Second Workshop: Club Fair

The club fair was awesome!!! On September 24th, I attended the club fair located at the gym with both Amanda and Madhavi. We walked around, signed up for clubs, asked questioned…

Honestly what I really liked about the fair was the first thing that was given to us right before we went into it.  It was a cute small map of the subways in New York City, and on the other side it possed locations of “cultural treasure”. This is very useful to me especally since I am always getting lost =D… After that the first desk we saw was where you get the signature for attending the workshop. We could have just got the signature and left, but we decided to stay and explore. This was the first signature I received in my planner, (the only one actually on my planner now)…

Aside from getting candy, dominican lollipops and drinking something new (thai iced tea), the fair was fun, I saw and signed up for potential clubs I might join. Something I was looking for was a sorority, but I did not find them, I was kind of disappointed but its okay…

This workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone because I like exploring and basically that what we were doing. The club fair met my expectations, except for the fact that even though all the tables were spread out, the fair was such a success that at times it was hard to walk through. But aside from that, like I previously said the club fair was entertaining.

First Workshop: Academic Enrichment

My first blog… how exciting…

The first workshop I attended was on September 17th 2009, it was called Academic/Advising Enrichment workshop. This workshop experience was kind of bad. There were a bunch of students waiting in the hall of the fifth floor, it was uncomfortable because it was also dark, (it seemed the school was trying to save money by having the lights off, or someone was playing a prank or something). After being huddled for like twenty minutes, we were taken to a room. Here they explained what happened and a lady came in real quick introduced herself and left. There was another lady who asked us if we had any questions after giving a brief introduction to what it is that the office of advisement does. Eventually no one had any questions so, she started to sign peoples planner. I along with other students were disappointed especially since we had not received our planners yet. After taking a piece of paper and getting it signed I hoped I did not lose it. But hate the fact that it is not in my planner so now I have an ugly piece of paper that throws off my signatures for these workshops… Also, most students were very disappointed on how we did not get cookies since the workshop was such a “success” and so many people had ended up showing up.

The End =)

Light the Night ’09

This was certainly one of the best things I have done this fall. I had a blast. My job was to keep security right inside the entrance. Although I didn’t do much, I am sure participants remember me for obnoxiously asking to see their wristbands (I wasn’t actually obnoxious, just threw it in there for added excitement). Besides my job, before hand I played handball with my fellow peer Charlie Chong. It was an interesting game after I beat him 11-3 first, then 21-13 because he tried to hustle me. But I remain the champ of LC 06 as no one will accept my challenges anymore.

After it was all over, we were lucky to meet with a muscle milk promoter/distributor who was more than willing to give us multiple free samples, I still have enough for another week of working out. Thanks Muscle Milk!

Career EXPLORATION

Today, october the twenty seventh of the year two-thousand and nine, I embarked on a journey to floor three room one-oh-nine to explore my career path. WRONG. I went to a workshop on how to right a resume (accent on the e). It was stupendious. I learned many things to inlcude. Whether it be my abilities, my past experience, my desires, and my capabilities. Also I realized to make good impressions with my proffessors, AS WELL AS my bosses (shout out to TOYS “R” US) because I will need them in the future. The workshop was jammed, but I took the most I could get out of it, but I know for sure I will be in the STARR CENTER some time in my future to help me write a legit resume(once again accent on the e) FOUR WORKSHOPS DOWN, TWO TO GO. HOLLA FO A DOLLA. WERD!

Old workshop…Freshmen Reception

There was a postcard in the mail telling all freshmen to attend the “Freshmen Reception”.  But they made a mistake. They were supposed to send it to a few freshmen’s at a time, each with different workshop dates. Due to their mistake, every single freshmen attended the event. This caused a huge crowd on the 3rd floor with everybody trying to go into the room we were supposed to be in for the event. They had to put groups of freshmen into different rooms and explain how the whole situation went wrong. There was also supposed to be cookies but because of the error, we didn’t get any. Basically the event was a Q&A event. People asked questions and the lady there answered them. It finished much earlier then it was supposed to and overall, it was a waste of my time.

