Introduction to Indian Dance

On October 1st 2009 I attended a small event held by a recently new club called Bindaas. This club was made to introduce Indian Dance to Baruch and hopes to create a dance team that can one day compete citywide. I have always been interested in Indian dancing. My sister take professional classes and now dances at a professional level. Even though I don’t take any classes or preform often, I do dance for fun and perform one in a blue moon. For me dancing is more of a hobby, that is why I was so interested in attending this event. I wanted to see what girls at Baruch thought of Indian dance and how it was going to be represented. It is very important to me to see that the culture i take pride in is being represented in a positive manner. This meeting not only showed me how little some girls knew about the Indian culture and dance but made me angry at the fact that these girls were not open to change or opinion. I came to college wanting to start a club with the same foundation, so when i heard that someone was already trying, I thought i might as well see if i can help. However, after attending this event i decided not to join. It was not what i was looking, but rather disappointing. The essence of Indian dance was lost and I could not be part of a club that is uneducated about what Indian Dance really is.
