Changing America – Sonia Sotomayor

On September 22nd, I attended a workshop with some friends. In this workshop there were three different speakers, all educating me with wonderful facts about Sonia Sotomayor, whom I hadn’t heard of before. I learned about the journey that led Ms. Sotomayor to be the first female Hispanic on the Supreme Court. She fought through many hardships, including sexism and racism, to be where she is today. She has made quite an impact on American history.

Sonia Sotomayor had to fight many obstacles during her college years. She attended Princeton University but at that time it was only the third year female students were accepted. It was only natural that many people, especially men, hadn’t accepted this new change. It was her determination and hard work that helped her through the years. She has a very tough personality but can also be very sweet and kind outside of work. She brought inspiration to all of us at the workshop; Even though others may put you down, just try your best to reach your goal and prove them wrong.

Student Serivce Fair

I attended student services fair on 10/13/09, at 12:30pm. Many different deparements of School participated in the event. I got some questions about registraration, Starr Career Development, and financial Aid. Since it was extremely crowded there, it took me a lot of time to fight through the crowds and ask my questions. They answered them and they are pretty useful. I also took some information packet from there (I took some gifts from them, the gifts are cool). Well, I also walked around the room and listen to other discussions. I got some more information about Baruch. The best part of it is probably the experience there with other freshmen, it was fun to see everyone tried to get signed without listening to those long, boring speech, such as gym.  Overall, it was pretty good.

Small Talk, Part II

A week ago I took part in a Career Exploration workshop called Small Talk, Part II. This workshop was the second in a series. Although I did not attend the first part, Wendy Heyman, the first presenter, briefly went over its main points, which I found was very useful. We then went into the day’s presentation which went over points such as the importance of knowing a person’s name, the art of schmoozing (making small talk, but in a very smooth manner), why small talk is necessary, and where successful small talk can get you. Although I did not go into this workshop with high expectations, I was actually very impressed with the way the workshop was run. Not only were the presentation topics interesting, but we also did exercises to prove the points that were being made. For example, in one exercise we had around ten minutes to walk around and meet four new people and practice small talk with them. We also got into groups to answer questions relating on how to deal with small talk in certain situations. Thanks to these exercises, the presentation went very fast and I came out of it feeling like I had learned something. I thank the presenters, Wendy Heyman and Aida Martinez, for doing such a good job.

Arts at Baruch

On November 3rd, I attended the Mercedes Matter exhibit at the Mishkin Gallery. The exhibit contained many paintings by the late artist Mercedes Matter, which were sectioned off in different areas, in accordance with the time they were painted. In the first section there were paintings that were painted while Ms. Matter was in her early years. All the paintings were abstract and it just gave the general sense of the form that was portrayed. For example, in one of the paintings a woman was portrayed nude. We could discern that it was a woman from the general shape of her form; there weren’t many details and she was highly abstracted, as she was painted in bright colors, like blue, green and red. As we looked through the rest of the exhibition we saw that Ms. Matter started painting even more abstracted works of art as her life progressed. Her later works of art were so abstracted it was hard to see what was actually being portrayed.

The group at the exhibition was a small group, so it made the presentation easier to hear and understand. The presenter of the exhibition informed us that Ms. Matter was born in 1913 and she passed away in 2001. She also informed us that a knowledge in art could help even business majors. When we start working in big companies, she explained, that we will be put in social situations in which it will be useful to have cultural knowledge. The exhibit was interesting and it gave me the chance to learn about an artist who I had not known about before.

Student Life

During my time here so far, I have learned a little about Student Life at Baruch.  I have learned that there are various organizations such as fraternities and sororities as well as teams and clubs/organizations.  I was able to obtain a list of the clubs from the office of Student Life and I am thinking of visiting the Archery Club if I have time.  I also visited the club fair on September 24 and talked to the representatives of this club who provided me with some information about it and gave me a brochure and a bookmark.  I see that during the club hours on Tuesday and Thursday Baruch students are very busy doing the activities that their club or organization requires or just studying or working out.  I myself have experienced the crowds in the weight room on a Tuesday or Thursday.
