me , I lost my good grades. The first semester it was balanced out. What do you think you might lose?

I saw that not everyone has responded to whether or not they may come to the Community Service event. I recently found out that coming to the event and participating fulfills your requirement for Community/ Global awareness. I will be the one to sign and see if you participated and then will look at your blogs to see what you experienced by attending this event. The details for this event are that it is on Sunday, October 4th 2009, in Pier 54, West 54th Street at the Hudson River, Manhattan, New York. The ride starts at 7:30 but we will give out the shirts at 6:30 a.m. We have to be there probably around 6:00 a.m. I need a count to make sure of the details of what time we have to be there to set up the station to hand the t-shirts.

This blog is for you to express your feelings. It can be as sports such as football, baseball, (well tennis season ended), it can be about school, a reflection of your day. I like blogging (if you can’t tell) because since I can’t see everyone of you face to face every week, then I can catch you up on events. This blog is important since your Freshman Seminar instructor and I have to evaluate if you participated in the course.

That is it for now. Please blog about how you feel about college so far or about anything that is on your mind (that will not require for me to shut it down.) Comment on whether or not you are coming to Community Service.

By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE FOLLOWING SEPTEMBER BABIES: Mike DiNoto(September 15), Mike Eng(September 16), and Ryan(September 24th).

**UPDATE** I just checked the website and we would have to volunteer from 5:30 a.m.-9 a.m. Hope you can make it!

Recent News

I just received an email that the USG(Undergraduate Student Government) is taking a trip to Philadelphia. It is an overnight retreat from September 25th (Friday) to September 26th (Saturday). I am not sure of the details but someone will be coming in, I believe, on our second session(first time we are meeting in a classroom about Freshman Seminar) on September 21st. Attending this trip will fulfill your requirement of Global/ Community awareness in the enrichment passport.

I need to make sure how many people are coming to the community service. The community service is “Bike MS.”  It is on October 4th and we will be distributing the MVP T-shirts( for people who have raised over $1,000.00 for the event.) PLEASE RESPOND IF YOU ARE COMING OR NOT BY SEPTEMBER 18TH.
Thanks!

**UPDATE* Regarding the event coming up next Monday, you can come and go as you please. Going to the event fulfill a requirement for an enrichment workshop. Look on here for events as well as the categories.

Revelations of the First Week of College

The first week of College was not quite what I expected. I was looking forward to be bombarded with work and doing tons of preparation. To my surprise, much of it was simply review and light work, though this will probably fluctuate as the year progresses. The classes seem fine though I am a little annoyed at the level and difficulty of work that we are doing. Much of it seems to be a repetition of High School, even the material stated further on the syllabus. The people are great and friendly. My one complaint is the lack of dorms so everyone kinda scatters back home immediately after school. Because many people live hours away, you can’t exactly ask them to stay longer to chill.

My First Week

My first week at Baruch wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I was a little intimidated by the school and the teachers I thought I was going to have some mean teachers that yell a lot, but to my surprise I all my teachers were cool for the most part. The online homework is something very new to me and I will have to try and remind myself to check blackboard and all the other websites to see what assignments are coming up. I found traveling there not that bad cause I could do some work on the train to pass the time. I also really like the different people i met so far they all have their own unique personalities that are very interesting and i hope to leave this semester with a few new friends. Overall I loved my first week and I hope the rest of the year is not to bad.

Hi Baruch

mdinoto says

My first week was workable. I made it to all my classes on time and got there a tad too early, but I guess its better early than late. I spent tuesday’s long break by getting acclimated to the area around the school, which I guess could be considered my campus. There are a lot of good restaurents and the pizza from that little walk in place on 23rd Street is pretty good.

A big complaint I have is that our math teacher isn’t the best, he goes way to fast and the only reason I’m not lost is because this is all just a repeat from my high school years. I enjoyed my first week and only hopes it gets better through my years here.

My First Week @ Baruch :) :) :)

Honestly, Baruch is a lot better than I expected.  I thought i’d come in and out of the school without talking to practically anyone, and that people would be closed in to themselves.  Everyone in our LC is unique and quite a character in their own way, and I wouldn’t want anyone to change; you guys are all awesome.

The courses as much as I hate to say, I love them.  Although the first days went slow, I’ve become more and more interested (and stay awake with a little help from my handy dandy redbull/monster.. I really gotta fix up my time schedule with work).  I find myself drawn into the lessons themselves, but when I get home I’m still adjusting to how we do homework/checking all of our classes blackboards.  All in all, I love it so far and hope to enjoy it while I can before classes get intense (finals sound painful).

First Week…

My first day of school on a Monday morning was not as terrifying as I thought. Coming from Queens, I was not used to the busyness and the fast-paced flow of the city. I spent the night before asking questions and dreading being late for my classes the next morning. But when that first morning came as I sat in Tomasello’s class, I found myself at ease. The schedule wasn’t as complicated as I thought (even though I was a few minutes late for Math) all due to how helpful and friendly the students and the teachers are. I made a few friends and met many future ones.

