I thought it would be easy to choose a song and I had many songs in mind, but I realized that I choose my favorite songs based on the melody and not the lyrics. In fact, I barely pay attention to the lyrics. Most of my favorite songs are love songs and I feel that love songs do not carry much meaning in them. Usually, the lyrics either portray love as a positive thing (love is beautiful) or as a negative thing (love is painful) and I feel that love songs are pretty much straight forward (at least the ones that I have in my Music files).
Originally, I chose “100 Years” by Five for Fighting but I feel that I wouldn’t have much to say about this song. After searching over the weekend, I settled (or so I thought) with “I’m Gay,” by Bowling For Soup, which I think would be a great song to analyze. However, the music video of this song led me to find the song that I am settling with (permanently!). The song I chose is called “Everyone’s a little bit racist,” by Avenue Q. The meaning of the song is exactly as the title implies: Everyone is a little bit racist. Reading the lyrics, I find myself agreeing with them. It is not only that I like the lyrics but I also really like their style. Avenue Q is a group that performs musicals, addressing various issues such as “sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn” through Muppets (Avenue Q). According to their main website, Avenueq.com, they promise to adults who bring their “teenagers to Avenue Q, they’ll think you’re really cool. (Avenue Q).” I would think so too.
I think the lyrics are promising (there’s 7 pages of it if expanded) and the issue itself can assist in making my paper worthwhile. The style of Avenue Q is also very distinct so I can discuss the irony behind it.
