On November 10th, 2009 I attended the Internship and Goal Setting Workshop provided by the STARR career development center. During the workshop the speaker spoke about internship opportunities that were currently out there from the big accounting firms, some banks, and marketing and media companies. This workshop was really helpful because it provided me with the information that I will need to get an internship which may eventually lead to a job. While I attended this workshop I also learned the importance of goal setting in my life and in my college career.
Blood Drive
On Wednesday, December 2nd, I attended a Blood drive for the Global-Awareness workshop. My appointment was at 2:00 and it went relatively quick. The nurses and attendedants were very nice and it was very organized because so many kids gave blood.
Coat/Toy Drive
This drive was to collect coats and toys for people that need it. I just sat at a table on the second floor for an hour looking after the box. But then there was one person that gave an old coat.
Creating Your Own Majors
On December 3, I went to a career exploration workshop where we can make our own majors. There were four speakers talking to us about their experience while they were processing their applications. For some of the speakers it was hard for them to get the department’s professors to sign. Creating your own major is kind of complicated but it is good on your resumes because people that are hiring would find it interesting but you have to let them notice in and get to tell them about it and why they should hire you out of everyone else applying.
Coat Drive
On Dec 3rd I manned the coat drive table being ran by Freshmen Seminar. Although it might seem quite boring it felt good knowing that these coats were going to people who need them. It is no secret that the city has many homeless people and people in need so a coat drive is a great way to help the less fortunate out. I learned a lot about Baruch students simply by the fact that coats were in the box. Maybe the person just wanted to get ride of the coats, but giving them to the coat drive is a perfect way to do it. You free your closet of clutter and help a needy person out at the same time. By seeing the coats in the box it showed that Baruch students care about others and do not just selfishly go on with their lives pretending that others do not need our help to survive.
Clothing & Toy Drive
This was for the global and community awareness workshop that was needed. Basically, I watched over two boxes. This event was held to collect clothing and toys for the needy. I was there for a total of an hour. Someone actually brought in a bag of clothes today! Yay! (:
Blood drive
So today I donated blood and it went very smoothly. I answered some yes/no questions like everyone else, the nurse measured my iron level and took my blood pressure and I was pretty much on my way. The two things I hate most about giving blood is waiting for the nurse to stick in the needle and when the needle pierces the skin. After that, everything was ok. While giving blood, you are instructed to squeeze this grip they give you every few seconds. When everything was over, I went to replenish myself with juices, water and an assortment of cookies they provide. This blood drive was well prepared and they were all nice.
Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective
This workshop was held on 135 22nd street. Basically it was a tour of Mercedes Matter’s art work. The gallery was separated into 3 sections: her early, middle, & late works. Some of the paintings were interesting, like the still life, the tour guide told us she worked on one piece for 20 years! When she started off painting, she painted exactly what she saw in real life and as her work progressed, the paintings became much more abstract. Overall, the tour was a little boring.
