UNICEF

Since I was not able to attend the Light the Night community service event, I was given the opportunity to help out another LC who is trying to receive funding to send to UNICEF. After having a minor issue on the time for the meeting, Sophia the mentor of LC21 was very nice and compromising and said to come to the meeting at 2:40pm on the Wednesday November 4th 2009. There a couple of our LC 06 members were there, those who had unfortunately could not have attended the Light the Night event also and those who wish to do more community service.

After spending like fifteen minutes talking about what UNICEFdoes, and then deciding jobs, I was given the opportunity to work with a great and delightful person, Mike E. On Thursday November 12th 2009, Mike and I went to the Freshman Seminar office on a expedition on finding the fliers left for us to hand out. After Mike looked for a while and even asked fellow staff members in the office, I entered and found four copies. But then Rob came and asked what we were looking for, and he found the stack of fliers in back of a desk. After going to the escalators to hand out the fliers, we went and made copies of the last flier and posted them up. We also made a quick stop at the game room because I wanted to see how it was like and we informed them about our bake sale.

It  was a great hour spent getting people informed about the event that is going to occur tomorrow, so support the UNICEF bake sale. =-)

Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disptes

On October 29th, I attended the Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes workshop held in the Vertical Campus on floor 3, room 190. At this workshop, the leaders helped relay information to us that may help us in case we are in a bind. These type of binds can develop through class problems, group problems, or problems that just come out of nowhere. The most important thing they told us to do was confront the issue peacefully and don’t let it linger. By confronting it right away, there would be a better chance of nipping the issue early, rather than have it escalate. When confronting this issue they told us to make sure we don’t go into it with a chip on our shoulder and feel like we have to get our point across and just leave it at that. We have to be ready to negotiate and accept that we may have done something wrong and that we should amend our mistakes. They told us to stay clear of things that may seem like trouble and have a great, peaceful time at Baruch College.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter

On November 3rd, I went to 135 East 22nd Street to fulfill my Arts at Baruch enrichment workshop. At this gallery, I viewed the paintings of Mercedes Matter who was a New York City artist in the mid to late 1900s. Her art work was mostly paintings. It was very well drawn as she illustrated her abstract style. Her paintings had a wide variety of colors, most of which made a strong statement of how she felt. From the gallery leader, I was told that this style was taught to her by Hans Hoffman, who was an abstract expressionist. Her drawings portrayed how she felt and I felt she did a very good job. I enjoyed my trip to this gallery, as it opened my eyes to a new type of art that had not been aware of before.

Internship and Goal Setting

My sixth blog (I’m at the top of the mountain now)

On October 22, I went to an Internship and Goal Setting workshop. It was held in the multipurpose room and I must say it was quite a turn out. After a while, they closed the doors Indefinitely because it was getting too crowded. I went to this workshop by myself and I’m glad that I did because it gave me a chance to sit down peacefully and absorb the material. The main focus of the workshop was; to educate students about what an internship is, the benefits of an internship, and the steps possible in acquiring an internship. Also, the speaker stressed the importance of an effective resume. If you have trouble creating your resume no need to fear the Starr Career Development Center is here. They will assist you in any problems that you may encounter. The best part is it’s free to all students, which is awesome. In addition, the speaker spoke about how to nail an interview and the key is be yourself and do a little bit of research about your prospective company. If you can manage to accomplish these tasks you will have certainly get the position. In addition, the best part is having options to work with. If you have more than one offer presented to you, you feel confident and in control which is excellent. Obtaining an internship is a great way to expose yourself to the work force. Without attending this workshop I would have gone off into my college years not knowing the importance an internship. I am truly grateful that I attended this workshop because of the valuable knowledge I’ve gained.

The Engs, Library Video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci0uA6OQAxQ&fmt=22  <—– This is our library!!! LC06

When I first saw the “Visit to the Newman Library” video, I thought it was packed with great, useful information.  I did feel that the 7 minute length might deter interest, especially from incoming freshman. We wanted to make a “student-friendly” video that would first attract students into the library, while simultaneously showing them where to get help and get started.  The library sponsored the contest to “encourage freshman to EXPLORE the library, and learn about its various services and resources.”  We felt that first attracting freshman attention by showing various resources (in a lightly humorous, yet professional manner) would encourage them to explore the library. We felt like filming one specific service might not appeal to everyone, but if we showed a myriad of attractions it would have to spark at least one interest to our viewers.

Young people are not known to have long attention spans. We wanted to have our audience members enticed from the very beginning to the very end.  When a freshman sees the title and knows it’s a parody of the popular MTV Cribs, they will be enthusiastic to watch the entire video.  We weren’t sure if the final library committee would be okay with the hip-hop music and playful attitude.  However, we felt that we kept the GOAL of the video in mind at all times.  In addition to this, we felt that there is definitely a TARGET AUDIENCE for this project.  We think we will capture their attention with our creative choices and they will learn a wide spectrum of library’s uses. Finally, the video quality is another strength of our entry. The use of a tripod, the detailed editing, and using the Canon EOS 7D to record in HD added to the quality of our production. Also, the text accompaniment reinforces the vocal statements. A more visual audience member can grasp the concepts with ease.

