Arts at Baruch

I attended the Arts at Baruch workshop held at the Mishkin Gallery on November 3rd. At the gallery I was introduced to the art work by Mercedes Matter. Our work shop coordinator introduced us to a number of her paintings dating from her early works in her teen years to work she worked on a few years before her death. Mercedes Matter was famous for her paintings of abstract art. The coordinator also introduced us to her oil paintings where she uses a rich contrast of vibrant colors and her passion for still life painting. The coordinator reminded us that in order to understand Matter’s paintings we should not compare them to realistic objects rather to see through them and identify the abstract objects present in the paintings. On closer observation, I was able to identify a few fruits Matter’s had painted in one of her recent oil paintings.

I was certainly able to appreciate Mercedes Matter’s passion for abstract art. She was able to bring out still life images with vibrant colors. The coordinator indicated that the use of vibrant colors was used to indicate seasons and subject matters. The workshop was a truly enlightening experience and provides a window for art lovers to appreciate art right at the college.

Student Life

On October 13th, I attended the Student Services Fair. Each table had its own share of information to give. One of the representatives told me everything about the student life at Baruch and I thought it was fascinating to hear about all of the facilities that exist some of which I’ve never even heard of. Something that I thought was funny was how during finals many students actually sleep over in the library which does sound convenient

Career Exploration

On September 17th, I attended the Freshman Open House. There was a large crowd for this one and I even came early which I thought was amusing. I was only able to spend a brief time with the counselor for this one but I must admit that she did a good job in telling us things that we should know as freshman. After the discussion we would get folders with informative documents. After a while the folders ran out so I got mine on the following Monday.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

On October 20th, I attended the Academic Enrichment Workshop. The counselor I worked with at the workshop explained common core curriculum for Baruch and the pre-requisites for the three schools within Baruch. She pretty much reiterated the L.U.C.Y. online tutorial but it was a good refresher and I’m sure it helped the people who didn’t do the tutorial. It helped me to chart the course that I will follow in the future.

The counselor did a good job at explaining everything and it clarified and doubts I had about certain things. I’m glad I was able to find out what I need in order to apply to the Zicklin School of Business. This workshop was great in helping me to decide what classes I will attend next semester.

Academic Enrichment

On October 13th, I attended the Student Services Fair. There were representatives from all of the Student Services at about 20 tables and they were ready to answer any questions that we might have. After answering out questions they would give us a hole in our punch card. We were supposed to get at least 10 hole punches before our books could be signed. I went around and asked the representatives from the services that were of the most interest to me and they were able to inform me of many things that I never thought about.
The STARR Career Development Center was one of the best things that I learned about at the fair. It helps the students with virtually anything that is career related. I will definitely be using this in the future. I thought the free Gillette razors were a nice touch and I’m sure that table got some extra attention.

JOB FAIR

On September 8, I attended the job fair. I was one of the first group of people to get into the fair, therefore I didn’t have to suffer on the long line like I did for the club fair. I saw a lot of  jobs in the fair that I was interested in. I signed up for about six of them. However, I never heard back from any of those departments, which was unfortunate. Overall, it was a great experience because I got to learn a lot about different departments and each of their jobs.

CLUB FAIRR !!

On September 24, I was hoping to check out the club fair and perhaps find a club that might interests me. I met up with a couple of my LC block people and headed out the the club fair. There were a long line and it took us around ten minutes to get up to the front. The lady who sat at the entrance told us to swipe our ID as attendance. However, I felt like leaving as soon as I got into the fair. The whole room was PACKED! Each of the tables was crowded with people. I couldn’t even see the table because of the crowd. We wander around the fair for another five minutes until we left for lunch. It was amazing that we spent more time on the line than in the actual fair.

Accounting Networking Luncheon

I attended the Accounting Networking Luncheon today November 5th, during club hours. It was hosted by numerous clubs such as VITA, Baruch Accounting Society, Ascend, NABA and STARR. It gives the opprotunity for students to network with business professionals from midzied to well known accounting firms such as PwC and KPMG. At the beginning, there was a a formal portion of the meeting in which every club and organizations gave a warm welcome to the business professionals in attendance and to tell us a little about their respective organizations. It was really informative and the entire event was extremely beneficial. Eventhough I couldnt network today since I had to stay by the table in which I was a campus rep in, I learned many tips on networking and interviewing. Overall it was a fascinating experience.

Club Fair

On September 24, I attended the club fair. I wanted to go to the club fair so that I would be able to find a compatible club for me to join. But once I got to the club fair every single table was crowded, the entire room was very loud, and it was hard to hear anything over the music that was playing. I moved through the crowds to find a club that I might be interested in joining, but it was hard to get to the representatives. I found one club, ( I can’t remember the name), and asked the person at the table to explain what they did, but I had no idea what the lady was talking about, so I just took a pamphlet and moved on. I did join the United Sikh Association, because of my friend’s insistence that I didn’t even have to attend the meetings (I did attend their meeting). After looking at all the tables, I wanted to see the performance that was going on in front of the room, but there were so many people crowded around that I gave up. Soon I got tired of moving through the crowd and decided to call it quits. I hope that next time the organizers of the fair would tone down on the music. It would have made it a whole lot easier to get to the club representatives and actually learn about the clubs.

Small Talk, Big Deal Part II

On October 27th, I attended a workshop, sponsored by the STARR Career Development Center. It was a workshop on how to make small talk. The workshop was led Wendy Hayman. She explained to us what small talk is and why it is important. Small talk is a way to “connect with people for fun and business.” It is important because it is an ice breaker and helps to establish a level of comfort. It is important to be relaxed and to look “authentic”, so that you can be approachable. Ms. Hayman explained that even shy people can become masters of small talk, all they need is a little bit of practice. Then, Ms. Hayman explained that small talk helps people to network and it helps people to find opportunities in all aspects of life, for example, work, love and school. The rest of the workshop she gave us tips on how to schmooze and how to conduct small talk at interviews and other social gatherings. I found the last part of the workshop to be very helpful, how to conduct small talk at interviews. It was good to know how to conduct myself at an interview. The rest of the workshop was fine, and to help us with practicing, Ms. Hayman had everyone at the workshop go around and introduce themselves to at least three other people they haven’t met before.  We also got into groups to answer questions on how to make small talk in different situations. It was a nice way to meet everyone present at the workshop.
