Mike’s Adventure At the Club Fair

OK, so maybe I’m three weeks late at posting about this, but at least I’m posting.  On September 24th, I went to the club fair held in the gym.  It was awfully crowded, but none the less I became aware that every fraternity is racially segregated (not that I’m the least bit interested in frats).  This intrigued me because I thought Baruch is really big on diversity, yet it brought me back to my high school days when everything was divided by race.  So I moved on and looked at all these clubs and none really sparked my interest.  I mean there was a lot of ethnic clubs and clubs for personal interest, but I realized I don’t have the time to dedicate towards being an active member of a club.  But I took in all the information available to me and took mental notes of my options at Baruch.  Although I left the gym without joining a club. I was able to feel apart of Baruch Student Life for my first time.

Sick sick sick :(

What a horrid weekend, I lost my DSLR camera + p&s camera, lost a ton of money, and when I woke up today my cold seemed to have gotten a bajillion times worse.  Even better, my doctor’s office isn’t opened today.  So while I was sipping on my chicken noodle soup I decided i’d finally get this blog thing done.

I feel like posting multiple blogs within a time span of 30 minutes seems a bit haughty, so i’ll just write all of them on this.  If that’s a problem, please let me know (Analucia).

Our first workshop was a complete fail.  There were apparently way more kids that showed up than expected.  On a worse note, there was no food (i kid i kid.. actually maybe not).  Basically the outcome of the confusing ordeal was about a paragraph of speech and having not our planners signed (since we didn’t have them at the time), but our own pieces of papers (which I need to find by the way…).  I felt bad for the hosts of the event, they seemed overwhelmed but I feel like they were happy they had such a huge turnout; at least they know for future years that if their event counts as a Freshman Seminar  enrichment workshop during club hours they’ll need a bigger room.

____

For Arts at Baruch, I attended the Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape/ The Nature of Photography.  It was a bit odd for me considering I’m really into Photography, I didn’t even know what it was gonna be about (I was just tagging along at first).  I still have the handouts we received that day, and definitely learned a lot including a few Photographer’s names I should check out.

____

Managing Relationships was pretty cool since we were forced to introduce ourselves to new people, this was definitely one of the more “engaging” workshops.  I had to have 10 surveys for a club filled out the same day, and this workshop definitely helped me find those 10 people.

____

The Blood Drive was like all of the other blood drives I’ve participated in.  Fill out long form, wait in line, get finger pricked for iron test, wait again, get blood sucked from the bod, and then be rewarded with a plentiful supply of cheez-its, apple juice, and water.  I don’t know why, but usually when I donate blood it takes me longer to fill up my bag than others.  Sometimes two people will be in and out while i’m still sitting there.  I don’t know if I have a weird aura that repels the nurses/doctors from checking on me or if it’s my body.  I shouldn’t be complaining though, things could be worse (ask Anthony about it, or read his blog).  I’ve had a similar (but not as bad) experience, where my arm started getting shooting pains and although I notified the staff they told me it was nothing and I should ignore it.  After a long period of time (and multiple people finishing before me when i started before them) a staff member realized blood wasn’t going into the bag anymore, so she decided to stab randomly in my arm until she seemed content.  Again, no blood was coming out.  The doctor came over and removed the needle completely and then reinserted it again, again to no avail.  After a few more “trial & error” attempts they got some blood flowing out, and I was finally done after another long amount of time.  When I was done, I felt faint and almost passed out, I felt like it was hard to breathe, so they sat me down on the side for a while.  I don’t know why blood donors all have these freaky stories but it’s ironic how we still always come back (I mean, the cause is definitely worth it).

