Hi, I’m not going to post up my entire paper. Just the first paragraph and then a summary of the body.
Many parents who do not have the time to watch or to accompany their children find ways to keep their children busy. One of the easiest ways to keep their children entertained is by placing their kids in front of a television. The children can enjoy a great variety of programs while parents can tend to their own business. But parents may not always be aware of what their children are watching. By allowing their children to watch television as a recreational activity, they may be exposing them to things that may be inappropriate for their age. The programs and advertisements that air on television all carry messages and ideas of their creator. A television show is the result of the medley of ideas of other people put together for a specific audience. Their target audience is key; the producers aim to use all sorts of tricks and gadgets to draw in viewers. And if it means resorting to violence, sex, and other touchy topics, then so be it. When children watch television, even programs that are deemed appropriate for their age, they may still be exposed to inappropriate content. One particular television series, The Family Guy, with its inappropriate material, has caused much controversy. The show, centered around an irrational, chubby father, his wife, their three children, and a talking dog, is just for laughs. Many people, however, feel that Family Guy has crossed the invisible line, marked ‘appropriate humor.’ Although I agree that Family Guy has its fair share of mature material, it is ultimately up to the parents to take action for their children.
My Body includes/will include: (1) Short intro of Fam Guy and its content (2) Intro to one particularly controversial scene (3) Analysis of the scene; how does it sell, what makes the characters so attractive, etc (4) What do critics have to say about Family Guy? How Family Guy producers defend themselves? (5) a study on how TV may not affect a child’s behavior (6) Parent’s roles in their children’s lives + Steps Parents should take to ensure appropriate viewing for their children. (7) summary/conclusion
Questions for those of you kind enough to help me:
1) Does my thesis work? Or is there still a “so what” factor?
2) Is there anything else I should include in my body? Or is there anything I should exclude?
3) Am I being specific enough? Or is my paper looking more like a book? (Not that It is long at all…but I’ll update you guys if it doesn’t come out to the required 7-10 pages.
Originally I was going to approach this paper with a negative view (Family guy is bad! Don’t let your children watch it.) But after watching (too many) clips of Family Guy, and reading reviews (with arguments from both sides), I think it’s better if I take a more pro-family guy approach.
Suggest away, guys!
