Mercedes Matters Art Gallery

The paintings of the late modern artist Mercedes Matters were on display this week and i took the opportunity to go. I thought i twas very interesting how her paintings evolved over the course of her life. Even though the basic concepts stay the same, she still retained the use of shapes such as triangles and rectangles she got more confident and was more messy with her brush strokes. Also as she got older her canvas’ got larger.

Impression Management

The impression management workshop seemed pretty self explanatory, most of what the presenter said seemed like common knowledge.  Dress appropriately to create the first image that people want to make of you, and speak accordingly and make sure there is eye contact with the person that you are communicating with.  I believe that the presentation wasn’t very well organized, because the presenter could have made many of his points with half the time that was actually taken.  Instead, he seemed to ramble on, and quite a few people actually fell asleep as well.  It was good as a review, but the presentation was way too long.

stress and anxiety

during this workshop, we did a exercise that i already did in psych class. we used a raisin and we had to feel it with our 5 senses…in the end, he told us to eat it and i didnt want to cause it felt disgusting. then they put me to sleep again like Albright did in psych class. i hate it when they do that cause i actually fall asleep and like i dont want to wake up anymore after that. it was a pretty good workshop because i was able to sleep but it also gave me some stress relieving tips like just taking a minute or two to relax muscles. i think it was a useful workshop that i would probably need in the future to relieve stress:D

Stress and Anxiety

This workshop I think was very helpful and right on time because we have so many exams and assignments due in the next couple of weeks that an exercise to reduce stress is very useful.  The first counselor introduced the concept of mindfulness which is an awareness that comes from purposely paying attention in the current moment and not judging the things you observe.  He explained a couple of exercises to develop mindfulness. One was the Five Things: See, Hear, Feel, this is the one I like most because its flexible meaning I could do anytime anywhere  I try to practice every time I remember. It which consists of picking five things you could see and describe them to yourself like if is something you have never seem before you could concentrate on the texture, color, shape, etc. then pick five different sounds that that are currently happening, and finally five things you could feel for example your weight on your feet, or the weight of your bag on your shoulder.    The second counselor introduced a form of assertiveness training called DEAR MAN it’s for when you want to ask for help and do not know how, and also when you want to say no and do not want to ruin a relationship by doing so.  Also he thought us a Progressive Muscle Relaxation this exercise consists on relaxing your muscles to get your mind to relax.

Math 2003 Workshop

The person who was teaching this workshop knew his stuff.  It was two hours and I was awake through all of it.  It was amazing how easy this guy made it seem.  In my one hour and forty minute class, I can’t keep my eye open.  Yet, I was actually involve in this workshop.  We went through almost everything in chapter two.  Many things that I didn’t understand were covered and I finally got them.  I learned more about derivatives, limits, domains, and more.  It was a very good workshop.  Hopefully, it helps me pass math.

Your Life, Your Money

I really enjoyed this workshop.  I thought it was a lecture but it turned out to be a movie.  It was sponsered by HSBC, which is my favorite  and soon to be bank.  It was made by PBS which I love since childhood.  The movie is about informing young people how to manage their money so that they don’t have a personal financial crisis.  It was very informative and it was very interesting.  Then there was a panel discussion for any questions.  I thought it was very well organize and that is the reason it became my favorite workshop of this semester.  Also, they gave us a lot of free stuff.  They gave me a usb bracelet, which was the highlight of my day.

Your Life, Your Money

Here’s the information of the latest workshop I went to.

Title: Your Life, Your Money

Category: Personal Enrichment

Date/Time: 11/11/2009 @ 6-8 pm

This workshop was sponsored by HSBC and the program, Your Life, Your Money, was produced by PBS and is aimed at informing people (specifically college students) about how to manage money. It gave a brief overview of how credit works and delved into topics such as the importance of retirement savings and insurance. I chose this workshop because I felt that this is information that I could use. If I have to do it, it might as well be useful to me, right? Anyways, this workshop didn’t take me out of my comfort zone but it gave me a lot of insight into how credit and debt works. I would definitely recommend this workshop to another student because there was a lot of free stuff and free food.  It was really worthwhile and I might actually skim through the book that they gave us. I was surprised at how many adults showed up but I really liked the learning environment and the panel discussion gave more in depth information regarding credit score, etc. It was very empowering.  This was, by far, one of the best workshops I’ve been to so far. And Robert, what’s your deal? You’re seriously everywhere, dude. lol jk

Club Fair

When I attended the Club Fair I was fairly surprised to see how lively and upbeat it was. There was music playing and very crowded. But I did learn a lot from the fair. I was able to meet with various representatives from clubs that i was interested in an clubs that I didn’t even know existed. The VITA club was one such club that I spoke to and didn’t know about. I was able to find out about their open house and attend. Another club that i found out about was the Billiards and Bowling Club. I was previously in my high school bowling team and really enjoyed it. So I spoke to the rep. and he explained how much fun they have in the club. The Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority also helped me understand how to join their sorority. I was surprised that most of their rush events had already past.

My favorite aspect of the club fair was the ability to join certain club’s email lists. I signed up to a couple because I realized that I may not be able to join this year but I can have information to sign up next year. However many clubs and organizations did not correspond with me. Another good part was the music and dancing of the fair. I thought it really made the crowd more responsive and excited.

Stress and Anxiety Reduction

This workshop had good intentions. It was both useful and important in helpingthe freshman’s cope and deal with their first year of college. They taught us great techniques which I have tried after attending this workshop. This is to practice mindfulness when doing a certain task. This is done to change the experience of the task and help you to relax. It is used in simple tasks such as brushing your hair or sitting down to eat something. You use each individual senses to evaluate what you are doing. So you would stop and feel the pressure of your body on the chair or take in the scent of what you are drinking. They recommend doing this 1 to 2 times a day. I have tried it and it does work to a certain degree. But with so many things going on and so many things to do I sometimes don’t concentrate as much as I would like to. Overall it was a good workshop to attend because I learned a valuable stress reliever.