___

So those are my thoughts on the workshops I’ve been to, I’m gonna get another batch of chicken noodle soup and make some more honey lemon tea, then head to sleep.  I’ll see you guys tomorrow, regardless if I feel like crap still or not since we have that music test, and then i’ll see you guys on thursday as well since we have that anthro midterm and english draft due.  I hope massive amounts of sleep and NyQuil serve me good.

workshop 2

Title of Workshop – Building and Managing Relationships in College

Category of Workshop – Personal Enrichment

Date/Time of Workshop – Thursday October 8th from 12:45 – 1:40ish

Brief description & workshop goals – Well this workshop was, as you could have guessed from the title, about relationships. The speaker, a lady physiologist who is on maternity leave, talked about ‘4 very important relationships you will have to manage will in college’. They are: Family, Friends, Romantic, and Networking. In regards to family she said that now that we are in college problems might surface like boundaries and managing actually seeing your family and doing projects, hw, etc. On the topic of friends, she said that we should try to go out of our comfort zone and make friends at college instead of just sticking to old high school friends. Then in romantic, she said that we should strive to have healthy relationships and understand that breakups may occur. And finally with networking, she advised us to be friendly with our teachers as they will be the ones to provide us with recommendations for grad school and to sign up for linkedin, a website for professional networking.

Explain why you selected this particular workshop and how it took you outside of your comfort zone. If it did not take you outside your comfort zone explain why not – Honestly, I chose this workshop because it falls during club hours and I had nothing else to do. Usually I’m studying for a test or working on a project but this week I didn’t really have anything and since I haven’t been doing any workshops I figured might as well as get started right. Umm about the comfort zone: I don’t really think it took me out of my comfort zone. The lady didn’t ask me to walk across fire or eat like snake parts or anything of the sort so nothing was uncomfortable about it. I had a seat and talked to Roxanne and some other people around me which was pretty usual.

How did this workshop meet or fail your expectations? Would you recommend it to another student? Why or why not – I didn’t really have expectations so the workshop didn’t fail or meet anything. I kind of figured there was going to be speaker, some slides or note giving of some kind, and the typical ‘be involved’ speech. And that’s exactly what happened so yeah. I guess I would recommend it to another student. I mean it was an ok workshop. It wasn’t like some horrible, boring speech. It was just very routine. And plus me and Roxanne were hungry.

What do you feel you learned from the workshop experience? What surprised you about that? What was new that you could take away from this experience? Hmmmm from this workshop I learned that…… Mike Eng’s alter ego is Armando. See for every subtopic of the workshop (family, friends,…)  we had an exercise in which we would have to go talk to other people and tell them about our lives in connection to the subtopic. So for the friends part we had to meet new people and Mike came by and said ‘Hi, I’m Armando. You?’ So yeah that was quite interesting. Other than that like I said it was very routine.

A few things…

First off, I got the following e-mail:

There have been increasing concerns with the manner in which freshmen are approaching the enrichment workshops.  Some of them seem primarily concerned with getting only their requirements filled, and express frustration and anger if they are refused a signature if they come in late, leave early or stay for just 10 minutes.

These enrichment workshops have been set up to challenge our students and to help them get out of their comfort zones.  The message conveyed to students needs to be very clear on this.  They have been given the autonomy to get to know the college in ways that we hope will keep them not only challenged, but also help them to develop some self management skills.

Certainly, there have been some hiccups in the past few weeks.  But we are learning from this, and I am ask that we work together to challenge and develop our students to get the most out of their first year experience. Please stay for the ENTIRE Presentation. If there are too many Freshman, and you do not get a chance to get your passport signed, please blog about it and ONLY THEN will I sign it.

I want to also urge you to keep checking the blog calendar for last minute changes that might occur.  There are some changes for this week that are reflected on the calendar that you should definitely review.

Personal Enrichment Workshop: Building and Managing Relationships In College

Date: October 8, 2009

Time: 12:45-2:00PM

Location: VC – Multipurpose Room

The Managing Relationships workshop aimed to focus on guiding students on how to handle the changes and hardships the relationship they have with their family, friends, and loved ones go through. The workshops aimed to provide students with advice on keeping these relationships strong and less stressful to handle. The workshop wants students to be able to learn how to balance the hectic life of college with social and love life.

