The career exploration workshop was about educating the freshmen Baruch students, about the different internships that students can obtain through Baruch College. Specifically the unpaid and paid internships students can obtain through the Career Development Center in Baruch. In addition we learned about Leadership Camps of companies that come to Baruch, from companies such as JP Morgan, Goldman Sacs, and the big four. We also learned about how we can find part time jobs and full time jobs through STARR SEARCH. A very helpful site in which students can obtain opportunities for jobs, internships, based on a profile that students create. It also helps students find out about job fairs. Lastly, we learned about writing specific and concise learning objectives and about the different types of resumes.
Career Exploration Workshop
Basic Interviewing Skills
Although this workshop had the fewest audience members of them all (4), the information provided was very useful in all accounts. Not only did we learn about what to do before, during, and after an interview with an employer, but also the internship opportunities available at the STARR career center. Miss Ingrid was very enthusiastic in detailing how to prepare for an interview. She mentioned to do research of the company, go to the interview well dressed, how to manage anxiety, etc. The fact that only four students (jomie, Jonathan, another girl, and myself) showed up gave us a chance to present ourselves in front of the speaker and other members. I think that the workshop was very useful and it is a shame that only 4 people went.
Ogilvy
At this event, we learned about the different departments of Ogilvy. We also learned about the different internships and how you can apply for those internships. they are a advertising company and they have clients such as Dove and Pepsi, etc. they work on a 35hrs a week which is considered full time. This workshop opened my eyes to other companies besides only accounting firms and I really want to work for Ogilvy one day. It almost made me want to go into advertising…almost. :]
Latino Heritage Month Gala
In this event the Unidad Latina gave awards to people and to departments that make sure the Latino Community in Baruch is taken into consideration. They awarded the Department of Black and Hispanic Studies for arranging activities for the Latino Community in our school. Also they recognized the work of Angela Anselmo, Director of SEEK Program at Baruch, becuase in the 1990’s when the Latino Community at Baruch was very small and all came in through the SEEK program she was the one that organized events for those Latinos and that help this students to accommodate in theschool even though they were a minority. They introduced this new program called Latino Youth that is recruiting students to help Latino students graduate from High School and get a college education, and help students be aware of the opportunities they have out there to be able to get a higher education. A City College alumni gave a speech about his life. He talked about the obstacles immigrants face here while trying to get educated and learning Englishat the same time. Also he talked about ways of being successful like taking one step at the time and only doing as many things as you could manage(not to overload yourself). I learned that only 30 percent of people who start college finish. Also that more than a 50 percent of Latinos drop out of college after their second year. I was very inspired to finish college and to always try to attain my goals regardless of what others think or say. Also there was Latino food and after i left they had a Tipico Band( Dominican Music) playing.
Freshman Open-house
The freshman open-house workshop was not only the first but also the least productive workshop. First, it was too overcrowded and for almost all, what mattered was to obtain a signature in the attendance passport. Secondly, not everyone received the papers provided which clearly described the requirements for Tiers I, II, and III. Finally, the speakers failed to make a clear statement as the crowd just wanted an easy in and an easy out. What I learned from the speaker though was the location of where to find information and counseling for class requirements and the rest of the info i got it from the paper.
Database Workshop
The workshop was very helpful in telling the students about the online resources available to all Baruch students. The database can be found in the baruch website by searching database. In the workshop we learned about the number of newspaper articles, magazine articles, or even excerpts from books that can be used as a form of citation for research papers. I think the workshop was very helpful and it served as a Personal Enrichment Workshop for me.
Student Services Fair
I am aware that it’s a bit late to blog about this fair, but I guess I still hold meaningful information that I can comment about. The fair was very useful and the representatives of the different service groups were efficient at eliminating all doubts I had about Baruch and its offices. I was able to ask several questions to the Study Abroad representative and obtained vital information on the steps needed to apply for the CUNY-sponsored program in Brazil. Also, I learned a lot about the way in which scholarships and grants are awarded/paid. Overall, the fair offered great opportunities to become informed about our school and make of the following years as fun and productive as possible.
