History questions

What were the names of Pericles’s teachers? What subjects did they teach him?
What effects did the teaching have on his adult life?
What were the stages by which Pericles got to the top of the politics?
When at the top, what was his recommendation that the city should do and no do
with his power?

And the notes =/

-Athens is broken up into three parts:

Plain – led by Lycurgus

Shore – led by Megacles

Hills (Diacria) – led by Pisistratus

-Megacles is the son of Alcmaeon, descended from the Megacles that was in the blood feud vs. Cylon. That make Megacles’s an aristocrat.

-The plains and shores are made up of aristocrats.

-Peasants don’t want to run or lead because they are scared that they will lose.

-After Solon left, Athens started to separate into factions (not what Solon intended).

Stage 5: Pisistratus (561/546/528)

-Became the tyrant of Athens.
-Solon on the other hand is the lawgivers and he doesn’t want any power to himself.

-Pisistratus wounded himself and lied to the people that he needs bodyguards. Using the bodyguards, he seized the Acropolis with it.

-The plain and shore formed an alliance and resists against Pisistratus. They expelled Pisistratus from the city.

-Megacles makes alliance with Pisistratus through marriage.

-Pisistratus has married twice and has two adult sons.

-Pisistratus is expelled again because of his refusal to have intercourse with Megacles’s daughter.

-Having an intercourse gives birth to a child which link the shore and hills together.

-Pisistratus hired soldiers to take over Athens and stayed in power till he dies.

--Professor Trumbach assumes that the area Pisistratus moved to after he was exiled was filled with silver mines. Pisistratus somehow managed to gain control of silver mine and started producing silver coins so he can hire soldiers to take over Athens.

-Pisistratus is able to retain his power this time than the first time because the first time, the bodyguards that took over Athens are paid by the people. The second time is when he married Megacles’s daughter to stay in power. This time he retain his power is that he’s independent and he can afford to pay the hired soldiers to continue controlling Athens.

-Pisistratus was thrown out not because he was a tyrant but other people want to be the “chief”.

-Pisistratus gives money to people who need money.

-He was humane, mild, and forgiving to wrongdoers, and in particular he lent money to those who were in difficulties, to support their work, so they could continue to maintain themselves by farming. (The handout, page 8)

-The third time he come back to power, he does not forget the peasants “his old friends” that were behind him.

-Pisistratus throws parties for the aristocrats and gives helps to peasants.

-Pisistratus was charged with a homicide charge, but the charger got frightened and he ran away.

-Pisistratus used the tactics that he was just a normal citizen and he attended the homicide case as a common person and determined to defend himself.

The stages of Pisistratus

1)     Bodyguard – Took over Athens, got the bodyguard from the peasants (hills)

2)     Alliance (Plains & Shore) – Exile Pisistratus

3)     Alliance (Between Megacles and Pisistratus through marriage) – reinstalled Pisistratus in power

4)     Exile – Pisistratus is exiled again because he refuses to have intercourse with Megacles’s daughter.

5)     Mercenaries – Pisistratus hired soldiers and took over Athens and remains in power till he dies.

Old ways to get into powers are alliances and soldiers.

New way – Pisistratus court peasants into power.

-Pisistratus died in bed and was succeeded by his son.

-His two sons are called Hippias and Hipparchus.

-Hipparchus has a boy lover and the boy lover is called Harmodius.

-Hippias has an older lover who is called Aristogiton.

-Aristogiton insulted Harmodius that Hippias “When are you going to have my baby?” (Trumbach). Hippias killed Aristogiton.

Date attended: October 6

On this particular day I was not planning on attending any workshops, but my friend Rolra convinced me to go, and to my benefit the workshop was really short so I didn’t mind going. The tour guide showed us several photographs (I was actually surprised because I was expecting to see paintings), among which I only remember two photos distinctly.

