Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

Today I went to the gallery tour workshop that was offered in the art building. There was a long line of freshmen trying to complete this workshop. Luckily they were allowing 25 people at a time for each tour. I got there around 1 p.m and the tour for my group began around 1:40 p.m. The wait wasn’t that bad since I had my mp3 player as a form of entertainment. Once we entered the gallery we were told to put our bags and coats on the rack and sign our names on a sheet of paper. All of the artwork in the gallery consisted of the artwork done by Mercedes Matter. Most of her art was very abstract. Some of the artwork didn’t have titles and I guess each person has their own interpretation of the artwork. Mercedes used a lot of bright colors and geometric shapes in her pieces. To be honest I really wasn’t interested in most of her paintings because they seemed similar in that they were abstract. The tour was short and lasted a good 15 minutes, which consisted of explanations from the tour guide of about 4 or 5 of Matter’s paintings.