The city became less intimidating and more exciting. I loved the variety of restaurants and delis all over downtown, the delicious coffee and not to mention, the interesting people i see on the streets…So all in all, the only problem I faced that day was keeping up with the work load given to us. I must now adjust my timing and set up priorities so that I will not fall back behind. But most importantly, I must now avoid the high school habit of procrastinating and avoiding valuable opportunities.

How my first week went.

My First day at Baruch was very good. Met new people, met old as well. Joined a club and now i feel like i know every one at Baruch. Class was easy but it’s only the first week. I expect it to be harder as weeks go by.

I’m confused at what/where/when we got to go to those little workshops even though i printed out some sheet that had all the info. it has all the info for ALL the groups and not just ours so maybe thats why.

How was your first week of school?

Please Blog about how you felt about the first week of school. Please be detailed. How are you adjusting so far? Do you have any expectations in Baruch or in any of your classes? Do you have question regarding anything? The point of this is to get you used to blogging. This is your blog. Please use it wisely. The point of this blog is to help you with your writing skills as well as get to know your fellow classmates. Remember what USG’s President said at Convocation, ““You all came to Baruch to succeed academically, but that is only half the reason you are here. Meet as many people as you can and get involved.” Baruch is a commuter school and it may be hard to resist just going home after classes but check out a club or something so you can have a sense of community that most of you probably experienced while you attended your high schools.

Some advice from The Ticker: http://www.theticker.org/sections/features/wise-advice-to-the-class-of-2013-1.1787211

**UPDATE*** please blog by this week since it is this is going to be your second week. Please BLOG not comment. Most of you so far have commented on this post. I want you to please blog about it by posting something. Please put if you are coming to the event which I have wrote on in the posts before.

HAVE A GREAT LABOR DAY!!

Follow-up

Thank you to those students who participated on voting which activity we will be participating on.  I saw on some of the comments below that some of you may have work. It is up to you if you want to take off work. This is not mandatory. The point of community service is to give back to the community and if you feel obligated to come to this event, then please do not come. I say this because I know some of you do not want to do this community service. The reason why I say this is because the other volunteers for this event (besides us) are there to volunteer for a reason. How are we as students not supposed to help out if we do not want to be there 100%? Please think about the people who are actually doing to Bike Ride for MS, if they do not think that we are there for the same reason then they will not feel supported. I know this because I have participated in an MS event before and the volunteers that are there are there because they are proud of the people who participated in the event. They probably did not do the event because of disabilities of because they felt like they could contribute on their part by helping out. On that note, please comment on this post to tell me whether or not you would like to participate. I am still not quite sure on what time it begins and what time it ends so please make sure that you will be free on that day and you do not have any prior commitments. The community service is also helpful so if you still don’t know each other well, we can talk and catch up. Another reason to do this event is because we will do it together as a group and not individually.

Another topic is that since none of you have your calendar/planner, I will post up the month’s events that is happening around Baruch from September 4th to September 25th.

  • This Friday September 4th, is the last day to drop any classes with a 75% refund. It is also the last day for any late registration.
  • This Monday, September 7th is Labor Day. Pleased be advised that the College will be closed. There is a rumor going around that next Tuesday, September 8 is following a Monday schedule. This is NOT true.
  • On September 10, Thursday, there are several events going on. One of them is the Big 4 Panel Presentation & Career Forum from 12 p.m. -2:30 p.m. This event is actually on Starr Search and you have to register for it, I believe. There is also a Women’s Volleyball game vs. SUNY Purchase, Main Gym, NVC B2 Level 7:00 p.m.
  • On Monday September 14 is the Last day to drop with 50% tuition refund
  • September 17th, Thursday, there is a Corporate Accounting Panel from 12:00- 2:30 pm. There is also a Women’s Volleyball Game against SUNY- Westbury in the Main Gym, NVC-B2Level 6:00 pm
  • From September 18, Friday to September 20, there are not classes
  • September 21st is the last day to drop with 25% tuition refund. It is also the last day to file pass/fail option (undergrads-WSAS)
  • September 22 is a Tuesday and it is the beginning of withdrawal grade (W); no refund. There is also a Women’s Volleyball game versus the College of Staten Island in the Main Gym, NVC-B2 Level at 6:00 p.m.
  • SEPTEMBER 24TH is the CLUB FAIR during club hours. This is where you get to meet most of the Baruch’s clubs and sign up. There will probably be a reminder in an email from Carl Aylman.
  • September 25th is a Friday and the last day to register for internship & independent study course. It is also Career Day, and I will be talking about that in our first Freshman Seminar Class.

Please also note that I did not cover all of the events. Some events will be said in an email from the Student Life Office. Please read those emails because they contain important information sometimes. Also near the Student Life Office on the second are forms to register to vote. If you have not registered to vote, please do so for this upcoming election. You can also check out: http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/studentaffairs/StudentLife/thisweek.htm

Please look on the side ————————————————————————————————–> to the Weekly Calendar for Freshman Seminar. I believe you can attend some events to fufill your requirement for the enrichment workshops. Click on details for more information.

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

***UPDATE** Yes we are doing the distribution of the MVP t-shirts. I just need a count of how many students plan on coming no later than September 18 on Friday. The latest is telling me on the day that we eet for FM Seminar. No exceptions, ifs and or buts.
