Student Services Fair

On October 13th, I attended the Student Services Fair. Representatives from all the Student Services were present at the fair and they were there to answer any questions that freshmen students may have. We were required to visit ten stations at the fair to get a signature on our passports, so I visited ten stations and asked them any questions that I had. I was particularly interested in the Study Abroad program and TEAM Baruch. The main question I had concerning the study abroad program was whether I needed to know the native language of the country where I will be living, and the representative told me that I did not need to know the native language, but I might be required to take a language class. If I were to go for a winter session then it would be of no use for me to take a language course, since the entire stay would only be for three weeks. But if I went for an entire semester, then I would probably be required to take a course. I was really hoping to find out more about TEAM Baruch, but there was no representative at the station while I was there, so I went to the Student Life office to find out. They gave me a brief description and instructions on how to apply.

While I was at the fair I found out about the STARR Career Development Center and all the services they offer. The Center helps students with internships, resumes, and offers career related workshops. I was not particularly interested in their services for now, but I know that I will definitely use their help in the future. The fair was pretty okay. The only thing was that it got crowded after a while and it was harder to get to the representatives with so many people crowding around the tables.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

On October 20th, I attended a workshop with my learning community. There was a counselor at the workshop who explained to us the common core curriculum for Baruch and the pre-requisites for the three schools within Baruch. It was basically a reiteration of the L.U.C.Y. online tutorial. I had watched the tutorial twice, once in June and once before I attended this workshop. It was very helpful, in that it gave me an idea of what I would have to complete in my years at Baruch, and watching the tutorial helped to think of questions that I would be able to ask the counselor. I felt that the counselor did a good job at explaining everything and it was very useful for me. It gave me an idea of what I would have to do to graduate from Baruch, and also what I would have to do to get into the Zicklin School of Business. After the counselor finished explaining everything she looked over our mock schedules and saw whether it was appropriate for the next semester. Now I know what I will be taking next semester, and the workshop was very helpful in helping me choose my classes.

Student Life

On September 17 I attended the Freshman Reception Workshop. This was the first workshop I went to and pretty much all the students there wanted to get the signature and get out. There was a huge amount of kids that attended the workshop, hundreds more than they expected that they had to split us up into different rooms. They simply started sending us into all the empty rooms that they could find on that floor. Simply stated, we were being corralled like cattle.

Originally, we were each supposed to receive a pamphlet with all the material they were going to cover during the workshop but they didn’t expect so many of us showing up that nobody in the room I was sent to got it. A few different people came in apologizing for the inconvenience, and because there was so many people the workshop only lasted about five minutes. The instructor talked very quickly, reiterating a few of the points we were told during freshman orientation, like join clubs and do internships, but other than that they let us go and signed our books. What was originally supposed to be a long and informative workshop ended up being the complete opposite.

Freshman Open House

This was the very first workshop that I attended and when I got the Center for Academic Advisement there was a line out the door and past the elevators. When I got into the workshop they told me they had run out of folders and I had to come back and get one later. When I got the folder it included the common core curriculum, the requirements for the Zicklin School of Business, how to calculate your GPA and major and minor information. This folder was very helpful because it helped me to see what I need to accomplish for my major, minor and what requirements I need to complete to get into Zicklin.

Academic Enrichment

On October 13 I attended the Annual Student Services Fair. At the fair, there were representatives from many different programs throughout Baruch. There were representatives from the Bursar’s Office, the Health Center, the Honors College, the Center for Academic Advisement and more. The purpose of the fair was to go around to as many different representatives and ask them questions we had about the program, or center or whatever it was. In total, we had to go to at least ten different representatives and ask them questions. In return, they would punch a hole in the sheet they gave us to mark that we asked them questions and then we were allowed to get credit for the event.
When I went to the fair I was interested in finding out the answers to some of my questions, such as, what are the CPE test and SIMNET test, what STARR Career Development Center is and how it can help us and more. Therefore, I went to the Testing and Evaluation representatives, and the STARR representatives so that I can get the answers to my questions. I went to all the representatives I had questions or concerns for. Overall, it was a good experience because I figured out the answers to all my questions and it really helped. It’s a lot more convenient going to a fair where all the different offices or program representatives are than going to each individual center throughout the school.