Light the Nite

Lite the Nite was a surprisingly “ok” event.  I had a good time with all my friends and it felt good. I met up with Patrick at the Bowling Green Station but we went to Citibank first so i can take for $20 bucks “just in case”. When we went down the station, we saw Ashley sitting in the bench waiting for us. I knew that she was going to meet up with us at the same station me and Patrick met up in but i was surprised to see her already there just waiting for us. As we met her, the 5 train arrived just in time and we took it to Brooklyn Bridge. We then transferred to the J. I wanted to go on the new, cleaner J train but instead, we got on the “ghetto” one. Once we arrived at the station the event was at, we saw Popeyes on our way down the stairs. Immediately i thought about Kali, Amanda, and Madhavi because they just LOVE chicken. Then as we walked towards the park, we saw Martine who claimed she heard Ashley’s loud laughter but anyway…..we arrived and saw Roxanne and Deron. Roxanna was giving Analucia directions!!!!!!! So while she got lost and tried to find her way, me Patrick and Deron played handball. Then she came and we saw Ron and Mike D. as well. Ron played handball with Patrick for money while we waited to see what we were going to do and poor Pat lost twice….but the drinks that we stuffed into our bags + MOVIE PASSES made up for that. It felt good acting like we had authority over the people trying to register like i forced half of the Bayside kids to donate whatever was in their wallets.  They thought they wouldn’t be able to go in if they didn’t pay…..well some of them thought.

After all that i went to Patrick’s “Temple” to use the bathroom then went on home with my dad thinking i went to some party with all drinks i had in my bag.

Light the Night

Light the Night was actually pretty fun. The volunteer work we had to do wasn’t too rigorous. I saw some old high school friends which was pretty neat. The people who were registering were all polite. I wish we could have raised money. It was really sweet to see how many people cared enough to actually participate in a walk, on a cold, rainy night in order to show their support. I’ve been to Light the Night before, and I will probably go again. I really believe that Light the Night is one of the best walks out there; the environment is fun and friendly.  I would recommend going next year to all of my friends.

Light the Night

On Saturday the 17th, i went to Forest Park along with about 11 others from the learning community to volunteer for Light the Night. Light the Night is a walk to help find a cure for blood cancers. At first, i felt it was going to be a long day, but afterwards I found my prediction to be very wrong. For me, it turned into a very fulfilling day, one that may get to volunteer at more events like this one. I didn’t feel this way until a lady came to register with her family and expressed how thankful she was that we came out in this weather to help out with some so close to their hearts. It made me feel good, as well as put forth a stronger effort the rest of the night to make these people have the best night possible. I wish that as a group we could do more activities such as this one, which not only reaps rewards for ourselves, but helps us create a stronger bond with each other.

Fresh Start Freshman Opportunities

So I don’t recall exactly the date and time of this workshop, but I do remember that it was at the Center for Advisement and Orientation( or something to that effect). It was havoc – extremely disorganized and fruitless. I think that the administration did not expect such a large amount of people to show up. There was not enough food or drink for anyone, nor was there enough information. It ended up with the people running the program, blindly signing all of the the books with barely any information given.

Luckily when everyone left the two people that ran the workshop stayed behind and I was able to ask them information regarding my transfer. They promptly directed me to the Dean of Students to fill out my Common Application. Very informative after-session

Light the Night

Light the Night was okay. I think I would have enjoyed it much more if I was not at a party the night before and woke up extremely tired. By the time I got there [Okay I just hit publish and this wordpress interface deleted my entire post until up to here…] at 4:30. All the pizza was gone and people were already at the check-in posts so I was placed with Ron to do Security. I wouldn’t have minded if it wasn’t so freezing cold despite my gignormous Down North Face Coat. It was very aggravating standing there so long but the free food and drink kind made up for it.

I was amazed to see so many people. Having organized past Light the Night events, I would only imagine how many people would have showed up if the weather was even better.

The free pasta and muscle milk attracted alot of people. I heard that alot of people took AMC tickets – I didn’t even know that there were tickets until after I left. All it all, it was okay. The only thing I could really complain about is the commute to and from there. I spent 4 hours on the train that day – more than any other day. Since it was for a good cause I guess I can’t say much.
