Club Fair

So this is one workshop i completely forgot to blog about. The club fair was a really fun workshop. Basically baruch was just giving us so much opportunities to be involved with something while we are at school, with rows and rows of clubs that were begging for us to join. I particularly became interested in this one club my friend from high school who played football with me is in, called ALPFA. It is entirely an Latino organization although it accepts all different types of ethnicities. So I signed up for that and I have been recieving emails from them to attend events. Im doing the best I can to attend, although with my workload its rather hard. Other than getting to know ALPFA, I wasn’t all that interested in any of the other groups. Just not my taste.

9/24/09 Club Hours

I went to the club fair to see the different opportunities that Baruch had to offer. When I walked into the gym it was packed with different people and it was then that I realized how diverse Baruch really is. There were so many clubs and organizations. It was a little strange for me to have to navigate through so many groups so I had to make rounds several times to reach any tables I had missed. I looked at groups such as the West Indian group and Billards group. I actually enjoyed hearing brief descriptions about the organizations and I would recommend going to the Club Fair to anyone because it is a good opportunity to learn about the Baruch community and allows people to socialize. I hope to look more into the groups for the future.

Community-Global Awareness

Title of workshop: Light the Night

Category of workshop: Community Global Awareness

Date/Time: 10/17/09 3:30-7:30

This involved volunteer service for the walk for leukimia. During my time volunteering I learned about servicing the community and I also learned about issues that are very important. In doing the service I saw some teams who were really dedicated to the cause such as a group of women who had heart pins representing their group. It was inspiring to see when it was nighttime and people held the balloons. It didn’t really take me out of my comfort zone because I’m used to participating in events like this. In my freshman and sophomore year of high school I was a team captain for the AIDS walk and so to me this wasn’t too far from managing the money and members then. It was actually kind of fun and I enjoyed spending the night before my birthday with some people from my LC.

Basic Interviewing

Title of Workshop: Basic Interviewing

Category of Workshop: Career Exploration

Date/Time: 10/29/09 12:50-2:30

The goal of the workshop was to show the techniques of giving a good first impression on a job interview. The speaker discussed issues from how to dress to the questions that interviewers often ask. I selected this workshop because I thought it would be a good idea to learn how to communicate and impress employers. Getting the job is really hard, especiallly during this time of economic struggle, so it’s important to show future employers what I am capable of by standing apart from other employees. This workshop took me out of my comfort zone because I am actually very nervous when it comes to introducing myself so it made me think about what I have to offer and how I can best present and represent myself. It met my expectations by addressing things that I really never thought about. It made me ask myself questions that emplyers would ask such: what are my weaknesses. I’m still trying to figure out the answers but it allowed me to give thought to it before an interview. I would recommmend this workshop because it would be very helpful to someone on a long-term basis as it pertains to real life situations. I learned how to better present myself from not only what’s on my resume but also in spoken as well as body language.

Club Fair

I went to the club fair for my student life enrichment workshop. This was very overwhelming. Their was a lot of different club and organizations. I am not really a club person so I wasn’t really into it, but my friend and I look around and there was a few interesting clubs. I saw a Caribbean club that looked interesting and looked like something that would interest me since my country is close to the Caribbean. I also saw a club that travels around the world to third world countries helping out. I still don’t think that I would join a club though. I might consider doing a semester abroad program though. I need to get away from my parents, I’m tired of living with them. It would also be a good opportunity for me to meet new people and live in a different country. After my friend and I were finished we both didn’t see and clubs that really caught our eyes.

Breast Cancer Walk

This Sunday I went on the Breast Cancer Walk on Queens  Blvd. It was nice seeing my old high school friends again. My friends and I have been going to the Breast Cancer Walk since freshman year of high school. For these past 4 years  the weather for the walk has always been good. I remember one year it was so hot people were wearing shots and a t-shirt and their was a lot of dogs dressed up in pink to represent the Breast Cancer Walk. This year it was kind of  dead usually this is a really big thing they would have news stations and dj’s and it would be a very lively event. I was a little disappointed when it started to rain and I say that most of my friends didn’t come because of the bad weather. Even though it was not the best walk I’ve been to, I still had fun and i got to see my old teachers  and i got to hang out with some of my friends after the walk. Overall if I had to choose to do this again I would probably still choose to go because it’s a good feeling just doing something good. I felt really good afterward because all I had to do was walk in order to help cancer victims. I had a great time and I look forward to do this walk again next year.

