Let’s Talk About Ethics… Let’s Not

I went to the workshop “Let;s Talk About Ethics.”  I honestly found it very boring.  They taught us about things that we knew already.  I felt like this workshop could have been for high school or even middle school kids, not college students.  The teachers tried to make it as interesting as possible which was nice, they were fun.  But the whole idea was a common sense topic.

The fun part was probably when they had us all stand on opposite sides of the room and asked us questions on certain ethical situations, and we had to alternate sides according to our opinions.    The rest was too middle school for college kids: trying to teach a lesson about the difference of right from wrong and good from bad was a waste of time when there are a million other college responsibilites I could have been getting done.   Sorry for the harsh opinion :/

Impression Management

The impression management workshop is one that everyone should go to. Even though most of it is obvious it teaches you how to improve your impersonality and the way you should act towards others. It talked about the way you should communicate with people and how you should always be direct and open. The speaker was very friendly and spoke very well. It also taught us to keep our personal lives separate from our business life and that we should untag ourselves from pictures that give us a bad rep, because no one wants to see you partying while taking tequila shots, well maybe your friends do but not the company hiring you. Even though most of what she had mentioned we already knew, it made us more aware of how we should act toward others.

club fair

Club fair was exciting for me because of all the thrills and unity it brought in one gymnasium!! There were 170 clubs advertising themselves in all different types of categories. I was on the suppliers side since i had joined the USG as a class representative before. Therefore my duty during the club fair was to recruit as many people as i could. So the USG and I devised incentives which would lure people to become curious and then finally take the chance and sign up. Surprisingly the club fair for USG was incredible we had immense amount of signatures and emails of all types of students from freshmans to juniors. I felt very proud of the hardwork i had inputted in this process and was enjoying describing all the wonderful opportunities my club could offer to students who are majoring in various subjects. I was so glued to my work that i lost track of time and didnt even realize how two hours went by. It was 2:29 and my math class  was going to begin in one minute, i had to quickly let someone else take over and i rushed faster then the superhero flash to my class. However my math teacher wasnt to happy about me being the last one to enter the class. But the positives that i experienced was worth the chance i took. I really enjoyed this workshop.

What Are Your Study Habits Like?

Which are you doing?

Which are you doing?

Studying it is supposed to comprise about 30 hours each week for every semester that you are a full time student, so 2 hours for every hour that you are in class.

I wonder how many students within Baruch College actually do this, both Freshman and Seniors alike. For the common perception is that you will have to give up your social life in order to accomplish it. But is this true?

The answer is that it depends. It depends who you are and if you can effectively manage and organize your time and work. There are people who manage to accurately schedule every second of their time and are therefore are always aware of the deadlines they have. They get things done during the times that they have free and don’t wait to the last minute. They are able to do many things. Then there are also people who are not as detailed in their scheduling but  they know what thy have to do for their classes and their other commitments. Therefore although they may leave things for the last minute the work gets done and it is done properly for they were thinking about it prior to the deadline. Then there is a third type of person. Someone who does not structure there time in either of these ways. Some who is not able to keep track of deadlines and remembers things at the last minute.

When you get to college, because there is a lot of work to do for the classes, everyone will at least have to become the second type of organizer. For you will need to keep track of deadlines and the different requirements for the courses you take.

Your study habits and how much more time you need to dedicate to your studies depends on which of these general categories you fall into and what works for you.

There are some people who do better when studying before class, while there are others who do better while studying after an exam. There are those who can not study at home, but some may study better on the train or on the phone. Know what works for you, and unless you get 100’s on everything all the time, make sure you’re open to trying different methods for different classes.

Impression Management

This workshop was informative but they were just going over things about common sense. It wasn’t new information that most of us didn’t know. When meeting people, how do they view you? These points go for anyone. How articulate your speech is, how eloquent it is, your confidence, how you are dressed and other attributes that are quite similar to the ones that we judge people outside of the working environment.  The room was quite friendly. We had a guy that kept cracking jokes which certainly lightened up the room. The speaker was addressing issues, like spending alot of time on your blackberry, slouching, sleeping which can cause problems in working as many of us were doing so at the moment – I found that quite humorous. Other than that, she gave out pretty good information; however, I feel that most of us knew the points she was trying to make already. I’m not saying that the Starr Career Development Center is not helpful, they certainly are. I’ve been to other workshops and events such as the advanced interviewing workshop , I think that might have been with Theresa Conway, and the other corporate events they provide. They definitely provide many events that enhances the business related knowledge to the student body and provide many opportunties to students to gain a little more experience but this workshop was not one of my favorites.