Mike Eng, Community Service

Today me and Kali did the community service event for Unicef. We were assigned to hand out fliers near the escalators in the Vertical Campus. We had some trouble finding the fliers in the freshman seminar office, but then Racy Rob helped us find them. Me and Kali went to the escalators with the big pile of fliers. My first attempt to hand out a flier was a complete failure. The man didn’t take the flier! I’ll admit it, my ego was damaged and my feelings were hurt. However, after gaining the courage to hand out another, a woman gleefully accepted the flier and thanked me. After that, I felt like I was a professional at flier distribution. We handed the rest of the fliers out in less than 15 minutes. We felt like we should do more, so we made some copies of our last flier, and posted them around the Baruch Campus and told people in the gameroom about the bakesale. It was a great expereince, and Kali was a fun partner.

Stress & Anxiety Reduction Workshop

After attempting various of times to attend this workshop, finally on November 10th 2009 at 12:45pm, I was lucky enough to get in. Even though the workshop started at one, I had learned my lesson about this particular workshop and attend early with other fellow classmates.

The goal of this workshop was for us to learn a technique on how to reduce our stress. We had a meditation for approximately ten minutes, and we did a short exercise that one can perform just about anywhere. I had chosen this workshop because stress is something that you go through usually on a daily basis and if there’s a way to learn short techniques in figuring how to control it or just relax it, then that is good information that I am willing to hear. This workshop was not out of my comfort zone, in fact both of the presenters, Ryan Androsiglio, PhD and Joshua King, MS (that is what the paper they gave us said) had very soothing voices. I do not want to sound comical but there were people falling asleep to it during meditation, and it was funny that the CD(they play a CD that was suppose to help us during the meditation process) the man said do not be alarm and you find yourself falling a sleep. Or if you can not relax for a long period of time, which was what I was doing since I could not concentrate without something or someone distracting me.

It meet my expectations because even though I felt the time period was too long, while we were in their, it passed by very quickly. From the workshop I received this “muscle relaxation” exercisewhich is quick and you can do it almost anywhere. It is interesting on how the things mentioned in the workshop, are things I would sometimes do without noticing, especially the things on the muscle relaxation sheet, like how to stretch from you toes all the way up to your head. It was a good experience overall, definitely recommend if you want to listen to a way to relax.

Stress & Anxiety Reduction

Name of Workshop: Look at Title

Date: 11/10/09

Time: 1pm-2pm

Where: Room 4-220 at the VC building

Me, Kali and Ashley went to this event. He started talking about stress then gave us raisins. He made us look at it, then feel it, then smell it, then put it in our mouths, THEN chew it, and finally swallow it. He made us do them in detail. Then his twin brother came  and made us do some kind of stress meditation or something. It was cool but i was very sleepy and i didn’t really benefit from all of the exercises except for when he made us relax our legs. i really felt the “stress coming out” from there.

4 years and bumper sticker

You can participate if you like. I found this to be a great idea from another Peer Mentor. I also did this when I was in 8th grade and sent myself a letter and did not receive it until I graduated high school. I was weird looking back at how much I changed in 4 years.

For this blog, write a “Dear Self” letter. Include specific goals that you have for yourself over the next 3 or so years that you’ll be in college; what do you hope to accomplish? What are the habits that you need to kick or the areas that need most improvement in order for you to achieve your goals? If you want to add anything else, feel free.

Happy Writing! Note: Be as creative as you wish! You can comment on this post or create your own post.

So back in September, I posted this up

Now that you are almost done with the first semester(seven more weeks until the end of finals!) what do you wish you could’ve done better? what are your goals regarding this bumper sticker?

While you are at that, check out this article: http://www.theticker.org/about/2.8217/the-new-generation-1.2036137#5 . What do you think about it?

Carrer Exploration Enrichment Workshop

I went to an Impression Management fulfill the career exploration enrichment workshop. The speaker talked about how making a good first impression is key to get the job or get into a school. She said that most of these social network web sites like “myspace” and “facebook”  can cost people their jobs or cause them to not get into the school they want to go to because most students and young people have inappropriate pictures and language on these site. Most people don’t realize that once those pictures and other inappropriate things are on the internet you can never get rid of them and you can’t stop someone from seeing them. We also discussed how dressing s certain way can say a lot about a person. Also how someone talks; their tone and attitude can also say a lot about a person. I learned a lot and I feel more confident when I go on my next interview, that i will get the job or if I decide to transfer to another school I think I will get in.
