Database Survival

Last Thursday I attended the Database Survival workshop in the Library. It was extremely informative, giving an outline of all the databases that Baruch offers, LexisNexis, Jstor, etc. What I found very informative was the amount of magazines that some of these databases had. It would have been even better if they had some sort of current-events database that updated as news was broadcasted. A feature that I liked in much of the databases was the ability to search using inclusive and exclusive terms such as “and” “or” and “not”. Otherwise, everything else was pretty much self explanatory, much like a high-scaled google search. All it all, it was very informative but it really didn’t need to be that long. I think the administration forgets that we are a breed of the 21st century and don’t need that long to comprehend the internet.

Sonia Sotomayor Workshop

So this workshop was hosted by Baruch professors discussing the nomination of the first Latin American Female Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor on September 22 12:45-1:40 on VC 7150. There was much discussion about gender roles and the image that the media shows her in. In addition, alot of words were exchanged about how the politics were predominantly in the roles of white men. Race also was a huge issue as a pyramid of race was inferred; the Election of a Black President was a milestone for African Americans. Now, hispanics seem to be sitting in the racial position that African Americans were in.

Student Life Club Fair

This workshop was extremely informative but also extremely overcrowded. I was lucky enough to get into the gym early before they tried to make us wait in a line. There wasn’t any specific clubs that I looked for because I knew I would be transferring. I’m also Vice President of a club currently so I already knew about the inner workings of a Baruch Club. What I found very interesting was the amount of clubs at Baruch. I really wonder how many of these clubs actually have more than 10 active members. I also got a very nice tri-color highlighter.

Light the Nite walk

This workshop was the best so far I personally think. I was amongst the first of our class to arrive along with Ashley and Basheer when we later saw Martine and we walked up together to the park. When our peer mentor came we checked in with her and received our volunteer uniform which was very small. Our task was too register or guide people into entering the walk properly. We gave out free T-shirt cards to those who donated $100 or more to the walk for Leukemia and Lyphmona. There were many people in attendance despite the nasty weather. There was food and drinks provided throughout the event which fueled us to volunteer the best of our abilites. We did meet other people who also volunteered from different colleges such as St johns. After a few hours of hard work and effort we were dismissed and went to go get food and drinks as well as a free T-shirt we all wanted while giving the cards out. The event was a success and very fun especially when you know you are helping people. It doesnt matter if we did this for fun, money or even forced because in the end it paid off. We didn’t need any money or rewards and as a result because we didnt expect anything in return we were rewarded an early dismissal as well as food, drinks, a great time which all contributed to a good time we all had.

Building and Managing Relationships In College

I attended this workshop because I was interested in how I was and will be managing and building my relationship in college. I knew it was a hard task so i showed up to catch a few tips. Ambrose, Deron, Mike Eng and I made it just in time because  a few minutes later  they were not letting any more people in since it was well over the expected amount. We had to stand, squat, or lean on the walls for a bit until they finally went to get more seats. After that the speaker had everyone introduce themselves to 5 new people around yourself as well as across the room. We all introduced ourselves to the nearby people and then got up and went over to the otherside. I was surprised to see some familar faces as well as new peopl I met who were really cool. Deron saw one of his friends from elementary and they had a good conversation for the whole workshop which was quite long. Overall it was a fun workshop and I picked up a few ways to make friends and good relationship for the future. This workshop was in the vertical campus on the first floor where freshmen orientation first began, forgot the room name or number. It was on 10/8/09 from 12:40pm-2pm.

Freshmen Reception

This event was a while ago but the experience is still memorable. It was a day of chaos and anarchy considering that there were students everywhere and going to all sorts of places. This workshop was very disorganized but was apologized for by the speakers. They did not expect this many freshmen and this took place in the vertical campus from about 12:30pm – 1pm on 9/17/09. Eventually we were all split into different rooms and were given a short speech about Baruch as well as a welcome. Most of the freshmen never received a planner at that time so we were told that they can sign on a piece of paper which I still have but may lose so this is my proof along with my classmates. So when it was time to signing everyone surged to be of course, first. I was among them who luckily scored one of the first few signatures. She had a long signature until she realized how many she had to sign so she changed her signature to a weird looking “R”. Overall it was the easiest yet, crazy workshop. It didnt take long but prior to entering the room there were at least 5000 freshmen on the floor like they have just seen the Yankees win the World series, which they might do this year.

Student Service Fair

On a boring Tuesday 10/13/09 during the two hour break Basheer and I decided to go to the student service fair. I did not have my planner with me regardless i still went and was indeed fascinated with all the students as well as the information centers. We received a folder along with a card that requires to be punched by a hole puncher 10 times from 10 different info stations. There was information for financial aid, Team Baruch, Baruch teams for sports, clubs, writing center and many more. All you need to do is to ask a few questions and listen to them talk for a short period and they would punch your card. Once Basheer and I received a good amount of info and 10 holes punched we proceeded to the entrance where we came in for the raffle and to sign our books. Since i did not have my planner she signed the folder which had some sort of certificate looking paper attached to it. Basheer and I didnt return to see who won the raffle but overall it was a fun experience. Even though i still may not know all the info about each station or department I took some of there brochures or booklets that decribes what the are, provide and where to reach them incase I do happen to need assistance that they can hopefully help me on.

Student Services Workshop

Title of workshop: Student Services
Category of Workshop: Academics something
Date/time of workshop: 12-2

Description: Hmm, whats on that sheet they gave me…ok the fair had: Center of Academic Advisement, Bursar’s Office, Financial Aid, Testing & Evaluation, Writing Center…….everything a freshmen would ever want to know.

Everything else: We had to go around at least 10 services in order for them to sign my book. We had a card wit little holes to get them hole-punched. Once i got all 10, i gave it to a lady and she put it in the “raffle” basket and signed my book. She said stay or come back at 1:30 to see if i won the raffle but i never win anything so i didn’t go back.

Mike Eng- Managing Relationships and database Use

At the managing relationships workshop, I learned a lot. It told me that i need to make time for my family because they miss me.. It also told me making a network is important because 44% of jobs are through netweorks. After the workshop I mad a linkedin.com account. Cody is my only friend though. It also forced me to introduce myself to new people which is outside my comfort zone because I am normally shy.

The database worksop was also helpful. I learned to look up things using other sources than googe. The database is much more specific and catering to my needs than google. It can also print graphs and highlights the material that might be good for you. I iwill definitley use a database in my next research project. Me and Patty and Deron got yelled at by a lady whwen we asked her a question though. we thought we needed a sheet to answer questions on during the presentation and when we asked her for the sheet she yelled at us. Overall it was a good experience though.

Student Services Fair

Today, October 13th, I went to the Student Service Fair in the Muilti-purpose room. In this fair, we were required to go to 10 stations, each of which in detail described to us some advantages offered to us at Baruch. For example, athletics and academic advisement had a table. These tables were very informative. Although I had been aware most of these organizations existed, it was a good refresher to know the location of the separate departments in case I ever need to take advantage of them. It was slightly crowded, but I would say there was enough room to get around.
