History questions What were the names of Pericles’s teachers? What subjects did they teach him? What effects did the teaching have on his adult life? What were the stages by which Pericles got to the top of the politics? When at the top, what was his recommendation that the city should do and no do with his power? And the notes =/ 10-05-2009 -Athens is broken up into three parts: Plain – led by Lycurgus Shore – led by Megacles Hills (Diacria) – led by Pisistratus -Megacles is the son of Alcmaeon, descended from the Megacles that was in the blood feud vs. Cylon. That make Megacles’s an aristocrat. -The plains and shores are made up of aristocrats. -Peasants don’t want to run or lead because they are scared that they will lose. -After Solon left, Athens started to separate into factions (not what Solon intended). Stage 5: Pisistratus (561/546/528) -Became the tyrant of Athens. -Solon on the other hand is the lawgivers and he doesn’t want any power to himself. -Pisistratus wounded himself and lied to the people that he needs bodyguards. Using the bodyguards, he seized the Acropolis with it. -The plain and shore formed an alliance and resists against Pisistratus. They expelled Pisistratus from the city. -Megacles makes alliance with Pisistratus through marriage. -Pisistratus has married twice and has two adult sons. -Pisistratus is expelled again because of his refusal to have intercourse with Megacles’s daughter. -Having an intercourse gives birth to a child which link the shore and hills together. -Pisistratus hired soldiers to take over Athens and stayed in power till he dies. --Professor Trumbach assumes that the area Pisistratus moved to after he was exiled was filled with silver mines. Pisistratus somehow managed to gain control of silver mine and started producing silver coins so he can hire soldiers to take over Athens. -Pisistratus is able to retain his power this time than the first time because the first time, the bodyguards that took over Athens are paid by the people. The second time is when he married Megacles’s daughter to stay in power. This time he retain his power is that he’s independent and he can afford to pay the hired soldiers to continue controlling Athens. -Pisistratus was thrown out not because he was a tyrant but other people want to be the “chief”. -Pisistratus gives money to people who need money. -He was humane, mild, and forgiving to wrongdoers, and in particular he lent money to those who were in difficulties, to support their work, so they could continue to maintain themselves by farming. (The handout, page 8) -The third time he come back to power, he does not forget the peasants “his old friends” that were behind him. -Pisistratus throws parties for the aristocrats and gives helps to peasants. -Pisistratus was charged with a homicide charge, but the charger got frightened and he ran away. -Pisistratus used the tactics that he was just a normal citizen and he attended the homicide case as a common person and determined to defend himself. The stages of Pisistratus 1) Bodyguard – Took over Athens, got the bodyguard from the peasants (hills) 2) Alliance (Plains & Shore) – Exile Pisistratus 3) Alliance (Between Megacles and Pisistratus through marriage) – reinstalled Pisistratus in power 4) Exile – Pisistratus is exiled again because he refuses to have intercourse with Megacles’s daughter. 5) Mercenaries – Pisistratus hired soldiers and took over Athens and remains in power till he dies. Old ways to get into powers are alliances and soldiers. New way – Pisistratus court peasants into power. -Pisistratus died in bed and was succeeded by his son. -His two sons are called Hippias and Hipparchus. -Hipparchus has a boy lover and the boy lover is called Harmodius. -Hippias has an older lover who is called Aristogiton. -Aristogiton insulted Harmodius that Hippias “When are you going to have my baby?” (Trumbach). Hippias killed Aristogiton.