One of the photos showed two men on a boat. I remember this particular photo because our tour guide discussed the the aspect of movement that the photographer was trying to portray. The things that showed motion in the photo was one man pouring water out of a bucket, ripples in the water, and the other man standing on one foot trying to maintain his balance because the boat was most likely rocking back and forth. Our tour guide also mentioned that only part of the boat was photographed, and not the whole (which didn’t seem significant to me at first); the photographer’s intention in doing this was to create the effect of bringing viewers inside the photo, to make them feel like they were a part of it. It suddenly occurred to me that a lot of thought goes into creating a masterpiece that clearly depicts the intentions of the photographer (or any artist for the matter), so that it has the effect that he/she is trying to achieve.

The other photo that serves my memory well is one that looked like a landscape. The black-and-white photo was serene, and looked like hills. However, once I got up close, I realized that these hills were actually men laying on their stomachs, stationed side-by-side diagonally, creating the illusion of a landscape. The hills were created by the curves of the men, especially by their butts (sorry if this sounds vulgar). What I thought was nothing more than a boring landscape photo suddenly became interesting to me, and captured my attention. I think the photographer was really clever in creating this photo, deceiving viewers and forcing them to do a double-take and to take a closer look before they judge a work of art to be boring.

It just goes to show that one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, or in this case, a photo at first glance.

Shake Shack & music

I went to Shake Shack to celebrate my friend’s birthday today. I read many good reviews online and so I thought why not give it a try. I ordered a cheeseburger. It was very delicous, …but Im not exactly sure if it was because of the seasoning or if it was because it was so salty. I had a good time, the food was good, the weather was nice (yay for sunshine and spring-ish breeze every so often). The only thing that worried me was that  pigeons/ birds were flying around very close to me and the birds sitting on the tree branch above my head… didn’t want to go back to class with a “splash” of  highlighted hair hahas ;]

I heard that there is a piano room at Baruch, does anyone know where that is? I want to “jam” (lols). I tried to play the piano that is in the japanese classroom, but  it needs to be tuned and some of the keys don’t work . Does anyone listen to Love Story meets Viva la Vida, arrangement for piano and cello ? This song makes my day 🙂

I shall study for my math test tomorrow now. peace.

What does it mean…

to “flag” a post on Blackboard?

I just posted my weekly response for Soc1005, but my post was in huge monsterous font and I want to delete it because its too big (and hurts my eyes><).. but there is no delete button. So then I decided to post it again and make the font smaller, but now its too small (sighh). And now there are 2 posts of the same thing, but different sized fonts.

So I’m wondering what “Flag” button is for… like if someone flags it, will it not appear?

Baruch Wireless

So is the wirelss in baruch really bad? It took my about 5 minutes to load up gmail. And after that, I was unable to load up any mail. So it wa completely useless.

Regarding food, today I had some cafeteria food. It was pretty good and cheap except they drenched the rice in some sauce which ended up burning my tongue with all the flavor.

Freshman Reception

Well, I was with Michelle on the day of the Academic Enrichment workshop and we basically saw a crowd of people gathering around to get their planners signed. After that, I saw a few of my friends coming out of the room so I asked them whether there was anything else to the workshop. They were already in the process of leaving though, so I told them to stay there while I go in to check it out myself hahah. But yea, there really wasn’t much to it I guess. It’s like what everyone else said – they didn’t expect that many people to show up.

club fair

Since there’s supposed to over 170 clubs at Baruch, I think I expected more out of the club fair. But it wasn’t that bad, considering there was free food and drinks, and I enjoyed the dancing circle at the back the gym. I did like TEAS, maybe because they were all wearing pink (lol), but they were also very welcoming. I’m also interested in the SACC development center, (I think that’s what it’s called), and in the future I’d hope that they can help me land an internship or a job.

After being at the club fair, I feel like I want to be more active, or involved in the school’s community. I know a lot of people who just go to Baruch for classes and then go straight home, but I want to actually be involved inside the school. So I guess that’s what I got out of the club fair – a sense of community and a desire to be a part of it.