Student Life

On September 24th I attend the club fair and saw the clubs that Baruch had to offer such as different fraternities, sororities, and the different honor societies. Two of the tables I visited where the Accounting Society and The Golden Key Society tables, at these tables I got to meet either a club member or the president to of the club. When I spoke to some of the members of this club they were very helpful because they gave me some insight into what the club does at what they are about. Towards the end of the gym there was a dance group performing and a large crowd began to gather luckily I was one of the first couple of people to get there so I got a pretty good view of the performance. After this I began to go around the different tables and gathered fliers from the clubs that I thought i would be interested in. This was a good experience because I got to see the various clubs offered at Baruch.

Academic Advisement Workshop

On October 20th I attended an academic advisement workshop where the speaker explained to us the various requirements to graduate from Baruch. Before I attended this workshop I watched the online video L.U.C.Y which was very helpful in telling me the various courses I had to take to complete the common core curriculum at Baruch. The speaker at the workshop began by telling us about Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III courses . These Tiers have to be completed before we can graduate from Baruch and you do not need to complete Tier I to go on to Tier II or Tier II to go on to Tier III. In addition, to this the speaker also spoke about the three school at Baruch and the different requirements for them. Another topic the speaker told us about was the different degree requirements beyond the core curriculum that we need to complete to get a  BBA, BA, or BS. I found the speaker very helpful because she thoroughly went through each Tier and explained to us which courses we would be eligible to take in our fall semester and explained to us in detail some of the course we would have to take to complete our degree.

Student Services Fair

On Tuesday, October 13th I attended the student services fair where I learned about some of the services that Baruch offered to its students. Some of these services included the Bursar’s Office, Financial Aid, Registrars  Office, and Study Abroad. At the Bursar’s Office table I learned about payment plans and what to do if you have financial aid but it is not on your account. At the Financial Aid table I learned about how much financial aid I could receive if I was interested in taking courses in the winter or summer semesters. While I was at the Registrars Office table I learned about how i could drop a class, how to register for a class, and how to obtain a copy of my transcript.  At the Study Abroad table I learned what countries I could study in, if i could use my financial aid to study abroad and what courses i could take. My overall experience at the Student Services Far was great because I got to learn all about the various services that Baruch has to offer .

Library Tour

On September 1st our mentor, Sonali Daga, brought us to the library for a short tour. She basically explained everything near the entrance of the library. She told us about getting our own study rooms and also explained the different sections of the library. When you walk in, towards the right of the library is the quiet section with couches where people go to study or relax and just read. To the left is the desk where you would be able to speak to a librarian. There, you could also borrow a laptop, calculator, or software, or renew a book. The first floor of the library has mostly standing computers while the second floor has desks for group studying and more computers. She also mentioned the friendliness of the librarians and how they’re always willing to help students.

Library Workshop

On September 18th I attended two different workshops. After my freshman reception workshop ended I stumbled upon a library workshop. At the workshop the librarian taught us how to use many of Baruchs plethora of resources. Although we had a short library tour during seminar, I learned about things in depth in this workshop. I learned about study rooms and borrowing laptops and calculators. I also learned that we can renew our books online to avoid late fees and we may borrow as many books as we wish.

The librarian was very friendly and she emphasized that all of Baruchs librarians are always willing and eager to help. She introduced to us a live chat available to students who wish to speak with a librarian at any time of the day. This will be useful when doing a research project. There are many programs and software available for students to use and borrow. For example, if you want to study for the SimNet exam, they have Excel on the computers for you to practice. They also have CDs available to students so they may borrow it and practice at home. Although the librarian didn’t want to brag, she mentioned Baruch had one of the best libraries in the city!
