I spent my Halloween with the United Sikh Association (USA) of Baruch. The event was called Sikh Scouts and consisted of the club members playing a role as mentors to little children from the community gurudwara (temple). Each member paired up with a kid for the whole day. We took the children to the Queens Zoo and lunch. Since it was Halloween both the mentors and children dressed up in costumes and trick o’ treated in the zoo. It was a fun filled day, however that was not the only purpose of this outing. The main reason this event was held, was to educate the younger generations of the Sikh religion, culture and people. Many of the younger kids don’t have pride in the way they look or who they are and that was a problem we wanted to change. By holding this event, it allowed the younger generation to learn and talk to us as role models. We were able to teach them and help them understand our culture. I think this experience was eye opening and enjoyable. It is one event that I feel should take place every semester and if possible with more mentors and children every time. It gives us as the big kids and chance to give back to our culture and Sikh community.