My fifth blog (I’m almost there)

I almost missed the Academic Enrichment workshop because I was having lunch with Mike E. and Patrick. When I arrived the workshop had already begun. We only missed 2 minutes of the presentation or so. This workshop was very informative because the speaker taught us how to use the Baruch library website. This is a very useful tool if you want to succeed in finding reliable sources. The best part is you can access the website from the comfort of your own home. When I am writing a paper there are two parts that I find most difficult which are finding creditable sources and completing a bibliography. I don’t have to worry and stress myself out anymore looking for creditable sources because they are all here on the website. The website comprises of many journals, newspaper articles, and books. Secondly, my bibliography will only take me 10 minutes instead an hour. The author, publisher, date, and all the other components in order to write your bibliography are all on the page. This was the best workshop I’ve been to because it helped me realize the different amount of tools I have at my disposal. When I am writing my papers from here on out I will use the Baruch library website to my advantage (that’s what it’s here for).

Title of Workshop Attended –Career Planning: Basic Interviewing

Category of Workshop – Career Exploration

Date/Time of Workshop – Oct. 30 12:50 -2:20

This workshop was all about job interviews.  What to expect, how to prepare, ect, ect.  There was a lot of information being fed to us during this workshop.  The goal was to give us tips on what to do for a job interview.

I chose to attend this workshop because I needed one more workshop to meet the Nov. 2nd deadline.  To be honest, I didn’t really want to go to this one.  In high school, we actually learned about this and even did a mock interview.  So a lot of this information for me wasn’t new.  This workshop didn’t take me out of my comfort zone because most of it was just sitting and listening.  There was an exercise to practice your “personal pitch” to the person sitting next to you.  But because I was sitting next to Roxanne, we didn’t take it very seriously.

If you have never been on an interview or don’t know anything about it, I would definitely recommend it.  The presentation had some really good information.  If you already have experience with interviews, you can skip this one.  It’s nothing you don’t already know.

We learned that it was most important to prepare for your interview.  It’s good to pay attention to your dress, grooming, and handshake.  Also, have a good resume write a thank you letter.  I also think it’s really important to just relax and be personal on an interview.

Title of Workshop Attended –Managing Relationships in College

Category of Workshop – Personal Enrichment

Date/Time of Workshop – October 8th from 12:30 – 2:30

The purpose of this workshop was to learn how to manage relationships in college.  The 4 different kinds of relationships that we discussed were family, friends, networks, and romantic.  I think the ultimate goal of this workshop was to show how we can maintain these relationships and have a successful college career.

I chose to attend this workshop because it was an interesting topic and it’s something that we all struggle with.  With all the stress and responsibility that college brings, it’s easy for relationships to fail.  I guess this workshop did take me out of my comfort zone.  At certain points, we were told to go talk to someone we didn’t know.  Approaching a complete stranger just to start a conversation is something I normally would not do.  But it ended up being fine, not as awkward as I thought it would be.

I don’t think I really go into any of these workshops with specific expectations.  This way, I’m always keeping an open-mind.  I think this ended up being a good workshop to attend, there was a lot of good information provided and it kept my attention throughout the presentation.  I would definitely recommend it to another student.  Must be a popular workshop cause it was pretty packed inside.

Light the Night

My fourth blog (I’m a machine)

By far, Light the Night was the best community service activity I have participated in, even though it was freezing outside. I arrived to Forest Park twenty minutes early so I was lending a helping hand to my fellow volunteers. It felt good to help people without being asked. Before I started doing my assigned task, I watched Ron and Patrick play a game of handball (Patrick lost). My designated task was to help people fill out their forms, collect money, and distribute movie tickets and free t-shits for those who raised enough money of course. It was fun because all the people I met were very friendly. There were older people there but surprisingly there were junior and high school students. It was great to see students participating in this event. Most of the students were from Bayside high school. In addition, I even met my ninth grade Spanish teacher Senora Benson. It totally shocked me to see my teacher and her daughter. She was still the same person I remember which is great. I hope she never changes. Also, there was a lot of free stuff here. We had pizza, chips, juice, and muscle milk. The amount of food that was here was amazing. All in all, Light the Night was the best experience I have ever encountered. If the opportunity came around to go for a second time I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to say yes.

I LOVE LIGHT THE NIGHT!
