Ah. Arts at Baruch. To be honest, one of the most boring if not THE most boring workshop ever made up. No hard feelings Jenny? =) Anyway, there is nothing special about this workshop besides the fact that it felt like a mini trip of boredom hosted and narrated by a robot. The “tour guide” as I will call her, basically gave nothing more than the history of the painter Mercedes Matter. To be honest, her paintings are not even interesting. Its a bunch of lines and weird shaped things that I don’t even know. A triangle supposedly represents a desk…to her..somehow. To me it looks like a 5 year old got angry and splattered paint all over a white canvas. I mean honestly there is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING good to talk about this workshop. The line was super long, the tour was short and uninteresting and it was just a dull and boring workshop. At least she could have handed out free stuff to please us. But no. A bunch of boring paintings representing some unknown ideas. Pardon me for my wrong judgment of art, but honestly I’ve seen paintings from various painters, like Van Gogh and Matisse and they seem much more interesting. I’m not saying she’s a bad artist, but its just no too interesting…Overall, a boring workshop.
Personal Enrichment Workshop
To begin with, the personal enrichment workshop was a pain getting in to. First, you had to register for it, and some people who registered were not able to get in. Secondly, the room was way too small. They could have used a bigger room to accommodate a bigger crowd and it would have been much better, interactively and safety wise. The workshop itself was pretty lengthy, around an hour. It wasn’t too boring, but it had its ups an downs. It was an open discussion about various topics about people and their personalities and reasons they get along and so on. We talked about openhandedness and how we accepted other people’s viewpoints and how some didn’t. Those who were close minded had a lack of trust. People accept ideas while others choose not to due to mistrust or lack of trust. We also talked about how people get along and why they do it. Opening up relationships and conflicts. How people ignore people who cause conflicts. We also talked about various issues that should be brought up at Baruch. Some guy mentioned something about people not flushing the urinals….weird. Anyway, the workshop was pretty helpful and informative. The only downside was the packed room and unorganized entry and which people where allowed in.
Academic Enrichment
The Academic Enrichment workshop that I attended was at the SACC center. It was basically a 2 hour session with a tutor in 3 types of math courses. The one I took was Math 2003. Other sessions were in higher types of math. The workshop overall was very good. The tutor, Gavin, was very nice and enthusiastic. He encouraged people to ask questions and wrote many problems on the board for us to practice. He also to a lot of problems from the final exam. In the end I was very pleased and actually learned something from the workshop. The tutoring, simply put, was sufficient, and the amount of people in the room was little too. So everyone had a chance to ask a question or participate.
Career Exploration
The workshop I went to was called, “Resume Writing.” It was in room 3215, from 12:30 – 1:30. It started off late because they couldn’t get the projector on time, it also took forever for them to hook everything up. In the end, the projector didn’t even work. The presenter was also a little…moody? She was really strict and made the workshop no fun at all. However, something that surprised me was that all the jobs that I held during my years in high school, could not be put on my resume anymore. She said I had to take everything out and I felt so devastated! I had already gone to Resume Rush(which I think should count as a workshop!) but the lady I spoke with didn’t tell me I needed to do that. So I don’t know who believe. I probably won’t take it out. If I were to rate this workshop on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best, I would give it a 2.5.
Personal Enrichment
I want to start off by saying that they need more workshops! Roar! Also, I tried getting into one, but then they told me I couldn’t go in because it was full. I leave for 10 minutes and my friend tells me they let 20 people in. So not fair!
Well, they finally made a new one named, “Values, Pressure, & Choosing Majors.” Took place in room 3185 from 3 -4. We had to fill out a chart. It was about what the world associated us with, what we wanted, why we wanted to follow a certain career path. These topics and how it changes depending on our religion, sexual orientation, social class, etc. Then there was another chart that talked about our long term and short term goals in life. The charts were actually pretty confusing. I think they should probably find another way to format it. The presenters seemed really passionate about what they were talking about though. Overall I thought the workshop was okay.
Career Exploration
The career workshop was well organized with a slide show presentation. It was somewhat helpful; we learned that personality affects which job is best for you and saw a hexagon chart with careers that best fit each personality type. The information wasn’t new, but I learned about the starr search website, which was helpful in my search for a part time job.
Academic Enrichment- Sotomayor Panel
I attended this academic enrichment workshop on 9/22/09. Sorry im blogging so late, I was just too lazy. Well this was basically about Sonia Sotomayor and how she achieved success regardless of her environmental drawbacks, like financially and her environment was filled with crimes and drugs and all of that. She is the first hispanic judge and has pride in that. I liked this workshop because it was nice to see a women talking about how far she came and the struggles she went through. I’m very feminist and i liked this workshop.
STUDENT LIFE-
On Sept 17 I attended the ‘Fresh Start’ workshop. It was… pretty chaotic. There were so many people that showed up that the line/mass of freshmen stretched across the hallway and blocked the elevators. My friends and I waited for an hour and traveled ten feet. Eventually the advisors got several lecture rooms open and funneled us off.
Once everyone finally settled down, one advisor came to our room and started the workshop. Most of the things she talked about were repeats of the orientation, but that was probably to stress it’s importance. Her speech was rushed because it took so long to get all of the freshmen organized. Also, they ran out of food way before they got to us.
Managing Relations in College
I went to this personal enrichment workshop on October 8th in the multi-purpose room. It was really boring but they just spoke about how to keep your relationships managed and balanced, like personal or professional. How to manage your time and all of that stuff. I chose to attend this workshop because I was being bombarded with work from every angle and it just seemed that there were too less hours in a day to finish everything. I learned a few tips but thats it.
