Visiting the art gallery was pretty boring. After waiting in a long line to get in, we were showed a few art pieces, which did not interest me (nor, from the looks of it, anyone else there). The pieces ranged from her childhood works to the pieces she made after she was schooled in art. I didn’t enjoy the paintings because they were of ordinary things…tables, fruits.
Club Fair
I went to the club fair a while ago, I didnt spend much time there. I thought it was way too crowded and chaotic. It was beneficial to those that were looking for a club to join though.
Immigration
The workshop was interesting. The speaker did not know however that other people besides those of the discussion panel might come, so he was not prepared for us. That said, the speaker did say some interesting things about Mexican immigration and he wasn’t afraid to talk about stereotypes. Not really sure that I learned anything I hadn’t known before, but this workshop was still the best choice to fulfill the requirement.
Building and Maintaining Relationship in College
The Building and Maintaining Relationships in College workshop was held on October 8th 2009. When I first heard about this workshop, I thought it was about how to balance your school life with your personal life. Even though my assumption was right in a way, it was just a tiny part of what the workshop was really about. We discussed the importance of all types of relationships people have thought out their college life. Family, friends, personal, networking, and professional relationships. All of which, that can either support or distract a student in college in my opinion. A very big part of college is networking and getting to sell yourself to a crowd of people. I personally did not have a problem with meeting new people and introducing myself, because I think I am a open friendly person. Also because I love meeting new people and socializing. The workshop was interesting and useful, however I believe I had already known what the lady was saying. But I do think it was a good topic of conversation and would actually enjoy discussing the importance with some close friends.
Club Fair
Getting to the club fair workshop was a mission. I looked around knowing that the gymnasium was going to be stuffed with all the new freshmen. As I walked around, I was able to see the different types of clubs Baruch had to offer. It actually surprised me to see so many booths. At first I was looking for clubs that I can potentially join. So i went up to the club U.S.A (United Sikh Association) and club India, since i had friends that already were part of these clubs. It was fun to see what the clubs were actually made of. It was also interesting to see the amount of pride member’s of the club took in their organizations. While walking around, I saw people holding up signs, trying to bring people to their table. Most clubs either had food or candy to give out, which I think was a smart way to attracting new freshmen to their club booth. Even the workshop was annoying to get into and move around, I still think it was a good experience because it sorta brought the entire school together for me. It made it feel less like boring everyday, going to school and going back home.
Immigration seminar
The other day on 11/23 I attended the Global Awareness workshop on immigration and mexican cultures. This was a very interesting workshop, though I found it hard to follow. It is possible that it cofused me because the speaker spoke with the assumption that the audience was aware of his backstory on his upcoming novel about mexican and african youth. Regardless, what I did learn was interesting and I am pleased that I decided to attend.
Personal enrichment workshop
I have been going to the Chinese Christian Fellowship for the personal enrichment workshop. I have been in the club since the beginning of the school year. During the process I have started to routinely read the bible. Also I have been learning to read chinese which I wasn’t able to do before, so I feel that it is very beneficial to be able to learn my own language through fellow classmates. Although its hard to catch on to the singing in chinese and reading people have been helping me learn.
Global Art Tour (Mercedes Matter)
Jurgis, Francis, Bryan and I attended this art workshop in the 23rd St. Building where this lady gave small groups a brief idea on what Ms. Matter painted throughout her life. She painted very unique paintings. There were many different kinds of paintings there, one section there were different paintings with tables and fruits. The workshop was so boring that no one payed much attention to what the tour guide was saying. Other than that, it was very well organized and displayed to us in a fashionable manner.
Mediating Conflict
This workshop was taken place on Thursday, November 12th in room 3-190 in the vertical campus building. As the title states, this workshop was mainly about finding solutions to not only academic but also personal problems encoutered in college, especially for us, freshmen who tend have more problems due to the hardships to adapt to a new environment fulfilled with pressure in all academic, economic and social aspects. On the other hand, we also talked about the importance of ethics and honestly in Baruch which is the key to suceess. The speaker of the workshop was one of the many peer mediators in Baruch. She made sure to let us all know that in case of a dispute, whether it is verbal or eventually becomes physical, we should go to her so that she could try to resolve the conflict.
