Internship and Goal Setting

On November 10th, the Starr Career Development Center held a workshop about Internships and Goal Settings. This was by far the most useful workshop I’ve attended and acted as an eye opener. I wish I had attended this workshop earlier this semester. Theresa Conway, who works in the Career Development Center was very clear about what students should be aware about during their years in college and what Baruch can do for the student regarding careers. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a good GPA. Each student starts off with a 4.0 and its their job to maintain high grades. Once the GPA falls, its hard to bring it back up. Potential companies look at a persons GPA as a big factor, some companies even required a 3.0 GPA to consider looking at a potential applicant.   Also, Ms.Conway emphasized the importance of setting learning objectives. Without objectives, its difficult for a person to realize what they want from their potential job/career. These learning objectives should be very specific. Instead of “I want to work with computers” a more specific and useful objective would be “I want to use excel”. These goals will allow a person to pick out what they want in a career and what they don’t want to do.  Ms. Conway emphasized that companies are now looking for freshman and sophomores to enter the company and have the student work their way up to internships which could possibly lead into a full time job after graduation. It’s somewhat of a  feeder system for students to become employees. The freshmen and sophomores should be aware of this and try to apply to company programs.  The STARR Career Development Center is open from 9a.m – 5p.m on Mondays and Fridays and from 9a.m -7p.m  from Tuesday to Thursday. In order to get resume reviews and/or  mock interviews, a student must first attend a resume workshop and/or a interview workshop. These services are important aids to students who need some help. Ms. Conway informed the students in the workshop that there would be a Diversity Fair Internship on November 20th from 12p.m. to 4p.m in the Newman Vertical Campus Gym. Also there will be a Internship Fair on February 5th from 12p.m. to 4p.m in the Newman Vertical Campus Gym as well. There will be a Job Fair prep workshop on November 19th during club hours in 1-107 NVC.
