Today I attended my last workshop for Freshman Seminar. This workshop was about college students committing suicide throughout the country. The reason this workshop was created because it’s suicide awareness week. It started with a short 30 minute film about several personal accounts of students who experienced suicidal thoughts themselves and others who knew their friends were thinking about suicide. After the video finished we had a open group discussion and apparently there were a few students who felt strongly about the issue of suicide among college students. There was a conflict during the discussion between two students who were arguing the same point, but didn’t realize it. That was a little strange to see two people who think they are arguing different points, but actually had the same point. If these students were in my English class they would know the correct form of counter arguing. Besides that, there were interesting facts about suicide. Depression is one of the main factors of suicide among college students, especially freshmen, because they have to get used to that new transition. A surprising fact is that suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. They also gave out sheets with a lot of facts about depression and suicide as well as a resource list for students that need help or for students that are trying to help others.