And the Academy Award for Best Workshop goes toooooo……..

Impression Management.  [Insert clapping here]. I would like to thank my friends, my coworkers, my family, the Academy for giving me this award, God for allowing me to find my way to room 3-125.  OK. Now that I have your attention somewhat I’ll talk about what I liked about this workshop. This workshop was so informative and interesting in a friendly sort of manner. What I mean by this is that the speaker immediately took the initiative and made herself a friend to us quickly. She insisted on us calling her by her first name which created an atmosphere of equality in which we we’re treated as mature young adults which we are. By giving us the respect we wanted, we have her the respect she deserved and listened to what she said with open ears. I feel that her approach in talking to us was very successful. She proved how easy it was to create a good first impression and captivate the audience, and taught the audience by example the entireity of good impression management. A very subtle appoarch but one the audience, I felt, subconciously noticed and learned from. It was from doing this, that in my eyes, placed her above many other speakers I’ve previously heard from.

Let’s talk about ethics…the workshop, that is.

I must admit, I didn’t really expect to get much out of this workshop. I’m glad to say I was completely wrong. Similar to my Philosophy class, topics were raised that questioned our moral values. Would you report a co-worker spending company money on personal things? Would you accept personal gifts if it meant compromising your career? Things like this were discussed, and it was done in a very interesting way. The workshop was very interactive; upon hearing an issue, we would divide into two separate groups with different viewpoints and debate them. Since these topics brought our own personal views into the question, a lot of people were willing to speak, which led to rich discussion and productive argument. The workshop leader was very friendly in convincing people to participate, which didn’t even turn out to be necessary since everybody was fired up and ready to talk. This meeting was full of interesting people and thought-provoking exchanges of views, and I’m very glad to have attended it.

The Nature Of Landscape

B o r i n g. That is honeslty as much as I can say for this worsksop because I barely payed attention during the tour. I did try to pay attention at first, though, and I thought that some of the pieces were pretty interesting, but at random times I would tune out and go into my own little world. During the time that I actually did pay attention, I noticed that majority of the artwork were somehow related to nature. There wasn’t a huge variety to look at in this gallery, and, more surprisingly, I did not find a single piece that really stuck out to me or captured my interest. In my opinion, the pieces were fairly good, but just mediocre. Though I barely payed attention to the speaker, she was very nice and polite. I wish I could say that how she described the artwork was very informative and detailed, etc. Except my boredom and short attention span prevented me from actually participating, so I can’t even really tell. =/

Managing Relationships

As many would know by now, I am pretty shy, and more of an intovert. I am mentioning this because I think it is the main reason why I didnt enjoy this workshop so much. Maybe if I had more of a bold and outgoing personality, I would have enjoyed it more.

I personally don’t think that forcing new students to meet new people right on the spot is the most effective way to make new friends. Yes, it does help at some point (I did meet some new people, but it never went beyond the brief smile, firm handshake, and the basic, “hi, my name is”, or “nice to meet you”), but this activity still didn’t really do much for me.

Regardless, though, it was good to see the speaker making an effort to have the students interact with one another, and to break out of their comfort zones. Though she didn’t have the chance to go into any specific topic in detail, she covered the basics of family relationships, freindships, and romantic relationships, in terms of how we can deal with them in college. The speaker also had us discuss and share our own experiences or problems in relationships, and then she gave us a few tips on how to develop and maintain healthy relationships, which was definitely helpful.

Again, not my favorite workshop, but it was still pretty helpful and informative.

Club Fair

The club fair packed! I think it would’ve been actually pretty fun if I got to walk around instead of promoting for the Finance and Economics Society. By the way Latoya’s business fraternity was promoting pong. hahaha! Anyways, there were some pretty nasty poppers in that cypher that went down near the DJ. The thai ice tea made everyones teeth orange and there were alot of parties that were being promoted that day too. The USG one and the one near the TEAS. All in all, the event was filled with school spirit, really colorful, and very hype – I can’t say I didn’t enjoy myself.