I selected this particular workshop, because I personally am having a difficult time balancing my relationships outside school. I have very, very close friends who are also bombarded with college work, and it doesn’t help the fact that they are away in another school or just simply unreachable. The friends that are near me and  are easily able to reach me tends to get disappointed when I don’t return their calls or when I cancel out on seeing them because of the work I must catch up on in school. So, these particular relationships are strained because of long distance and bad timing. My close-knit family also gets disappointed when I don’t join in the dinner table because of the work I’m bound to doing at the moment. I attended this workshop to learn a few guidelines in fixing these relationship and distance problem.

The workshop did take me outside my comfort zone because the speaker asked the students to “mingle” and “socialize” by going up to a random student we don’t know. Each of us had to do it b going across the room and introducing our names and one little fact about us. This took me outside my comfort zone because I am particularly shy when it comes to meeting new people and introducing myself. But I got through it in the end as it turns out to be quite entertaining.

His workshop met my expectations because the speaker did provided very good advice on how to manage relationships (hence the title), especially those that are strained by distance or college life. Therefore, I would definitely recommend this workshop to another student, even if he or she doesn’t have the same problems as I did, but to just learn guidelines about keeping a relationship strong.

I learned that it’s not entirely impossible to have a social life outside college during freshman year when most of us, students are adjusting to the work load and the new environment. That was certainly something I did not expect to be possible. I learned to fix those relationship problems with my family and close friends.

Anthony’s Blood Drive Exp.

So yesterday*October 6th* Baruch held a blood drive in the all purpose room.  I went down there expecting the best because I have given blood plenty of times before, and this time felt like any other time.  I saw Ambrose down there..with his feathered and lethal hair..and i sat down and took the same survey of questions as the past 3 years.  Since I am “big” (according to the director of the blood drive), and i have a high iron count, i usually use the Alyx Machine.  It takes out your red blood cells, and pumps the white blood cells and plasma back into your body.  It takes out more than the normal amount of blood, and since they love my blood (-O) i figured what the heck why not.  So i sat down on the machine, like always, and figured it would be another pitch in my arm, 5 songs on my ipod, and i was done…but this time something went wrong.  The machine is all on one big timer.  The thingy that squeezes your arm to get your blood pressure *and yes i did say thingy* is on a timer with the needle that sucks the blood out of your arm, which is on a timer with the fluid that gets pumped back into your arm.  So the *thingy* kept squeezing my arm tighter and tighter, and it really started to hurt.  I told the lady and she insisted that it was normal to feel pain at first, but i knew that it wasnt supposed to hurt that bad.  Whatever, i dealt with the pain until i looked down and my whole arm turned purple.  Literally PURPLE.  I told the lady and she kinda giggled and said “your fine hon—Oh my god! Mike come here!!!” Mike is the director of the whole blood drive.  So what had happen was,  the machine kept squeezing my arm tighter and tighter, and blood kept getting sucked out of my arm until there was no blood left. WOOHOO! I had no feeling in my arm all day, according to a couple of guys, and i quote, “looked like shi*”. I wound up eating a “chex mix turtle bar” from mike and kinda felt better after that =).  I went on the train after and what do you know..i completely was out cold and had to be waken up by the conductor before he left. Well all in all, It was a GREAT expierence, and i am now scared to give blood again!

How this week went

I had two tests this week. Math and ecology. The math was towards the easy side and ecology was just too easy (although i made careless mistakes ugh). There were opportunities to go to some workshops this week but i decided to do some next week and focus on my tests instead. My Google Earth Project as well as my Essay for writing I was due on oct 1st so i’m glad i got those done in time. Ended my school week with a nice 1hr workout.

Ron’s Experience at the Art Show

Happy LC 06

Don’t we look like a happy family? haha

Well that Art Show wasn’t as what I expected it it to be. It was rather small and I figured it would have been art by current students at Baruch. But I can’t lie, I was pretty impressed by the angles some of these photographers captured from as well as the images they wanted to express by cropping. I had a blast with my friends, and I feel like I wouldn’t of been able to fully get the experience if none of them were there.
