On November 17th i attended the art gallery that collected the pieces (specifically paintings) made by mercedes matter. She used shapes very often in her paintings, specifically many triangles of varying shapes and sizes. The majority of her works were still life paintings, which depicted various objects such as fruit on a table. She also made landscape paintings, and the tour guide explained to us that she went through various phases in terms of the types of paintings she made and the materials. She told and showed us that at first her early works involved still life and used oil based paints on canvas, and then her later works involved materials like charcoal and more geometric shapes and lines. Overall, the gallery was enjoyable to view because Ms. Matter created some very lovely pieces. The tour guide was also helpful in illustrating the phase of the artist’s life related to each specific piece, and kept the tour interesting without it seeming like it was grinding on.
