Today I participated in a STARR Center for Career Development workshop titled “Internship & Goal Setting.” I garnered a lot of information from this workshop, including when Baruch’s upcoming internship-related events are taking place, what companies offer leadership programs and internship opportunities, and other services that the Center for Career Development offers. Everyone in the workshop received a small workbook that contained a lot of helpful information and exercises. Just from flipping through it I can see topics ranging from how to answer questions at an interview to how to write a cover letter. I can definitely see myself reading through this workbook and doing some of the exercises in the future.
Student Services Fair
On October 13th, I attended the Student Services Fair. There were a number of office representatives and seminar leaders present at the workshop. Our goal at the workshop was to meet and learn about the different services offered by the offices at Baruch. We were also given a card, which would be marked as we met with the various representatives. I got to interact with the representative of the Registrar’s office, the Financial Aid office and the Honor’s Program coordinator just to name a few. There were also free giveaways at the fair, which grabbed everyone’s attention and made it harder to get through the fair.Overall the workshop was a learning experience. I was able to get a better insight on how the different offices functioned and what their requirements were.
FRO Internships and Career Planning Workshop
On November 10, I attended the workshop on Career Plan. The workshop was lead by Theresa Conway and was mainly focused on the familiarization with the facilities offered by the STARR Development Center. The workshop coordinator was also the director for internships at Baruch and hence we were able to get a better insight on how STARR development Center could help us find internship, leadership programs, and jobs. At the seminar we also talked about resume writing and how to prepare for an interview. The coordinator helped us narrow down a list of probable work objectives and working environments as she guided us through the internship booklet. The workshop also made me aware of a lot of major companies that come to Baruch and the events that are held all throughout the year.
Overall the workshop was very informative on the services available at Baruch. It helped me understand the importance of keeping a good GPA and being involved in club activities and events. The coordinator also brought to our attention how competitive the current job market was and encouraged us to take advantage of the facilities offered by the STARR center.
Personal Enrichment
On October 13, 2009, I visited the Student Services Fair in room NVC 1-107. Here I learned about the various services that college offers to Baruch students. I learned a little more about the STARR Career center, the Athletics Department, the Registrar and the Bursar. I also learned that there are health and child care services that are provided at little cost to us as students as well. I found this to be informative, but the crowding made it difficult to approach a booth and talk to the representatives.
Career Exploration
On November 5, 2009, I went to a career exploration workshop in the room NVC 3-165. This workshop focused on making a good first impression and how it is essential in today’s job market. The lecture described how to make a good first im-pression such as bbeing on time, dressing for the occassion, and paying attention. It also talked about how making a bad first impression is not necessasrily the end of the world. It discussed how if your first impression is bad, you can still change the person’s view of you by acting better.
Academic Enrichment
On September 17, 2009, I went to the Freshman Reception workshop for new Baruch students. There was a large amount of students waiting to go in to get the refreshments and the paper that was being given out. The wait took a while and we were quickly funneled into the room, got the papers and signatures and left. Some say that there was a lecture, but not all of us received the lecture since there were just too many of us there to fit into the room and get the oral part of the information.
Freshman Reception
On September 18th I attended my very first workshop in room 5-215 called Freshman Reception. Many attended this workshop thinking it was mandatory causing an overflow of freshman in the hallway, lining up to enter. The huge group was broken up and separated into different rooms. I was led to a lecture room and academic adviser Ms. Brown gave us important packets about Baruchs Tiers and the many programs the school offers. Much of what we learned was explained to us in L.U.C.Y., an online video created by Baruch.
Tier I and II includes all the core curriculum courses while Tier III includes a course at the 3000 level. Tier I is about communication and quantitative skills and includes the SimNet exam which tests our Excel abilities. Tier II is about Arts and Sciences. Ms. Brown mentioned how hard it is to get into a science class and we usually have to wait until senior year before taking science. I’ve already fulfilled my psychology requirement due to my score in the AP exam last year. Learning about Baruchs many different requirements encourages me to keep on top of all my credits and courses. I hope to have a successful experience here at Baruch college!
Club Fair
On September 24th I went to the club fair located in Baruchs auxiliary gym. It was a great way to learn about many of the different clubs at Baruch. Many clubs offered goods to attract freshman and others who wished to join a group. I received candy, cake, and cookies- I was in heaven! There was a large variety of clubs to choose from and it was definitely a difficult choice. I wrote down my e-mail address and signed up for news about upcoming events for many different clubs.
The breakdancing club drew the most attention. With their large speakers and popular music blasting through, the crowd continued to grow. I was a little too short for the crowd and couldn’t see how good they were but I’m sure they were really good because the cheers were almost deafening. Throughout the full two hour break we had, the crowd didn’t let down one bit. It was full of people to the very last minute possible, we all wanted to get the most out of this opportunity.
Academic Enrichment
On September 13th I attended the Academic Enrichment workshop at the Freshmen Reception. At the very beginning I was given packet of documents, which took me through the list of classes that I would have to take over the course of my program at Baruch. I was able to speak with Sarah Wagner, who was one of the many advisors present at the workshop. She helped me go through the list of classes that were required and helped me understand the differences between the Tier 1,2 and 3 categories. moreover I was able to go through a list of Minors that were available at Baruch and she helped me narrow down a few based on the major I have planned to take. She was also able to go over my classes and helped me figure out what requirements I still need to fulfill.
Overall the workshop gave me an idea of what classes I should be taking over the next few semesters. The advisor was very helpful and made planing for future semesters all the more easier. Now going to the advisement center makes it easier as I know the advisors. I know when I am faced with a question regarding my classes I can always return to familiar faces.
